I went to a Community College for a 2 year program in Electrical Science and took 3 extra courses in Electronics. I've working for an Utility company as a Technician for 3 years now and making over $100K per year...

@@karlstrauss2330 stop. You dont need that much intelligence to get a similar degree. If you can do high school algebra and trigonometry then you can work in a job with electricity. Us engineers do the heavy lifting in our studies so the techs dont have to.

I had to do my GED at 27yrs old as I dropped out of high school at a young age. I'm not that smart, I was just blessed to have a great wife that believed in me. I'm just an average guy and I know you can do it too.

That is the way to go. I had to get 5 yr bachelor + master's accounting degree to start at 70K, to get to 100K at 5 yr mark even at the big 4 accounting firm... you def did better than I did...

Sociology is the study of demographics and social work is public service. They are entirely two different degrees and careers but I agree the pay is terrible for both degrees

Accounting is not on the list of "most regretted degrees" Accounting is a solid profession if you get your CPA license. but finance on the other hand is not the same as accounting. I don;t recommend people to major in finance, because simply the widespread use of credit scores is replacing the skillset of a finance major. Finance skills are becoming automated with computer software and bank software. Thats why big banks always have software developer positions open on their career website over finance majors.

Unless your degree is specialized it’s virtually worthless. You know what I can do with my business administration degree?? I can wipe my ass with it. That’s pretty much it. Never been asked to even show it to prove I received it. But the college got their $40k+.
They should ban general based degrees and downgrade them as minors and certificate programs.
I have 4 yr bachelor degree, 1 MA accounting degree, and MBA degree.... thank goodness I barely paid for any of those (mix of scholarships, employer tuition assistance, and VA funding as a vet). I really do not regret my degrees. If I have a student loan on my back, I think I might regret some of them. Just be financially responsible when you get the degrees.

You're completely wrong. Your problem is that you're conflating college major with career. Majoring in journalism or liberal arts doesn't mean you have to be a journalist or professor. Regretting your college degree doesn't mean you regret your career.
Many people who major in stuff like English, History, Literature, etc, go into business, politics, consulting, law, medicine, and other highly paid professions. I think most presidents of the United States in the modern era have Bachelor of Arts degrees in stuff like history, political science (which is history), etc. The most famous epidemiologist in the country majored in classics (Greek). Steve Jobs credits his college calligraphy class as being the most influential class he took. He didn't go to Bethel Tech.
Also, I just checked out Bethel Tech. What the #$% is a "faith-based tech school?" How does one's belief in the supernatural have anything to do with coding? That's just crazy!

Liberal arts degrees can be salvaged by vocational supplementation or applying to jobs which just require a bachelors without much technical knowledge. These jobs are still there in high progressive credentialism states like NY and CA where even for some paralegal positions and government jobs see it to be favorable if you have a bachelors.
Bachelor's of Fine Arts here, and I've worked in web development since I graduated. 15 years later I own my own business now and make over 6 figures. I wish I could have told 18 year old me not to go to college. I thought that was what I had to do after high school, so I ended up in art school. Not casting blame anywhere, just saying I shouldn't have done it. I'm debt free now and own a house, so I'm fine.
Similar story here. I also graduated with a BFA and have been working in graphic design since then. If I could do it over, I would have taken a college program instead.
Same here and my degree in IT cost $40k and make 3-4x that now with amazing benefits.
Ditto - Theatre Arts degree here. Went to several casting calls in LA just to be told I was too short and too fat (even though I was average weight for my height [5'2"] at the time). Went into the tourism industry in the National Parks, had a very fun 4-year interlude as a DJ, and am now a freelance writer by day, bass player in a cover band by night. No, I'm not rich, but have paid off 1 house, have an 850 credit rating, a roof over my head, and food in the fridge. I just wish my parents, school guidance counselors, etc., wouldn't have pounded so hard on the "you're not gonna amount to anything if you don't go to college" cr@p.
Didn’t go get a degree, instead joined the military where they taught me how to work on Airplanes. And now I’m in the civilian sector making 6 figures in North Carolina and many job offers for around the same pay in many other states every week. I hid my resume from Indeed (where I got this job) but my profile can’t be hidden so I still get offers

General Studies grad here 🙋 also graduated with a Marketing Undergrad cert. I think it's worked out for me so far. Making $72k
But I was also experienced in the Marketing field so I think adding the degree on my resume was more like adding sprinkles.

