sometimes it takes country folk to show us the simple, no-nonsense way of doing things....easy, straight forward, and reusable each and every year with your T-posts... Fantastic...Steve
Hi mr bayou gardener, I am Ed, 24. Thank you so much for all these helpful video im now a great fan of yours. I live in the philippines and im going to save up to build up a farm like yours. country living is still the best in my opinion.
I learned a lesson this year with my first ever garden... 60x30... I did not put my rows far enough apart and WOW is it IMPOSSIBLE to get between the rows now. Corn, Pole Beans, Water Melon, Cantelope, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Okra and more... Wanted to try a variety first time around to see what we want to plant come August planting time... I am still up in the air, but love your videos.. Thank you for the help.
Great videos Don. Been a few years since my last garden. Your videos have inspired me to get back out in the garden, thanks and give Lucy a carrot for me.
Brings back good old memories of my grandma and I , she would grow her own herbs out in the back yard , ask me to get a bunch and wash them throw them in the pot of beans !!! That was awesome !! The smell was wonderful and the beans were so tasty. Thank You Donald. ; )
Thanks Donald. I gota say, I think your videos are the greatest. You got me to started and I now have two 600 sq/ft gardens here in southwest Florida and 25 cu/yds (17 tons) of compost delivered due to the sandy soil. I really like gardening, and it looks like we might be headed to the next great depression. Again... Much thanks!
Another informative video. I never thought of leaving the netting a little above the ground. Great idea. Thanks Donald. Hope you have a great growing season.
Donald, thank you so much for putting this video on. I watched it early in the Spring, messaged you as to where to get the twine and spacing on the t posts. You kindly responded. I purchased the T posts and the twine, tilled up my two rows of about 115', planted and when the plants grew enough I put in the posts and netting. The beans are growing, climbing and the job of pole beans has never been easier. I have an electric fence for deer, now if I can find a way to stop the rabbits. Harold
I have tried this method with my pole beans this year, really like the way it looks. Thanks for all your garden suggestions, they have really helped me alots. Thanks.
Awesome video. I just found out that I was sold some blue lake POLE green beans instead of the bush, now I gotta rush to do something to save the small crop, you video is the answer!
I love the way u do things, Donald...u find the most efficient way to get something done with the least expenditure of energy, lol...my kinda gardening! =) Great video, keep 'em coming!....Angie from Arkansas
Thank you for this demonstration. This will be my first time netting my pole beans and I know I'm going to do it properly because of your video. Thank you!
I sincerely doubt that the Garden of Eden was better groomed, managed, or as good looking as your spread. I look forward to watching the summer progress in LA! And thanks again for sharing with us.
Hello from Texas, Thanks for making and posting this video. I found it very informative. It ( as well as some of your other videos) has given me some things to consider for bettering my garden. Thank you !
Awesome. I just built a couple of these this week for peas and beans. They worked great. I think Memphis net and twine should hire you as a salesperson. I ordered their stuff too and it worked great. Thanks for the great videos.
I did this with my pole beans this year, and so far they're doing great with it. It's much easier to work with than string (like I was doing before). Thanks for the information. Love your videos. :D
That looks better than what one neighbor have setup in his garden and not that complicated either. Thanks for sharing this information and I hope you get a large crop at the end of the season.
Speaking of laws, I just heard there's a new law as of 4th of July (today) that nobody can go to the LA beach to report on the oil spill - or they get thrown in jail. Thank you so much for posting this! Loved it!
Great video! Just bought netting and Louisiana Purple Pole Beans -- the plan is to attach the net to the eaves over the porch and grow beans up it to provide a lot of shade for the windows/house here in Georgia. Sure hope it works. :)
Donald, another great video! I am traveling now, but when I get home in a couple of weeks one of my first tasks is to hang netting for my cucumbers and pole beans (blue lake, by the way). I have always staked the netting to the ground but gee, after watching this, I think I will leave about a foot at the bottom of mine too! Great suggestion! - Mark
Hi...... I enjoyed watching this. Strangely, I have never grown beans in Australia, where I grew up, however I was fascinated with your video, and I did learn some new information. Not sure that I will ever use it, but interesting nonetheless. I wish you only good cropping ! Ian, from Fukushima City, Japan.
@crewlla ... the crop netting works for 5 ft. or 5000 ft. of beans. Real handy stuff and easy to work with. If you take the time to remove the vines, you can reuse it the next season........ Donald
Donald, thank you for info. such valuable info.! We will be planting blue lake when we have our garden! My sons are clearing timber off of land now and we plan to have a nice garden maybe next year.( Have found copperheads this early in Ga). I've learned so much from the videos!
Love this video! I hope to give it a try this year with Kentucky Pole beans, but not so sure it will be a good year for gardening since we are getting MORE than our share of rain (Portland, Oregon). 1 day of weak sunshine every 7 to 10 days just doesn't cut it. Our temps are 10 to 12 F lower than average too! Only thing growing here right now is lots of moss and happy slugs! If you have any spare sunshine send it our way please! Keep up the awesome work Donald!
Thanks for the info Donald. Rabbits ate most of my pole beans last year when they got to be around 2-3 inches in height, annoying, had to replant quickly. I'll also till my plants in at the end of the season too, thanks. Good luck this years.... =)
