Had it been an ISI helmet I'm sure I would have had serious injuries. I have both ECE and ISI certified helmets and the strength and quality is just world's apart.

  • @hardiblueman

    The problem with this law is that since BIS standards do seem lower than ECE, even though it is derived from it, that would mean that international makers can reduce their quality to create helmets specific to India so that they just clear Indian standards. Which in effect means cheaper but relatively unsafe helmets compared to the ones sold internationally by these manufacturers. I have a big problem with that as I feel if one manufacturer does it, others will follow suit. Conversely this could also result in more SMK like helmets built with Indian partnership.

    • @horror478
      @horror478 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I doubt any international manufacturer would build a lower quality helmet, and risk tarnishing it's global image... What I do see is international brands just saying 'bye bye' and leaving the Indian market, as have many other international businesses done because of obstacles to functioning here.

    • @hardiblueman
      @hardiblueman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@horror478 Agree. But I feel they can get around the tarnishing of image question by branding it as something else entirely. Something along the lines of Bybre by Brembo. Not saying Bybre are bad just that I would prefer Brembo.

    • @rithvikkrs
      @rithvikkrs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But you guys are missing the point here... For eg someone in India is buying an AGV in India he is doing because of the quality and if they have lowered it's quality why would you go for it. So an AGV will never reduce its quality and in India the investment in big bikes is increasing and everyone one related to this will definitely want to enter based on the market we have and manufactures neglecting India in anything will pay the price. So don't worry

    • @Nooboroshi

      PD will need specialized testing equipment to make such a video and the sheer amount of helmets available in every price bracket makes this nigh impossible. Firstly there are different helmet formats like full, half, foldable, and more, and even there there exists sub categories like sport, moto, etc. Secondly, helmets are different for men and women. So the selection is really very wide. The best thing to do is research on what you want in your helmet, shortlist the ones you like and then watch/read reviews if possible and then buy. Atleast that's what I do.

    Missed out couple of impediments for importers/manufacturers. Having a local test lab setup isn't sufficient.
    BIS officials mandatorily visit the manufacturing plant outside India to assess quality standards.
    1. With Covid-19 restrictions, no visits have been feasible for over a year and not expected anytime soon either with hundreds/thousands of visits pending not just for helmets but other products too.
    2. Premium helmet manufacturers push the cost of certification, visit and associated expensive Performance Bank Guarantee to their importers and total costs may be too high for a importer with low volumes to offset.

    Making the end product expensive or not, riders who pitch in for safety will still buy them.
    The only problem I see is, will the manufacturers go the extent in spending a lot of money to get a local government certificate to cater a market where their sales isn’t promising. Most customer base here in our country is from a rider who is aware of what he wants over his head and knows the value of his head. Not sure even if that’s 1% of the total helmet users in the country.
    Firstly, most manufacturers haven’t entered the market themselves, it’s usually the seller who imports and sells it to in places where there is demand for such helmets. Not sure if and when these manufacturers will go the extent to spend a lot on a market with annual sales figures of less than 100 units?

    I remember reading in news when the isi standard will be replaced by BIS and the maximum weight being 1200gms, they will still allow higher standards. Looks like now the police will give a challan if it's not BIS certified anyway. Hope they don't forcefully start destroying the helmets like what they did with aftermarket exhausts. And I don't think any global big brands will invest in India to get the helmets certified here. Because people who go for the higher standards will still be much lower compared to total people who rides a motorcycle. We must wait and see what happens.