I’m in community college, for Business major. I’m mostly in my comfort zone. That I’m not good in school, that I stopped going. Wasting time & money. & could learn more from retail business. & start researching more on certifications on business major . That I could find high paying jobs easily.
Got a degree in biology. Ended up going into trade. Be carful what you are getting yourself into.
I also did the biology track in undergrad, and am now in dental school. My entire life I've wanted to be a dentist and I love what I am doing but I don't think biology as a bachelors degree was as important as I perceived it to be. The bulk of our real-world (clinical) education comes in dental school, not undergrad.
If I could do it again I probably would have majored in computer science or engineering and taken the science prereqs during the summer.
@@stevenlopez1717 Look at bright side. You got calculus 1, and the organic chemistry done. Best to self teach calculus 2-3, linear algebra and differential equation with calc based physics.

I have a Bachelor's in Marketing. My first major was accounting and I didn't like it. I then talked to my college advisor and he said that if I switched to either Marketing or Finance I could actually graduate 1 semester earlier than projected due to the credit hours I had. I remember thinking to myself 'what am I going to do, work in a bank all day?' and chose the marketing degree instead. I had heard from professors how all of these people with marketing degrees were getting hired, so I was enthused about the prospects.
Fast forward to a few years later and I started to see that Marketing degrees suck. Most of the jobs in marketing are really sales jobs. The administrative jobs in marketing most bosses think anybody with a 4-year degree in any subject can do them. And the marketing department is often the red headed stepchild of the company. I've worked for companies that have valued call centers over marketing departments.
Luckily I was smart enough to have a minor in Applied Mathematics. It took me a while to understand that I needed to get a job that wasn't in a marketing department and everything has been upward and onward from there.
Whatever you do steer clear of sales. I’ll be lucky if I am able to make $300k this year using my bachelors in marketing to do sales.

2. The overwhelming majority of sales jobs, even the high paying ones, don't require a degree in marketing. In fact, many of them don't even require a degree. If you could have the money you spent on college tuition back and still have the same job, you would take it.
3. Sales isn't for everybody.
4. One of the most regretted degrees on the list Ken showed was 'Marketing.'
5. Compare that to the Finance degree that I could have received where banks and financial institutions often pay just as well as your job and it's the norm for banks to require at least a 4-year degree, specifically in something like Finance. By proxy, this makes a Finance degree more valuable and the student gets more bang for their buck. It's also one of the reasons why Finance was ranked as one of the least regretted college degrees.

2)The majority of sales jobs that pay what I make do require a degree. Go look for a job in med tech sales without a degree.
3)Most people can’t do sales. That’s why they sit in a cube and do the boring stuff getting paid far less.
4)Sales people with business degrees have a far easier time transitioning into other departments when they want to do so. No reason a person with a business degree can’t do finance for example.
@@edhcb9359 You brought up how much you make working in sales as a way to disprove being disastified with a marketing degree, one of the most regretted college degrees on the list. And yes, you should care about what the typical earnings are for the job you're most likely to get from a certain degree that you are paying a lot of money for. Only a fool wouldn't and that's why so many people have ridiculous amounts of college loan debt that they can't get away from.
And does a med tech sales job require a marketing degree? No, it doesn't. One of my good friends works in med tech sales and his degree is in History.
Most banks and financial institutions won't even look at you for the middle-to-upper tier positions unless you have a specific degree focused towards finance, banking or economics.
@@Richie3Jack You and I differ in that I look at life and careers in terms of what is possible, and you look at what is probable(based on what the typical unmotivated American millennial would achieve I suppose). Ken looks at life through the same lens as you. As far as me wishing I could have my same career with no degree or a history degree(like your friend), no thanks! My degree in business is allowing me to manage my personal finances much better putting me further ahead. As far as any degree being “regrettable” that’s just a person looking for something to blame other than themselves.