Let me tell you about growing watermelons on a trelis. I grew my watermelons on what we call Bull Panels. Trained the vines to climb it. Kept them from running everywhere. When the melons got good size, about the size of two closed fist, I put them in commericial onion sacks. It worked for the small ice box size melons up to 30 pounds.
I planted (2) 80 ft. rows of Red Kidney Beans yesterday (lots of rain coming for South LA), along with (2) 80 ft. rows of Pinto beans.... I made my furrows, put about 2 or 3 seeds every 6-8 inches apart and applied the fertilizer (in the furrow with the beans), then covered the furrow up with the garden rake and NOT the row hippers this time (or ever again)! Lol!!... Sure hope I did everything right and that they grow!
I used to use the crop netting with wire on the top but the vines were waaay too heavy. Now I'm using 20'x8' concrete reinforcement wire. I connected the tops together to form an arch. The louisiana purple pods grow all the way to the top and hang down thru the trellis. Makes for easy pickin. I'll make and post a video tommorrow.
@TheSavvySwede ... I don't reuse the netting where the pole beans are planted but it certainly can be if you want to take the time and remove all the vines. I do reuse the netting for my Cucuzza Squash. It's been sitting out in the weather going on 2 years now....... Donald
Awesome Thanks For Taking the time to post realy like your videos what size and type rope did you use did you get also from Memphis Net & Twine Thanks Again David
@southgeorgiagardener ...At first I would suggest planting the bush type which doesn't need support. I'm trying Jackson Wonder this year. Glad you enjoy the videos.....Donald
The netting holds up extremely well. I had a section about 75 ft. long that I left up to grow Cucuzza squash on for 3 years. It can be reused if you take the time to remove all the vines. I just throw it away at the end of the season……Donald
@easein ... with the right tools it's pretty easy. I do have grass and weeds out there just not really a big problem. Glad you enjoy the videos.......... Donald
Thank you so much for all of the know how. I am a newbie and all of your tips are soooo appreciated. Now all I need is a month to month list of what to plant up in north west Georgia?
plan to use this method in 2014! looking for the netting to buy, if I don't find it local then I will buy online from Memphis Net and Twine. Have tons of Tposts already! I am south of Houston Tx. plan to use this for my cukes too instead of hog panels - your method much lighter and easier. really love your videos!
Donald - I love your videos. I live out on the Left Coast and there is not a lot of common sense to be found. I appreciate all you do for those of us who want to feed our families off of our land. What happens at the end of the season with the vines? Love those Blue Lake beans as well. Keep your health. Larry P.
Great video. I have my beans in with trellis but this looks much easier. When I fix my raised bed outside I thin of going with your way instead of the trellis. Thanks
To me it makes growing pole beans a pleasure again. If you take the time (which I don’t any more) you can remove all the vines and reuse it again. I’ve had some out in the weather (24/7) for 3 years and could have used it yet another year. Pretty tough stuff……Donald
@hgildein I plan on using carboard in between all my rows of vegetables this year. It should work great to supress the weeds. I don't like using plastic because it's attracted snakes before, is slippery when wet and it won't compost back in. My garden is 27x25 roughly and I have a hard time coming up with things to compost. I use leaves but it's just not enough. I don't have a bagger for my mower so grass cuttings is out. Not sure what else I can use except some aged horse manure .
@emt845 ... it really comes in handy when it's time to take the netting down. I go along and cut the plants even with the ground so I can remove the netting in long sections......... Donald
Hey Donald can you tell me where you got your netting? The stuff that Burpie sells didnt have very good reviews at all. Thanks. Glad to see you back also.
Your garden is so big. Someday i would like to have a garden that big. Just started a 24' x 24' garden with peas, carrots, radishes, potatoes and som other stuff. I would like to do more if I am any good at it.
Like your vids & what your doing Donald....I have 2 questions...1: Due to length of land restrictions i have would i be able to take your technique. Use more space just simply taking the CROP NETTING on each side of the twine and kind of creating an "A" frame netting? that way i can double up my crop but they will still have thier own NETTING to grow up on with only the one TWINE & T-POST setup? 2: I should be able to use this for TOMATOE plants as well right...?
@svtcontour ... I think it's going to be a dry summer again this year, hope not but it's just a feeling. Glad you enjoy hope you have a good one too......... Donald
I still plan on green beans I got some top crop and kentucky wonder pole beans and some other forget the variety at the moment!I still have not got all my tomatoes out like 25 more or so.Thinking about putting some out in my neighbors yard for him I have enough lol.My cucumbers came up so proud of them too but that 3rd pack of seeds must be all duds nothing happenning at all soaked them just like the others only difference one day later planting them haha oh well thats how the seed bounces !!
according to the stokes gardening guide pole beans will only grow vertically up poles or trellises. if left to grow horizontally they will wind around each other and chock each other out. any comments
Hey Donald, I was reading about planting pole beans and came across a little information that I really didn't know how to take it. This is what it said "Beans do not do well in a wide row planting. They must have room on either side for maximum production". Can you put this into simple terms for me? I space my rows 4 feet apart and was wondering if I needed to bring them a little closer. Thank you sir for your help.
Donald, you da man... these videos are awesome... from one middle-aging portly guy to another... thanks a million for the tips and suggestions... and can you tell me the Cajun stuff you say at the beginning and the end... thanks again.. I certainly subscribed to this...

