@beadella1958 ... the problem is there are no "volunteer harvesters" in this part of the country. I tried giving them away and people were too lazy to come pick em so there wasn't but one thing to do. Many gardeners will tell you the same thing, people want you to pick em, process em and bring them to em for free. I don't mind helping folks who try to help themselves or are too old to get out.......Donald

I know what you mean. I have enjoyed your videos and am loving my first garden. I had far too many cucumbers and wanted to donate them but, was told that they were not able to accept them. I was sad. I am now making pickles. Not everyone is lazy and waiting for a handout but, sadly many are. I learned a lot this summer and am excited to plant a fall garden here in Western NC. I pray I do well. We suppliment our food to save $. Love watching you Donald! Your grandaughter is blessed to have you!

Okra can be picked every other day all summer long so a few plants go a long way. Thinking of only having 3 plants this year. Should be able to harvest, wash and cut up in less than 30 minutes…..Donald

Oh boy.. those were some beautiful plants! I moved to Ohio 14 years ago from Tx and last year was the first time I ever got Okra to grow for me. They were thin & spindly but I got enough for about 6 bags for the freezer so it worked for me.. finally. I had to get seed from my dad in S Tex for it to grow though. I saved my own for next year. I'd have come picked your okra as a Pick Ur Own..I love pickled okra.. Never enough for me. ;) Wish we were neighbors & friends! Blessings!

I think that there would be a sign on the road saying: "Okra for sale at below market price" to get someone else to pick it then mow the vines down. Okra is good with peas and beans and used down there in many Louisiana dishes. That is plenty of okra and you grow some great looking crops. I want to plant plenty of peas, Egg Plant, and Squash, as well as corn my first time. Thanks for sharing with us some tips on gardening.

That sounds like the large garden my father grew in Michigan. He had a very large garden on land belonging to a packing company who let him use it to keep the weeds down. It was in a residential area and no one stole any of the crop, although there wasn't much theft in this small area anyway. People want you to do everything for them and even deliver it to them. That is so sad.

@ironhead41 ... I picked em as long as I could but when the temps started hitting 100+ degrees during the day it was just too much for me to handle alone. Next year I'm thinking more like 250 feet of Okra. Glad you enjoyed......Donald

At least you've added organic material to your dirt there. I really think you just enjoy playing with your tractor... I probably would too.
Do you grow for an organization or this is your garden on a larger farm or something? Your setup looks very extravagant and huge for one family to eat from. It certainly looks like you have plenty of space and equipment to make enough for a farmers market or whatever. Kids would probably do a lot of the picking and processing for a little money.

Carlota Chmielewski problem with doing that is the wrong people come to ur property and will want to take every thing for free and if you don’t give in they come back at night and steal or destroy you plants . I have a hard time giving away for free as people don’t want it unless I pick clean and delivery to them then they will want me to cook it for them to people are lazy and don’t appreciate anything now adays I sell most veggie for $1 LB and all I get is it’s to expensive ask them to come get some free lettuce which I planted way to much of and they don’t show up grow for your selves teach those that want to Lean and the rest can go eat at McDonald’s

@@michaelwaldner3628 you also get those using the excuse of being there to case your place to come back later and take your other valuables as the “2nd picking”. Ahhh, Okra. That wonderful hot-weather plant that keeps on giving mais chais! I need me a tractor like that, poo-yie!
I ended up planting a 15 foot row and have a few bags of frozen cooked already. The plants are still putting out great amounts of pods and for the rest will be just cutting, vacuum packing and freezing them for later on. Going to see if the neighbors want some. The fancy leaf lettuce is growing in excess right now though and the romaine is getting close to being ready.

haha i loved this video. Im going to have to explore more of your 141 videos for sure. I am jealous because I just started gardening, started last year with a 4x8' raised bed, and planted about 8 clemson spineless okra plants in there (with other small plants too). They produced very well, but with the 8 plants, I only had enough okra to feed my family about once a week or so. This year I just finished tilling up a large section of my backyard so okra okra okra. Although not 1000' rows of it though.

@webcajun we had that problem last season with an acre of corn we planted just for folks to help themselves to. We had 2 friends come and pick what they needed. and then their kids and ours picked some for some of the seniors at both churches. We had plenty of folks say that they would take some if we picked it and brought it to them. The cows and goats feasted on some pretty pricey silage last year. Sad....

@buckstarchaser ... this is just a backyard garden. I will probably downsize a bit next year cause it does produce more than the family can eat. Do you use nitrogen on your okra? My okra never gets near the good looking. I was told not to use much fertilizer on it.

Did you end up with volunteer okra after tilling under those plants with the matured pods on them? Just curious...

Wondering why you would need that many okra seeds? But real farm and garden stores sell seed by the ounce or pound.