I have to speak against a Criminology/ Criminal Justice degree. From my perspective (former federal agent, current correction officer) a CJ degree did nothing for me except give me a few points on a test. Working both with the feds and in prisons I’ve seen several people at the same level up through admin with just a HS diploma and making the same as me (or more in the case of admin). Unfortunately it was a waste of time and money.
If it gave you a few points on a test, it’s not a waste.
Many local departments require a 2 year degree minimum with a 4 year degree preferred. Most federal agencies require a 4 year degree with a masters preferred. CJ isn't preferred over other majors, though. If anything, they prefer STEM, law, or accounting.
@@NathanD.-yo8zg CJ may not be preferred, but it wouldn’t be a waste. Additional vocational coursework helps in reducing the risk.
When I was in school I knew some people who were getting sociology degrees because they were looking for an "easy" degree. So in the top three most regretted degrees you have at least two of them where people were trying to just graduate in something (sociology and general studies). They don't have any passion for what they studied to save them when they run into difficulties--and everyone does from time to time. They also didn't get anything marketable or probably even thought much about how to make their degree marketable.
Most of those graduates never go to law and med school. Psych and social licensing need mandatory 2 or more year med and law school programs.
What job are you supposed to get with a sociology degree?
It's important to point out that some of these could be regretted majors because it wasn't that person's cup of tea after all. Many people with college degrees had to choose their major before the age of 20! you know nothing at that age (I'm 26). My degree is Political Science and I got lucky enough to be recruited by a large consulting firm that was looking for criminal justice/polisci majors at the time. Unfortunately, I couldn't say my classmates had the same luck I did.
Throw another one out there that people should look into which is occupational health and safety.

Eh, a bit hyperbole there, Ken. I will agree if you just get a Bachelor’s degree and just stop, then yes, it’s “worthless.” The key is to roll it over into a viable Master’s degree. I know folks that got general studies and then rolled it over into a viable Master’s of some kind. The key is also to not take loans out for these degrees.
Some those master degrees (except, stem and business degrees) need to be med, educational/stem graduates, and law school programs.
Construction trades gets you into the higher levels at GCs much easier where the money is on par with engineering

But for STEM degrees you should get a degree at least a Associates, I got a two yr in CIS and my bachelor's in CIS. i also learned electronics on the way and I now work in a network engineer department at an organization. I was a nontraditional college student. Worked and went to school. Blended my troubleshooting skills in electronics into networks.

@@maroon9273 Hi there, I took some classes in a community college and high school, but this was before the Internet was a thing. I actually worked in a warehouse, then a telecom company as a clerical assistant. After that I was employed at a blood bank as a distribution tech. I then became a bio med and started working on medical devices. By then you tube was a thing, then I started re-learning electronics. You can learn electronics by self study. If you do not have means on getting on the Internet you can go-to your library. I did both I actually bought a book on electronics and browse the Internet for information. You do not have to go to school for this. You can self learn. That's what I did. But if you want to be an engineer then you might have to go-to school, but if you want to get a job as a tech all you need is the ability to learn. You will need a bread board and maybe a cheap multi- meter to start your journey. There is a lot of math but if you take it slow you can do it. You need to learn how to transpose formulas and experiment by putting components together to see the relationship of values. I would use the formulas to calculate my values to predict what was happening in my labs. That is the best way. When you learn ac theory you will need to learn trigonometry to calculate reactance and phase shift between voltage and current. Also, you can buy a cheap oscilloscope and a frequency generators to view the types of sine waves in your labs. Hope this helps.
It is better to get a accredited online degree in accounting over the course of 8 years than a business degree in 4 at any university.