I enjoy watching your easy going narrative and methodical farming technique. Ut is good way to spend your retirement in the south.
RIP Donald. Crazy how quick the years have past by.
I like it when big guys show you how to do things. Show you how to do stuff the easy way.
It works for not so big guys too…..Donald

Great videos Don. Been a few years since my last garden. Your videos have inspired me to get back out in the garden, thanks and give Lucy a carrot for me.
It is nice to go shopping in your garden for fresh vegetables. Just can’t beat the flavor…..Donald

12 years later and we are...lol..Lakeland florida here
real smart with your netting, leaving clear space at ground level for weeding access! you have a lot of gardening wisdom my man!
Thanks, years learning what and what not to do.....Donald
Bryan, who posted below asked my question. Now I know where to get the netting. That is a great set up. Thanks for sharing it.
The netting is very easy to work with.....Donald
I'm twelve from South Illinois and this is really neat!!!!! I'm a huge fan! Thanks!
Unless you’re trying to beat the rain there’s really no need to rush in the garden, relax and enjoy. : ) …..Donald
Another informative video. I never thought of leaving the netting a little above the ground. Great idea. Thanks Donald. Hope you have a great growing season.
you inspired me with this video im going to go plant some beans asap thank god for people like you sir

Great video.. Ive watched it 3 times. I am a new gardener and this can be done on a smaller scale too. Thanks so much for sharing
Second row in the big garden, love that. The little garden is bigger than my back yard.
:-) …..Donald
I admire how neat and orderly your garden is, you must be a long time practitioner of gardening
As far back as I can remember the family has grown a garden. It's just something we enjoy doing.....Donald
We used to raise gardens when I was a kid too and they never looked THAT good; you're being modest, it's just plain old wisdom from experience
Great video! Just bought netting and Louisiana Purple Pole Beans -- the plan is to attach the net to the eaves over the porch and grow beans up it to provide a lot of shade for the windows/house here in Georgia. Sure hope it works. :)
Let us know how well it works.....Donald

I got some great ideas from you Donald. I hope you are recovering well !
I do like to keep things as simple as they really are. Glad you enjoy the videos......Donald
Thanks for the advice. My first time planting pole beans ( in Florida) . Wish me luck!

