Watched this video all the way through while I replaced my oil cooler. Easy to understand with a sense of humor. My torque wrench doesn't measure the same as yours. So I had to look up my specs. Other than that, you deserve a like and thumbs up!
Thank you for including the torque sequences and torque specifications. There are several videos on replacing the 3.6 oil cooler, but I kept referring to yours to guide me through this job. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thank you for the video. I did mine. I replaced all my parts with dorman aluminum upgrades. Including coolant crossover, thermostat housing and timing cover. Wish they had aluminum valve cover.
Very good video, thank you for taking the time to share this information with us. My 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan is at a dealership and this problem somehow, all of a sudden, happened while they were replacing the power module. The engine had never leaked oil before, so I'm still skeptical as to how it developed a 'major oil leak' while being at their shop. After you explained this is common, I'm still concerned and fairly skeptical, but not as upset with the shop as I originally was. Thanks again...
It is very common and the valley on top of the engine will probably hold a couple quarts before it fills enough to start running out and on to the ground. Sure they check every one of them because they are a money maker!
Called a auto mechanic and was going to cost $800 to fix and $350 if i bought the part. I bought the part online for $130 and spent 3 hours putting it in. Not sure if its working yet but no leak so far
Any info on what causes the leak and /or where on the housing it leaks. I watched the guy at the oil change station crank down on the oil filter element cover with a socket and a breaker bar until it creaked. You know the sound I’m talking about! 🤪 2016 Dodge Caravan.
Pretty sure this is my next job on my wife’s 14 grand caravan. Noticed an oil leak an seems to be from exactly where you’ve shown. Not sure if there’s another way to tell but so far it looks like this is it.
Thank you very much for the time and effort you put into this video. I have the same problem. I noticed recently my alternator went bad and I just changed it. I also noticed oil on top of the transmission on my dodge grand caravan, it's pretty much the same engine you have. The last time I changed the alternator I found a lot of dry oil on top of it but I didn't pay much attention to it. I think the oil cooler housing is busted and I'm ready to change it. Do you think this cooling housing is the reason the alternator keeps going bad? I really appreciate the video and I hope you can get back to me as soon as possible with your thoughts on this. Also what do you think about the oil cooling housing that's all aluminum instead of the plastic one?
Sorry for the slow reply. Had surgery. Hard to say for sure. If the alternator is getting bathed in oil and coolant then yes. I am so have always had really bad luck with remanufactured alternators. I don't install them unless I can't find a new option.
Great video! Got a question. After getting done with the install. My caravan is running hot. Never a problem, before. The hose at bottom of oil cooler is the only coolant hose that is disconnected and returned, correct? And could I have got an air pocket in coolant? I did refill coolant to max line after install.
I believe there is an air bleeder screw on the top left side of the engine on the thermostat I believe open that and when you're filling the radiator watch for coolant coming out then close it
@bmg9181 ya good luck with those I've heard they fail too I guess no solution lasts forever so far may as well buy all mopar spend $500 have it last another 150k miles then break. As long as they don't torque down that oil filter cap at the quick oil change places... first thing I am going to try is just replacing seals fel pro makes a good kit.
Very common. Do them all the time. This engine is in everything from the Jeep Wrangler to the Volkswagen Routan. Sometimes they crack but most of the time they just leak....
I put petroleum jelly on all of my gaskets and o-rings. Not sure where your leak is but the only why to know for sure is to take it apart and look at it. Sorry
That 3.6l chrysler pentastar would probably run for a million miles if they designed the oil and coolant system a little better and not made of plastic. But then they wouldn't have made much money off of it they have probably sold half million or more oil filter housings at $500 a pop that's lot's of revenue. It's been a very common problem around 160k to 200k miles for these engines.
Not covering the intake ports on the cylinder heads just gives me the heeby-jeebys. If you have not had to remove a head to get a socket or nut out.................well, you just haven't lived.
Shot out to the Chrysler engineers, that figure out this was a great location for their purposely fragile made brittle plastic oil cooler. I got to give it to them, they could had copy Toyota or Honda ideas, but no, they always come up with their own original ideas.
Lmao. The oh shit I broke something. I’ve learned my lesson though now I check before going ape shit n pullin stuff. That’s why I’m here but you moved past what I need to see.
Great video! Can't wait to watch it a couple more times then do mine! Thank you for being thorough! :)
Hopefully you got it taken care of!

