    What magnificent work! You really do justice to Allan's genius. There's technique and runs, but also a fantastic melody line. I must have listened to this track a thousand times already (not here, on the record...) and I can't get enough of it. Thanks for showing us how it works!

    Fantastic job, bravo. Imagine Allan playing this solo on a jam, then looking at you and saying : Ok, your turn... Modulations are amazing, playing this particular solo is insane, and trying to improvise freely on this tune is... Nuts. That's one reason why we love him so much. Delicate attention.

    • @nicklinnik
      @nicklinnik  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it’s definitely one of my top 5 studio solos. It’s completely bizarre and yet makes sense. It doesn’t really contain any of his usual language either which makes it even more enticing.

    • @nicolasespinasse
      @nicolasespinasse 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicklinnik Yes, some people argue he never really played these synthaxe solos live (which is not true: Spokes live version exists (I saved the MP3), even if the solo is totally different, but still beautiful lines). Don't wanna bother, but I would be honored if you considered joining the Spokes "challenge" on my anecdotic channel. I made a downloadable backing-track, wrote a simple pdf with chords, modes/keys to use as a guide-line. Only 2 entries yet, and I'm sure you'd be amazing on this other top 5 favorite. Do you have a pdf for Secrets solo, or is it decyphering/learning in real time? Best regards.

    • @nicklinnik
      @nicklinnik  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was working from a transcription found on the Unreal Allan Holdsworth FB group, there is a ‘files’ tab that you can access via desktop. I’ll try to have a go at Spokes, there is actually an absolutely faultless transcription of the solo by Ben Vize that I’m thinking about attempting... That harmonica guy on Spokes is absolutely nuts!

      @nicolasespinasse 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'd imagine you've got a lot of potential wisdom to share on the topic.

    • @nicklinnik
      @nicklinnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lex.cordis Well, it really depends on what you're working towards. I mostly just keep going over the fundamental stuff; chords, scales, arpeggios/triads and continuously working on visualising the fretboard and trying to remove any proverbial 'doubt' (when improvising). If I'm having trouble 'seeing' a key I will devote more time to it on that day/week etc. I try to work on something new every day but always thinking about how it relates to what I already know.

    Beyond my understanding how someone could determine accurately the correct notes to play. I can hear it but the faster sections have always been beyond the sampling rate of my cognitive processing device. Part of why I’ve always loved it is the fact that I can’t comprehend it. It becomes in sections music I can’t analyze. To have figured it out AND demonstrate it is to me supernatural

      its a lot easier now, you have software and other tools that can help, but back in the day, used to have a half speed cassette player, which would be on a repeat to try and pick up notes. there is another channel, a guitarist is looking at the 90s tab books and how bad they were lol. so i was lucky to have the tape player being able to half speed play tracks, since the tabs were not great. not that a half speed tape player would help with holdsworth lol. maybe 1/1000th speed

    Hey man, can I ask you for some advice on tone? I have a Kiesel HH2 that I am running into a Dual Rectifier, with a Line 6 HX Stomp in the FX loop. I just cannot get a good sounding tone. Just sounds muddy and dead no matter what I do. Honestly, I've never been very good with electronics. I know "good tone" is highly subjective, but I would just imagine that with this gear, I should be able to come up with something that sounds relatively pleasing. Any advice?

    • @nicklinnik
      @nicklinnik  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I had a Mesa! Good stuff, doesn’t get much better than that. Take the HX out of the equation for now and just focus on the amp and guitar.
      I don’t know your specific “Mk” of Dual Rectifier but there should be a vintage mode, no? That would be the most ‘even’ of the modes. Where are you using the amp? These things really need to be worked for them to sound right. Low volumes won’t really have the right mojo unless you have an attenuator.
      Does it sound dead like it’s just lifeless or does it sound dead like there is something wrong with the signal? I know vaguely that Dual Rectifiers have a giant amount of bass so you may need to set it comically low for it to be usable. It also responds very quickly and is rather unforgiving to play, particularly on the modern mode. That can contribute to that ‘dead’ feeling. As far as the amount of distortion goes, try and have just enough for it to get interesting but no more than that.
      Ask someone whose opinion you trust to have a look at it with you or take it to a reputable tech. Maybe you just simply don’t like it as much as you thought you did?
      Sorry if some of these are obvious but hopefully some are helpful.

    • @lex.cordis
      @lex.cordis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicklinnik Ah, man. This is really reassuring. Okay, I'll take the HX out for now. I do indeed have vintage mode. Been mostly using modern mode since I've had it. It sounds lifeless, but not like something wrong with the signal. It definitely is really bass-heavy! You're right that it may also just not be for me, but I'm not calling it quits just yet. I only purchased it since my previous employer offered it to me for $1000 flat, including a cabinet. The cabinet is a Peavey 5150 4x12 cab, if that matters.
