The button at the very bottom of the overcoat was to keep the skirt flaps closed while walking or in high wind. Yours seems to be modifed and cut shorter for more mobility. I find the flap button to be very useful on windy winter day. Great video! 👍
I used to wear a Civil Defence greatcoat in England when I was 17 or 18. They were almost fashionable back then. In a counter cultural kind of way. Peacoats are brilliant. I'd buy one if I lived in a cold country, but two/three months in southwest Portugal and nine/ten months in northern Thailand suggests I don't need one. Nick
Great video. It really shows when you wear it that it's too small for you since it has that modern half thigh look. The US one really shows the precticality with the pockets that you can reach through and the buttons front and back that you can button the hole thing with when standing on cold guard duty. Not as stylish as the UK 1939 pattern though IMO.
Thanks. Yes it is smaller than I probably should have had at the time, especially since I should be wearing a lot more underneath it. I like when military clothing was still stylish.
I just got one of these at a gun show for $25. I'm a more muscular guy, and the one I got is a little snug around the chest/shoulders and the sleeves come up a tad bit shorter than I'd like, but I think it'll be a great winter coat for camping.
@@derekdoeschannel I was thinking of something similar. I might try to bring it to other shows and trade it up for a bigger size as well. Thanks for the advice!
First of all, Your channel is great. I enjoy seeing your videos on this niche and a lot of good information. You seem to be a very knowledgeable person when it comes to these things. Do you have any information regarding US Vietnam and Korea era overcoats in OG-107? They are trenchcoats more specifically, it seems to be very difficult to find anything about them. Thanks.
love your videos, I have been looking at getting a ww2 1940 pattern british patterngreat coat due to my great grandfather having worn one while in normandy and at night in north africa
Still trying to get over my wool allergy. Wool is the best warmth fill you can get. Makes me itchy. I bought a Cowichan sweater recently on eBay, and although I've washed it as much as I can, by hand and hung to dry, I will still itch from it.
@@derekdoeschannel I like Merino wool actually. Alpaca can feel really scratchy if in a BR. I have an old Buzz B-15 with alpaca. Strangely I have an original N-1 with soft alpaca. Probably BR didn't quite make the grade for the real thing. Mostly BR is very very close though.
I have my grandfather's coat just like this one. It has been hanging for decades and is in good shape. I wanted to ask how best to clean it if I don't want to take it to a dry cleaners?
maybe look for an organic dry cleaner. They use less harsh chemicals. Is the coat dirty? if not, I'd just let it hang out in the sunshine for a bit. Sunshine does wonders on old jackets.

Thanks Someone else mentioned that also. Obviously a war time mod.
@@derekdoeschannel It was not a mod but a design I think
Got a few Soviet ones from the 80s. Really high quality stuff.
They know how to make them. I had a 80s French army one a while ago and it was nice too.
just found your channel i hope you keep doing these videos even tho you don't get enough recognition!
Thank you!
I love greatcoats. I have a few of them from WW2
They are great!

Yes, probably not the best pick up if you can only wear it maybe a few times a year.

Great pick up. If you want you could look for a bigger size and sell the one you picked up and it might pay for the bigger one.

The back belt did sort of help align your issued belt and is said to keep everything stable.
Thanks! Great info.

Hi and thank you! I don’t know that much about them, although I’ve seen them quite a few times at the thrift store. I just never had needed one.

Thanks! You totally should get one. I don't really see them around here in the US, but I bet if in the UK you can find them easier!

Try Alpaca or Cashmere.

I’m guessing BR was a mix.
@@derekdoeschannel BR was alpaca I think as much as alpaca can be alpaca.

Looking for one in my size 44L I have a Greek great coat haven’t had a winter in it yet
Remember they run big
@@derekdoeschannel true but I am 6,7 230 I need a big coat lol
Are there different variants of the trench coat?
I’m sure there are, but I don’t know each one. Most military jackets/coats changed over time and needs.
It seems like that the coat was actually shortened, mine is about middle of my shins
I don’t think it was. I do have long legs and it’s a smaller size.

Maybe it was.
Mine does not have tag is gone how do date it
It's tough to do without the tag.
I have a Canadian Navy wool overcoat. That I was issued. Cant wear it.
Just display it?
@@derekdoeschannel No I think I'll just keep it til the end of time.
In the closet collecting dust.. because nobody really wants to wear it.
👌🏼👊🏼
thanks
bro i got the same one
Awesome!
I can see someone jumping out of a trench with an M-1 rifle with that coat on. Other than that , no. Wearing it on the eastern front.
It is bulky.