Trade school is where it's at folks.
I work as a software dev and you can tell when somebody doesn't have a computer science background. It usually is noticed in small or amusing ways, like I worked with a dev who thought he came up with a novel way to do something and he had just come up with a standard technique for that problem (don't remember what it was). Sometimes it's more concerning like when you have to argue with somebody that we should just use a standard technique because they hadn't heard of it or don't understand it and they think it's wrong and haven't read up on it.
i got a Computer information systems degree but did not learn to program. What should i do to learn? I started taking a class at community college since I don't have the discipline to learn without being held accountable. Any advice?
@@eddieblake097 Play with stuff. There are a ton of tutorials online. If your class uses language X, try to apply the concepts you learn in a different language, the more different the better (java and python are a good pair). See how languages are largely the same but can also be quite different. As you get further in, if you think you could tackle a computer problem you'd like to solve for yourself, give it a try. Learn what gaps you have and see if your class will teach it or look into it yourself. If there's something you want made, that would hopefully help with the discipline.

@@eddieblake097 Need? No. I would think it'd be helpful. I also know these code camps are becoming more popular and more accepted by employers. I don't know any details. We also don't know long term if people from code camps on average are more limited in where their career can go, or if it'll be the same. Some places are probably excluding graduates of those programs because there have been some bad ones and there's kind of a bad taste around certifications which is kind of similar. There are probably places that have their own good and bad list of these programs and some places that just care about how you do in the interview. If there are any places in particular you want to work, it would be worth trying to find a contact with HR or a manager/director and see how they view it and make your decision from what you want to do from there.
i work in app support atm but it seems like they want me to move into a developer role. I am happy to oblige I just feel like I'm starting from scratch, which is probably just my self esteem lol.
College graduates on average earn 40 percent more than their non college degree counter parts. Non stem degrees are still 25 percent on average higher. Sorry stats don't agree with you Colemang.

I became a nurse to get a job, which I can. I can make money and it is rewarding , but if I had it to do over I would major in English, get a Phd and teach in college or write. Which is what I love. :) I get irritated at Ken because he is so down on college education. Have you ever heard people talk about their J-O-B like it is an obscenity? Not everyone wants to work in tech.

The issue is that many of us were brainwashed into college. Many people that I went to HS with had no business going to school and they did while racking up thousands in debt. We all had to take a class in HS which was nothing but college reps coming and pitching their school. I took a few years off and got a full time job after HS. In my early to mid 20 I went to the local community college and can’t tell you how many people I ran into from HS who went away to college. College isn’t for everyone and certain colleges maybe your dream in HS but once you attend you realize it isn’t. Colleges are ridiculous. I work at a top liberal arts college like borderline Ivy and have taken a few courses after graduating from community college. It’s just more reading and writing with FAR more stuck up snotty people at the 60k year school. The teachers are worse than Community College. Just bc one is published or has a PHD doesn’t make them a good teacher.
So go cash flow a PhD in English. If it's your money do what you want with it.
Teaching at a college with an English phD is just as likely as becoming a famous singer. The job market is absolutely flooded, there are 5-10 applicants for each job, except most of the jobs are taken anyway. Even if you do get work, it won't be full time, you'll be brought in to teach a class or two, and that's it.

It's funny that a good number of employers request or require that applicants have one of those "regretted" or "useless" degrees in my field (publishing/editing/writing). It pretty much deters me from applying for jobs because I don't have any of those degrees, even though I have several years of PRACTICAL a.k.a. hands-on experience in that field. Sometimes I wish I'd gotten one of those degrees instead of another "useless" one I have (music).
At many fortune 100 companys, work experience and a good name can get you in the door .

