- For the auction of this Porsche 956 we invited Tim Ali along to take us through the history of this legendary machine...
Porsche’s involvement in motorsport can be traced back to the lightweight alloy-bodied 356 SL, which entered the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans and won its class on the first attempt. Since then, it has won the Le Mans race outright 19 times, and remains one of the world’s largest volume manufacturers of racing cars, thanks to the enduring popularity of the 911 GT3 Cup.
Representing arguably a ‘golden era’ of motorsport, the Porsche 956 and its successor the 962 are among the most iconic of the marque’s racing cars. Collectively they won scores of races in the hands of some of the most famous names of their day - and 956-118 is no exception, having been co-driven to outright victory on two occasions by Vern Schuppan.

A beautiful and deadly race car design.
Genuinely thought I would have been disappointed as a long time fan of Mr Harris, but mate, introduce yourself and come front and centre, more of this content please, as a fellow Aussie in Motorsport I adore seeing some of the super special cars living on our island get the limelight. Awesome video lads, more please👍
Please do more of these kinds of videos. Fantastic! I'd appreciate making the video a bit longer and diving into the ('nerdy') technicalities and history much more.
The 956 is peak definition of beautiful monster. 🤌
Bring back the podcast!!!
Hear hear!
Chris has left CC but will bring back the podcast with most of the same guys
@@geraldkottler3014 hope so! 🤞🏽
Harris is back today on TH-cam! Chris Harris and friends podcast is the one to search for! 😊
I love this❤ Nothing is designed for sake of design, only sake of engineering and to work! Still what a beautiful car! Such incredible!!
Great video! Love Porsche racing history and the 956 among the best in history!
8:44 On the right I spy the reflection of a Kremer CK6 in the unmistakable Leyton House aquamarine blue and bright orange livery. Beautiful machine!
Bring back Mr Harris !!!!
What happened? Did he leave the channel?
@@robinkrton he did. Via his Instagram announcement
Chris has left CC, reason still unknown to the public. He is planning on bringing back the podcast.
Legendary
What I take away from this is that those guys that drove these cars back in the Group C days were machines. The Steve Kempnich video of him driving down the straight in the rain with all the vibration and noise and rain is nuts. The adrenaline must have been next fing level. Wish so much a Group C type championship with NA non-hybrid cars would come back.
That was lovely, thank you
Really well put together presentation…subscribed
ありがとうございます。
Gorgeous car as well the livery.
A great overview! What a stunning machine.
Great video! :) learned a lot :)
The term "icon" is much overused and misused these days. When applied to the 956 and 962, that is very much not the case. What a car!🤩
Not the same without Chris
The difference is Chris would re-drive this thing again vs yap about it😂
Peak motorsport.
where's Chris Harris?
Chris Harris!
The engine is 2.65 litres
🤩🤩🤩
Harris has left to start a new podcast.
What is that horrendous background music. Sheesh.
Where is Harris......
The 956 is different from the 917? They raced at the same time?
917 was about 10 years earlier, bigger engine but non turbo, and only 4 speed gearbox.
@@althejazzman Thank-you!
917-30 was raced in CanAm. It was turbo charged.
@@briancavanagh7048 Thanks I couldn't remember the details.
最高
why isn't chris harris doing videos lately?
🤩
My name is sam oates bideford and demi the dog
Hello whoever you are - why not introduce yourself at the beginning of the video?
I recognise that guy - that’s Tim Ali from Days Of Our Drives! Awesome videographer. Didn’t realise he was such a good presenter too
You wouldn't want to be someone who is claustrophobic😬

350km/h?
Koenig And Dauer road legal versions made 380km/h...
This racing prototype with right fuel, low drag set-up and in ideal conditions should reach 400km/h....
Those were 962, the car that looks very similar, but quite a little bit different. They had 6 inch longer wheelbase, a fully water cooled engine that made north of 750 hp and also had more refined aero.
Also Dauer actually reached 405 kph at Ehra-Lessin VW test track during independent test in 1997
