C-5 flight engineer from 86 -94. C-5B's were the best office I ever sat in. Nothing else like the TF-39 engines. I am so fortunate the taxpayers allowed me to have this opportunity to serve in the crisis we had in my time of service, Just Cause, the 1st Gulf War, and Somalia. The absolute most rewarding challenges of my life.
Did twenty five years in the ANG, and through all of my travels, I never got to fly on a C-5 in any capacity which I regret. Flew on plenty of C-130’s, KC-135’s, a C-141, and a few C-17’s, but never the Galaxy. What an amazing aircraft she is, and I still feel amazed that something that big can fly and do it with ease and grace.
Thank you for the video! Most all aircraft are works of art, but the C5 is really something else and utterly amazing to behold. Thanks again for the video. NF
You got that right this new engines I want to call him junk but they're not they don't have that sound, a Russian guy said it's the sound of America!!!!
I was in the Air Force and the first C5A i saw was when i was standing on the roof of our dorm (don't tell anyone i was there lol) anyways that was back in 73. I worked at all 18 Titan 2 missile sites surrounding McConnell AFB Kansas.
Finally at 18:40 and at 24:30 is the sweetest sound of any airplane there ever was! Now they are a lot quieter and they make touch and go landings here at Bangor International about every week and i really don't care to go watch and hear them. A few weeks ago Air Force One came here to make touch and go landings too. We also have other 747's make touch and go landings but not as often as they used to.
Roger Dat !! At 18:40 // When those "Four Tyres" on the FRONT { each tyre weighing 250 lbs } Leave the ground, we say that the Aircraft has Rotated...the thing is bookin' at 170 mph !!
The C-5M sounds _exactly_ like a 747-400 fitted with CF6-80C2 engines. (Well, it is the same engine. It's designated F138-100 for use on the C-5M). As for the C-5A/B models, the GE TF39 has a very distinctly unique sound because this was a true first-generation high-bypass engine, and front fan design results in the very distinct "growl" flying towards you and the equally distinct high-pitched whine flying away from you. Interestingly, the GE CF6-6 found on the first production DC-10's didn't sound like the TF39, probably due to a completely different front fan design that had lower noise levels than the TF39.
dislike the fact that USAF replaced one of the best sounding engines (and one of the loudest) with a plain sounding engine that is much quieter #BringBackTheTF39
USAF main priority was to keep the C-5 alive for as long as possible, and those TF39s weren't adequate anymore: they reduced the plane's playload due to their relatively low power output, they burnt a lot more fuel compared to modern engines and they were expensive to maintain. Also their loud noise might be good for us aviation enthusiasts, but for normal people that rumble is just annoying. The TF39s were amazing sounding engines, no doubt, but they didn't offer any practical advantage over the new CF6s

I was lucky to see the AN225 take off here at Bangor International a few years ago and it had been here several times altogether.

I sure wish that the C5 Galaxy fleet still operate the TF-39 engines. Music to my ears.
Me too!

18:08 A C5 next to an AN124, quite a scene
Try 18:57, with the C5, AN-124 and the 747 in the background, when the C-5 Galaxy was rotating on its takeoff 🛫 roll.
