I am 22 years old and will be going into my senior year of college. My major is elementary education K-6. I was starting to get depressed and think .. so I really want to work for some else do I really want to teach for little money and high stresses? But then I thought what if I can open a daycare ( something I’ve always thought about though just never put action) but I am wondering if my elementary education degree could be enough to be the director of my own daycare?
Hi Ashunti! I am also a college senior, in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education, so I will be Birth-5th. Through my classes, I have noticed my Elementary classes tend to focus on 3-6, so without my Early Childhood courses, I have gained more confidence in my ability to go into different child care centers (Head Start classes, GSRP, Montessori, etc.). In my Early Childhood courses I have learned a lot about infants and toddlers, which could be super beneficial in starting up your own daycare because many parents with preschoolers might be planning on having another child and would like to send their infant to the same daycare as their preschooler. Babysitting an infant (or having your own) is different than following curriculum and standards for infants. I honestly don't know if just the elementary degree would be enough, but I think it would be most beneficial for you to gain knowledge in Early Childhood. Typically, if you were to become a preschool teachers in a child care center, you would need to get your CDA (Child Development Associate) Credentials. So if you did not want to get your masters in Early Childhood, you could definitely find out more information on the CDA Credentials.
I'm purchasing a commercial space. Does it have to have a designated outdoor space for a daycare? Its a condo style & I'm not sure yet if they will allow a fence in the business park
You would have to check the regulations in your state or local area. In New York, we are required to have a space for outdoor play. It doesn't necessarily mean it has to be attached to the property, it could be a public park, but we have to show that the children do have a safe space for outdoor play and the method for getting there each day. In Philly, however, as long as there is a separate gross motor play space inside at least, I don't believe outdoor space is required. If you need help researching this info and have other start up questions, I'd love to get you booked for a consultation! Shoot me an email at info@danichristine.com
You don't need a degree to OPEN any business. If there are certain education and experience requirements that come along with a certain industry, position, or license, as the business owner you can always hire someone else with the required credentials to fill the role. If you want to be the director, provider, or whatever your state might call the lead role of the day care program, there is most likely going to be some minimum qualification standards. You have to check your local day care regulations to find this information out. If you need assistance, I'd love to get you booked for a consultation! Send me an email at info@danichristine.com
What about a special need childcare center? Are there other special requirements? I'm a RN and want to open a medical special needs center. Where I would provide medication, tube feeding, oxygen if needed.
Goodness she’s beautiful....