Colllege isn't the problem. Ppl regret their degrees bc they hate jobs.Ppl hate their jobs bc they hate their paychecks and/or the people they work with.
Most of all are working HS level jobs outside of there degree.
Here's another food for thought, many of those majors/careers are absolutely necessary. We literally could not progress as a country without teachers, medical assistants, etc. It seems like maybe for these people the compensation is not worth the sacrifice. The cost of everything is so high nowadays, I don't blame them for regretting their career choice. I don't think the solution is for everyone to jump into technical types of jobs either. This video could be oversimplifying the issues many are facing.
I’m curious why Biology made the list. I assume it’s folks who decided not to go the route of becoming a doctor or surgeon as it’s usually reserved for Pre-Meds.
Biology is good for getting a government job.
Biology is hard. Lots of chemistry and physics involved and the pay for anything related to the degree is measly.
It's the pay and prospects, I'm doing two bio degrees and it does not look good, makes me wish I thought about it more but I was ignorant and young. I just hope I can get a government job

I’m a single woman with a degree in medical assisting/clinical and I’ve done well with mines. I went behind the scenes in 2010 instead of working in a clinical setting and I make decent money as a patient navigator remote and as a care advocate remote and I’ve been able to pay off my 12K in student loans and over 60K in total of my debt! Why did factory work for 30 plus years and I finally got out of it I hated life I hated everything about it didn't know what I wanted to do but I always know I like helping people so I started applying for different jobs to help people while on the internet I found an honorary degree from a bike University and Leisure science so I got the degree as a joke and next thing you know I get hired as a bus driver for public transit well guess what I used a tweezer science degree everyday I socialize with people about current events their vacations their homes their Hobbies whatever whatever it is they're doing and I drive them wherever they need to go
Liberal studies - non teaching. Why is this even an option. I feel terrible for wasting my time in school.

I 100% regret my diesel technology degree. I should of went computer science. I would of made over double that money with better benefits plus my body would not be falling apart.

I have a degree in Marketing Communications and going back for Biology (Natural Resources) and only regret my Marketing Degree. Not because of the pay or what have you but because I got into the field and realized that I don't like the culture around it. I'm going back for Biology because that was my original major and calling on my life. I want to go and serve the creatures of the world and the folks that enjoy them as much as I do. I want to make sure everyone's family has a place to recreate and spend time in creation the way God intended it. It's not about the money, or the work, it's entirely about how you feel led to serve. My first degree is paid for and my second one will also be paid for. Get out of debt, stay out of debt, and do the thing you know you're called to do.

I graduated with a degree in communications last year. Weeks before graduation, they asked us if we had job offers and if yes, for how much.
I had one for $150k a year but they assumed it was a typo on my end and recorded it as $50k a year 😂. They called suggesting I continue with a masters so I could be, “more employable”

All college departments need a major diet and downgrade. All of those useless degrees need to be certification and minor programs.
Especially liberal arts/humanties/social science (except law school social work and justice studies majors) business colleges (accounting, operational, technology management, finance and other specialized business majors).
Colleges need to treat social work, psychology, sports/athletics, music, arts and designs, marketing, business, economics,criminal justice, many more general degrees as pre-law, pre-educational/stem/mba graduates, and pre-med school programs. Engineering schools need to start encouraging students to get their FE and PE license. Plus, Science, Tech, and Mathematics need a FE and PE like licensing.
Ken a degree is social work is NOT THE SAME as a degree in sociology.

I'm going to get flack for this. degrees tending towards more favorable jobs to women are losing out here. and trades are winning in some ways, these trades are dominated by men. and women are increasingly frustrated with student loan debt and can't settle down and get married like their great grandparents (and all human generations before!) did. in addition, there's trouble in women's sports. natural law is calling our name. -Lori
Sorry, $300k as a software engineer after going to a no-name online school is not typical. They probably live on one of the coasts and maybe they got a FAANG job.
Psychology is a useless degree as well.
It should be part of med and law school. They need to remove it as a major for undergrad and graduate programs. Just have the students major in psychology or socialogy studies and go to either law or med school licensing program for psych and social undergraduates.