Well done!
Having this done on our van today!! Very big job!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Good video your wrench wich company name please
Wow you are amazing man. Thanks i have that problem here.

@@Brandonlexx1Thank you for responding...and yes, they quoted me a repair cost of $1,500... So you're right about it being a money maker... :)
I do them for significantly less but they are the dealer... Best of luck to you!
Great vid. Very helpful
Appreciate it.
Glad it was helpful!
I have to do this repair and a job specific torque wrench is not in my toolbox yet! Please help!
Called a auto mechanic and was going to cost $800 to fix and $350 if i bought the part.
I bought the part online for $130 and spent 3 hours putting it in. Not sure if its working yet but no leak so far
Did you have a coolant leak or oil leak? I have a coolant leak under the intake and seeping onto the transmission on my 2013 dodge caravan
@@iJustB58 yes I do have coolant leak
You buy parts online, who knows what you're getting. 🤷 Glad it worked out!
Approx how much coolant is actually drained? Is it the whole system? Just wondering how many liters I'll need to buy.

2016 Dodge Caravan.
Sometimes the filter housing cracks. Most of the time they just leak at the O-rings underneath.
Pretty sure this is my next job on my wife’s 14 grand caravan. Noticed an oil leak an seems to be from exactly where you’ve shown. Not sure if there’s another way to tell but so far it looks like this is it.
I'd bet you a nickel!

Where can i get the torque spec and sequence from?
This video.
Very helpful. Thanks!

Sorry for the slow response. I am sure you have it figured out now but I would bet money you had an air bubble. Yes only the one coolant hose.
I believe there is an air bleeder screw on the top left side of the engine on the thermostat I believe open that and when you're filling the radiator watch for coolant coming out then close it
What are torque specs.? What kind of torque wrench did you use? Please be specific.
Sorry for the slow response. Just an inch/lbs mechanical.
Could this cause milky coolant?
Failure inside the cooler could.
Can this also cause coolant leak
Absolutely
where did you buy the replacement part?
This is a dealer replacement part but Dorman now makes an all aluminum housing. I think it is a good replacement.
Amazon has an aluminum oil filter housing for $103
@@bmg9181 I'll look it up thanks

This just happened to my 2013 Grand Caravan,Is this common why they fail?
Very common. Do them all the time. This engine is in everything from the Jeep Wrangler to the Volkswagen Routan. Sometimes they crack but most of the time they just leak....
Where r u located
Northern Utah
Any idea why the place where you put the jelly leaks on my new cooler?
I put petroleum jelly on all of my gaskets and o-rings. Not sure where your leak is but the only why to know for sure is to take it apart and look at it. Sorry
I’m looking at a 2010 11 Chrysler caravan is this gonna be an issue?is this something that should be done first ?
The 3.6 is a pretty solid engine. I wouldn't let this deter you from buying it. It may be an expense down the road but all vehicles have expenses.
Thank you
Will these also cause coolant to leak from?
Absolutely. Oil and coolant both run through the cooler in attempt to keep them both close to the same temperature.
That 3.6l chrysler pentastar would probably run for a million miles if they designed the oil and coolant system a little better and not made of plastic. Lol. Great for mechanics. We do a lot of them.

Sorry, slow and steady wins the race!
👍
I've seen some idiotic engineering in my time working on cars, but this sets the bar for stupidity. This should be a Three Stooges episode..
Also Volkswagen Routan
Absolutely! Many Chrysler vehicle's have this 3.6. We do a lot of them.
