Special thanks goes to my friend Brett Stine for his transcription. If you would like the transcription email Brett brettstinemusic@yahoo.com Here's the video of Brett • Allan Holdsworth "The ...
The phrasing in this solo is so memorable, it's the timing how he locked in the runs in with the drums strong down beats on the 1 and 3. Anyone else besides me crank this tune car stereo to the max while everyone else around you on the highway looks at you puzzled? "What on earth is he listening to?" :)
1 and 3 like mick goodrick talks about on the berkley website about how he teaches he students making sure they play on the 1 and 3 while using the metronome..
Allan was the most remarkable virtuoso improvisor known to mankind. You picked one of the most difficult solos & played faultlessly. Nothing more need be said. I first saw allan with Nucleus in 1979. Then 5 times after. So glad I did
Ha ha ha you absolutely nailed it - perfect tone, fingerings and all! The next step (of course you know this and I know this) would be to perform this solo live at Sea World while simultaneously fighting sharks with your feet. You can do it man!
This is one of my favourite Holdsworth solos. You play it with surgical precision. Fantastic. That diminished scale string skipping with the slide is amazing.
I’ve seen quite a few attempts at Allan… Derryl understood the intention like no one else.. Absolutely beautiful!!! 🥰 🥰 Amazingly well played, ma dude!! 😍😍😍
The fact that you have the ability and capacity to interpret Alan's vocabulary so closely is mind-blowing. Stunning execution, Derryl! I am looking forward to where your ability will take you next. Thanks for posting... truly inspiring!
Awesome version Derryl. Another mountain climbed, a superb achievement by any standards. It so great to see pieces like this being performed cos it gives us mortals a sense of hope and source for learning!
I had to play this a gazzillion times before I could play it up to speed. I started on it when Allan died. I think Brett said he played it off and on for like a year before he filmed it. I basically have just played this and House of Mirrors since Allan died. I'll be filming H.O.M. soon.
I cant believe someone actually managed to cover this so clean. Amazing! Only the Riff from 1:24 - 1:26 alone must have taken hours of practice. Thank you so much man! Its one of my favourite Allan tunes.
Excellent performance of this fantastic abstract Holdsworth composition. imho 'Drums were Yellow' is one of the best guitar & drums duo combination ever - sits alongside Methany & Sanchez's live version of 'Got Get It'. Just guitar and drums is hard to pull off but can be so rewarding when it works.
Sweet solo recreation, Derryl! You've done so much research over the years on the analysis of both the man's playing and on articulating what others have not been able to gear wise... Thanks so much for your generosity in sharing the details. All the best, Daniel
p.s. That we are now able to do things like this is so awesome... "I used audio from a video on youtube of Allan demoing the rocket pedal to capture the the Tone Match block."
Thanks Rune! Now, back to improvising and writing for a while. I think my next cover will be a Scott Henderson solo from his Tribal Tech days. Hope you're well.
Biiiiiiitchen!!! thanks great job ( looks painful ,but also kool) Hope you are well . I'm still working on the dim. Fusion and wide interval dim.licks you shared(helped get a better view of the dim. Shapes) thanks so much.🎄🎸🔊🎶😎😂🎄 🦍🎄 🐵🎄 God loves you deeply shalom🎄🎄🎄✨🎉😀
+Derryl Gabel, Could someone with shorter fingers use a short scale for playing his songs like this one? My first finger is only three inches long to give you an idea of hand size.
S U P E R B !!! In the course if you learning A.H. solos, I'm wondering if you've noticed signature 'licks/runs'? If so, could you share.........PLEASE :-) Keep up the good work. You're very inspiring.
Epic playing as always! Request for "in the mystery" solo with tabs, short one but so cool. Is the ax8 have enough guts to emulate a ud stomp or only the ax fx 2 would do the job?
Awesome Derryl!! Would you say this is over a static implied drone? Haven't sat down to figure it out but what would you say Allan was thinking in terms of tonality?
I can identify several concepts going on through out the solo like side stepping, tritone substitution, cyclical movement, and things like approach notes, encloser, etc... I find that you can take several of the lines and use them in different contexts. For me, I took the solo apart and found where I could play each line over a ii chord or a V chord. As far as what chords he's thinking I suppose only he would know and the rest of us would have to take an educated guess. For example, he starts out with an E minor pentatonic and uses some side stepping, then goes into a Db7th. So is he thinking Emp over a G7 and then using Db7th as a tritone sub? Who knows?
Does anyone know if one could come close to Allan's sound with the holdsworth J Rockett pedal paired with his magic stomp solo settings? I have the magic stomp, always thought it would be great to get the J Rockett pedal.
My friend Brett Stine might be doing that. I think Angelo Comincini filmed himself playing that solo. If you've never seen him, check him out. He nails it.
I think it was one of the best guitar pieces in The Sixteen Men of Tain, but the drums are kind of a turn off. Great technique and tone by the way. Like listening to Holdsworth himself...
Amazing! Killed it!!
Rick Beato hey Rick maybe you should get Derryl on sounding off? : ) that would be a lot of fun to hear you guys talk about harmony and playing
Rick Beato What is the chord at 2:39? so beautiful
thanks Rick! Now, if you could teach me to improvise like Aydin... : )
Bless you for noticing R.B! 😍🥰😍
1st alan solo i heard
Loved them yellow drums too
Tony and alan...what a planet !!!!