You're very welcome.....Donald
It’s ¼ inch yellow twisted polypropylene also from Memphis net and twine. It works real well cause it stretches very little in the heat…..Donald
I really enjoy your videos - have learned alot - thanks from South Alabama.
Hola Donald , I really like your cooking, it
Nice! Great reason for your selection of the 48" netting.
Nylon Ties sound like a great idea, they are cheap and strong. Gonna use those ties on my raised bed for Kentucky Wonder. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you found the video helpful......Donald
@TheWarscoming ... It is nice to have plenty room to play in. Glad you enjoy the videos.......Donald

Hey Ronald, yes it’s ¼ inch polypropylene. One size fits all, you can use it for both the beans and tomatoes…..Donald
@TheSavvySwede ... I don't reuse the netting where the pole beans are planted but it certainly can be if you want to take the time and remove all the vines. I do reuse the netting for my Cucuzza Squash. It's been sitting out in the weather going on 2 years now....... Donald
Oh yeah, The music is great, love his accent. Makes me crave some Low Country Boil...
Awesome Thanks For Taking the time to post realy like your videos
what size and type rope did you use
did you get also from Memphis Net & Twine
Thanks Again
David
@southgeorgiagardener ...At first I would suggest planting the bush type which doesn't need support. I'm trying Jackson Wonder this year. Glad you enjoy the videos.....Donald
@Canoots ... You can use it for the pole beans, cucumbers, cucuzza squash and sugar snap peas for sure.......Donald

Your local county agent should be able to help. They have lots of printed information to hand out…..Donald
plan to use this method in 2014! looking for the netting to buy, if I don't find it local then I will buy online from Memphis Net and Twine. Have tons of Tposts already! I am south of Houston Tx. plan to use this for my cukes too instead of hog panels - your method much lighter and easier. really love your videos!

Thanks for putting out another grate video. I have learnt so much from you. I love your video's.
Great video. I have my beans in with trellis but this looks much easier. When I fix my raised bed outside I thin of going with your way instead of the trellis. Thanks
This works well on any vine crop , watermelons, cantelope , squash / zucchini etc. , you just have to support the heavier fruits with a sling .
To me it makes growing pole beans a pleasure again. If you take the time (which I don’t any more) you can remove all the vines and reuse it again. I’ve had some out in the weather (24/7) for 3 years and could have used it yet another year. Pretty tough stuff……Donald
Your an excellent gardener!!
Great videos. Lots of good information. Have implemented several of your ideas. Thanks for sharing your time.
Hey Ken, glad you found it helpful….Donald
Excellent videos, clear and precise details, good description many thanks!!
You’re welcome….Donald
Helpful video. Would you use wire fence over crop netting? Or is crop netting a matter of preference?
Donald
@MrsDomestics ...Glad ya'll enjoy the videos. Loshepa can mean several things one is "hang in there, don't give up".......Donald
I like running a string along the bottom too so wind don’t pull plants up.
Hey Donald can you tell me where you got your netting? The stuff that Burpie sells didnt have very good reviews at all. Thanks. Glad to see you back also.
I absolutely Love your videos! Thanks for making them!
Your garden is so big. Someday i would like to have a garden that big. Just started a 24' x 24' garden with peas, carrots, radishes, potatoes and som other stuff. I would like to do more if I am any good at it.
@MadBadVoodo ... a big thank you ...... Donald
RIP Man
Great video as always. I always learn lots and your videos are top notch with tons of character. Hope you have a great season by the way :)
@svtcontour ... I think it's going to be a dry summer again this year, hope not but it's just a feeling. Glad you enjoy hope you have a good one too......... Donald
@TheOntarioGardener ...It may be on the DVDs not sure. Just drive your post 12-18 ft. apart and you'll be just fine........Donald
@ivankinsman ... I think it's 1200 ft. per roll, plenty to play around with. Keep me updated on the garden.........
@polylingue ... glad you enjoyed and hope it helps......... Donald
according to the stokes gardening guide pole beans will only grow vertically up poles or trellises. if left to grow horizontally they will wind around each other and chock each other out. any comments
Awesome video. Just what I was needing. Great job.
Love your garden
Thanks :-) .....Donald
Thanks, this is now my modus operandi for all pole beans and peas :)
Glad you enjoyed and you're welcome......Donald
Hey Donald, I was reading about planting pole beans and came across a little information that I really didn't know how to take it. This is what it said "Beans do not do well in a wide row planting. They must have room on either side for maximum production". Can you put this into simple terms for me? I space my rows 4 feet apart and was wondering if I needed to bring them a little closer. Thank you sir for your help.
Do you reuse the crop netting or is it cheap enough to toss after the crop... thanks for you help....
Excellent work.
I'm doing this too but using woven wire fence and landscape fabric. No weeding 😁
Sounds good ……. Donald
Fantastic Donald!
Donald, you da man... these videos are awesome... from one middle-aging portly guy to another... thanks a million for the tips and suggestions... and can you tell me the Cajun stuff you say at the beginning and the end... thanks again.. I certainly
subscribed to this...
