I thought it's about relationships, but it was still very meaningful. Friction or drag are responsible for so much of the burned fuels... This is a field I'd love venture capitalists to invest in instead of stupid games etc. The designs of airplanes and ships are so old-school and these 2 industries pollute the most CO2.
The only time I think about the co-efficient of friction is when I get the urge to accelerate in my Mustang while it's raining. My best regards to Mr. Yonko (AP Physics Teacher), Newark High School, DE, 2005.
Didn't we cover this in high school? If not in science it was in "Health Class" when boys and girls were separated to different rooms to watch those black and white films about … you know.
Friction is when you're with someone really amazing and you and him/her have good chemistry and he/she expects you to be "friends" with his/her long list of exes because he/she still is
Wow. I never thought this morning that I'd wake up and listen to someone talking about friction and brushing cats teeth. I bet this woman is a hilarious at dinner parties! Well at least her kids will have plenty of stories to encourage them to sleep because I'm pretty much there now already.
This is actually a very simple concept, and can be understood by common sense. And the examples she was explained was like the examples given to kids in school, very very basic. Whereas honestly since this is Ted Talk, I expected more complex example about friction, like the use of superconductor, etc.
I was with you until you talked about the examples. You can create you own examples based on the simple concept. Kids in school are actually using these videos as well, so calm down. It doesn't need to be in Greek just because it's a Ted Talk
...the last time I heard that word was in College... lol Tribology, I've forgotten the term... you seem to be having fun talking about it...tuff subject matter to sale...
About solutions on reducing shoes and clothes wearing, don’t expect too much. You got an enemy called “ fashion industry” who will offset all your effort on it. It is not something that can be fixed by science.
Hmmm.... all these tribological questions immediately come to mind. Such as, why do certain people rub me they way they do? Or how to be a smooth as possible when talking to a girl? Among other things... Seriously, though... good talk!
Yeah i've seen people light matchsticks on their fly (buuut you might want to avoid making that comparison). Btw, you can buy fire retardant pillows ya know... ;)
I was in industrial sales in the 1990s and called on a Diesel engine manufacturer in Indiana one of the manufacturing managers gathered up all the critical parts to make a engine run the only requirement was these parts had to have a tolerance of 0 usually there is a tolerance of plus or minus of several thousands of an inch he wanted perfect parts with a zero tolerance it took him quite some time to assembly these parts when he did he got the engine assembled and tried to get it to run it would not run, it needed the slop to run
Isn’t this a Ted talk? Aren’t those adults in the audience? Why is the talk pitched at a twelve year old's comprehension level? Why, why would she ask why we would want to become a tribologist before having told us even one interesting thing about her field? I thought I was going to hear about superconductors at a minimum, not see a picture of her in a tutu. Perhaps there’s something at the RA, or PBS.
It is a simple concept. The application in products isn't. Reducing friction has massive implications in energy savings. I think she is simply trying to bring awareness/interest. One of the few Ted talks without political overtones.
@@tom1b1b8 yeah, friction is a part of engineering. It doesn't need a weird name and it's not needed for people shifting their bums in seats. *true, no political overtones does make it acceptable
Tribology is one of the most complex fields of engineering, with some effects not even explained yet by science for 100 years. There are few dozen conferences and about thousends papers published each year in the field. However her talk is soso, not very inspiring.
Finally, a real TED talk for once in a while!
zeramino didn’t you wanted gender politics from trans people? Hahaha neither did I
Wonderful examples, my nine year old son and I loved them!
*_Thanks for having english subtitles or captions_*
@Res Nullius she's just talking in global language English..
Everybody gangsta till the friction starts frictioning
TED talk videos nowadays generate much tribulation in the comment section but today the topic was straight up tribology.
Steven_Duller Maybe but damn, this is more common sense than anything else.
I love reading science friction.
Can we lubricate people to alleviate friction between them as well? That would be great
Now you know why alcohol is called a (the?) social lubricant.
Especially when the ladies are "tribbing".

This talk rubbed me up the wrong way for some reason
Would roller skating be considered an example of tribology?
I would assume so, since there is still rolling resistance on the wheels (friction)
Anyone else read the title as "the science of fiction" the video caught me off guard
amazing content
lovely stuff
Idk I have had amazing shower thoughts but never thought that
Without friction we cannot musterbate
Friction is your friend. When it is not your friend, it is an enemy, to be feared.
Thank you 😊❤️

Oh so thats why tribbing is called that
Yes
Yep... through trials and tribulations;)
i would like to see some movies out of the "Science Friction" Genre.
Futurama was about Sci-Fri

Great video 👍🏻
Thanks for the class of friction...........😁😁🤣🤣

TED? Every one can talk TED?

I like my tires extra sticky, unfortunately they wear out faster. But it makes for a fun and safer ride.
I knew that word from self research 😏
GREAT
Friction is bad, keep lubricant on your nightstand so you don’t get excessive parts wear! 🤣

interesting, but she could use more images
Friction can be dangerous! I've started more fires from dry-humping....

Her words slipping like them no Fri surfaces too.
This is “science friction”... and how does she use tribology in her personal life🤔
do not brush your teeth with diamonds guys
It's a little late for that
Hunh. I would've thunk that Tribology had something to do with explaining white kids rockin' dreads.

Is tribology making her talk like William Shatner?
cockroachafro Shadoobie... Shatner, Shatner... does it matter?
Dont you talk about tribology all the time miss
Thorium
There is to much political friction there.
I am not brushing an animals teeth.
Tibology studies ? Put some bacon on it !
Sounds like f(r)iction to me
So it's a rub job
I’m just here looking for sexually-related comments.

Had felt a lot of friction trying to watch across this video till its end.
The worst presentation I watched ever on TED. It was a waste of time.
i only watched because my gf wanted to finish it. after 5 minutes all we heard was wat friction is and i couldn't bear it any longer
This is boring. 5 mins in and I don't see her getting to a main point.