Fantastic Derryl!!! I can't imagine how much work you put into this!!! Allan would be proud!!!
Thanks Bruno! Yes, I put in a ton of work. I probably played this solo at least 300 times over the past month and a half!
The fact that you have the ability and capacity to interpret Alan's vocabulary so closely is mind-blowing. Stunning execution, Derryl! I am looking forward to where your ability will take you next. Thanks for posting... truly inspiring!
fantastic playing..so clean and fast..that run at about 1.28 is a killer. Thanks for keeping Holdsworth's legacy alive with your skills

Thank you! Cheers!
positively floored from this electric performance, DG.
Wow! Wow, wow, wow!!! It is so helpful to be able to see what he is doing . Thank you, Prometheus, for showing us how to make such beautiful fire!

Thanks Rune! Now, back to improvising and writing for a while. I think my next cover will be a Scott Henderson solo from his Tribal Tech days. Hope you're well.
Outstanding, Derryl. Bravo!

Laurie Monk Now that would be something to see. Ha!
I tend put my guitar down when Brett picks his up : )
Derryl Gabel haha yeah right...it's the other way around.
+Derryl Gabel,
Could someone with shorter fingers use a short scale for playing his songs like this one? My first finger is only three inches long to give you an idea of hand size.
nice work Derryl!
Derryl, can you explain, in detail, the zig zag (roll and shift) concept ? Like the sound of it at 100 mph.....😁😎🎶🎵🎸
Perfect!
amazing
Incrível 🙌🏿
Shit man, that's a huge accomplishment.
Yeah man! Go get that shit, brotha!!
Thanks for the encouragement my brother. I miss our hang in New York.
very good
I can't understand how Allan, with all the chromatisism, managed to always keep track and land on strong notes to finish a phrase or line. Well played
Inspiring! Wants to make me practice more until tendonitis sets in.
😂😂😂😂
S U P E R B !!! In the course if you learning A.H. solos, I'm wondering if you've noticed signature 'licks/runs'? If so, could you share.........PLEASE :-) Keep up the good work. You're very inspiring.
Let's do a lesson on skype. Hit me up.
Derryl Gabel That would be Cool. I think I own all of your DVDs and have the longest customer review on your website. 👌👍
Great job Derryl
Dammnnnn☺️☺️
practice makes perfect.
Get it
Epic playing as always! Request for "in the mystery" solo with tabs, short one but so cool.
Is the ax8 have enough guts to emulate a ud stomp or only the ax fx 2 would do the job?
I don't think so. To get this sound you need 8 delays and a detune so I don't think the Axe8 has enough horsepower. I'm using the Axe 2 XL Plus.
Derryl Gabel Thanks Derryl, so i will pass on the ax8, sick that older unit like rocktron intelliflex or pcm 81 can nail that but not new stuff.
Awesome Derryl!! Would you say this is over a static implied drone? Haven't sat down to figure it out but what would you say Allan was thinking in terms of tonality?

Is this song about Bill Bruford's yellow drum kit?
Tony Williams
Derryl. What do you prefer ?? 3 notes per string or 4 notes per string playing ??
I like it all.
@@derrylgabel id like to know more about the zig zag rolls exercise. The fingering tablature to see it in more detail.
That's covered here store.derrylgabel.net/product/fretboard-intensive-training-download-version-2/
Does anyone know if one could come close to Allan's sound with the holdsworth J Rockett pedal paired with his magic stomp solo settings? I have the magic stomp, always thought it would be great to get the J Rockett pedal.
Save up for an Axe FX XL Plus. You'll be glad you did.
Derryl, thoughts on the Vader vs HH2? Cheers
I prefer the Vader because I it's more ergonomic. I like the contour for the forearm.
HH2 just over a grand at the moment- great deal. I'm tempted... Cheers!
Allan really seemed to dig the Vader as well. According to Jeff Kiesel he requested they build him an 8 string Vader shortly before he passed.
You probably don't do requests - but please do 'Low Levels High Stakes' solo! :)
My friend Brett Stine might be doing that. I think Angelo Comincini filmed himself playing that solo. If you've never seen him, check him out. He nails it.
Jawdropping
May I ask where from you got the drum track?
I'm playing along to the actual recording not a backing track.
Now spice it up with a little bit of Frank Zappa to take it to the next level emotionally if not technically.
I think it was one of the best guitar pieces in The Sixteen Men of Tain, but the drums are kind of a turn off. Great technique and tone by the way. Like listening to Holdsworth himself...
Why were the drums a turn off?
Doesn't look hard at all * sweats blood *
