- In this video, that gets high jacked by Mrs.O., I show you what could be causing the "ticking noise" coming from your 3.6 engine in your Dodge Caravan. It could be your flex plate!? -Enjoy!

The 4 yr old super happy to see her "Minnie" again! She sang songs about the van the whole way home! 🎶🎵🎶 Thank you again so much; truly appreciate everything!
Haha, thank you again for the sweet treats! I am still shaking from the sugar overdose! Enjoy the car and hopefully i do not have to see you again... in a good way 😎But feel free to stop in anytime!

I had one of these come in at the last shop I worked for with a complaint of a knocking noise with the a/c on. 2 different shops (one of which being the dealer) told the customer they had a bad a/c compressor and gave him an estimate for that repair. I verified the complaint but thought the noise didn't sound like any faulty compressor I'd ever heard. Long story short, I pulled that plug you mentioned because I thought it sounded like a flexplate and could see what looked like cracks. Was able to stick a long screwdriver through the whole and move the flexplate in the cracked area for confirmation. Turned out it was still covered due to power train warranty, so we charged the customer for the diagnosis and sent them to the dealer for the repair. Great feeling to catch stuff like that before it goes sideways. Great video sir!
I bet the dealer was not a happy camper. I wonder if the customer could get the dealer to pay for your diagnosis?
@@brainfreeze44131 Good question...and to be honest I'm not sure. Often times if you complain loud enough in those situations they'll give in to make you go away. We sent them to a different dealer than the one they'd originally gone to. More of a drive to go there but we'd been buying parts from them for awhile but because they have much better customer service.
@@gearheadautomotivel.l.c.5476 Back in the day my sister had a Dodge Omni. Well the AC wasn't working, it was out of warranty, and the dealer charged a nice chunk of cash to fix it. What had happened is the AC hoses had worn thru at a clamp. Well I complained at the service desk. Well the service manager came out and gave me a piece of paper with an 800 number on it and had them retrieve the hoses from the dumpster. To make a long story short. They sent her a check for all but compressor oil and Freon. So the squeaky wheel when it's right gets the grease. Oh there was a service bulletin on the hoses wearing at the clamp.
@@brainfreeze44131 Exactly. I definitely understand any business not wanting to pay for something they aren't responsible for. That being said, you'd think a company would want to put out a quality product and stand behind it. As far as I'm concerned, I guarantee my workmanship forever. Parts and labor warranties may expire, but if I were to find that something I've done incorrectly caused a failure, I'd want to make it right. Even when you screw up, people respect you for owning up to it and making it right.
Dude, the Dirty Sanchez reference was hysterical!
2:21 for a sniff!
Wife says: "Every SMA video should include a consultation with Mrs. O."
You’re like the Bob Ross of auto diag
My wife had a 1986 Buick LeSabre. With it idling one day, I heard a clicking noise near the bell housing. Put in drive, noise gone.
Shut off engine, bang on catalytic converter. "Oh, that's the noise! "
Amazing!
THAT flex plate was definitely BAD! Thanks for the tip. Great Video!
I just love the charisma between these two people, you rarely ever see this!! I regularly come to see what Eric’s up to, and when Vanessa happens to make an appearance from time to time, you can hear the playfulness in his voice. love it! I’m the same way. Keep up the good work and I really appreciate what you do for the TH-cam community and the DIY’er.
How to make a perfect video.
1/ Precise and quick Diagnosis
2/ Make fun of Essential Oils
3/ Incorporate the term “Dirty Sanchez”
Well done Sir, well done.
Think that plastic is there to keep the new one from shattering during shipping.😁
So basically my analysis of the video, chrysler dropped the 3.8L OHV V6 for the 3.6L Pentastar, mated it too the same 6 speed auto and were to tight arsed to use a better/re-designed flywheel knowing they have that issue 😂
No suprise there i guess....
I am just going to keep hitting the refresh button to see how many new uploads you will post in a short amount of time. Someone's been busy! Great job
Mrs. O is right about those essential oils too. Spray peppermint oil around the house to keep spiders away. Lavender does help with sleep. :-)
Eric, your Rock Auto magnet collection is epic. I have 22 of them and I thought I was doing good.
just put flex tape on it, it's a flex plate after all
SuperDd40 I'd JB Weld it myself,,
Bro .. got me sold
The happiest day was watching my T&C minivan being towed to the junk yard!!! Glad I bought the extended coverage. I saved so much money.
Gotta say Eric I like where you take us along for the whole repair but understand that can't always happen. Thanks for sharing what you can!
Wanted to say I just ran across your channel and have been going 'back in time' for a few days. You're the most understandable auto mechanic I've come across. I'm just an amateur DIY'er, but you make stuff approachable. Oh, and I appreciate when you own up to pulling a rookie movie or catching yourself in a rookie move. Don't find much humility in the auto repair world these days. Thanks!!!
Appreciate the video man I had a horrible noise in my engine and because your video it led me to check my flex plate my flexplate is got worse cracks in it than the one you showed in your video
A great tip on the fly wheels, never knew that could happen. Also a class act with the family in the video, keep em coming. Very entertaining when Mrs O comes out and asked questions and such.
i diaged a crap engine in a chevy 1500 like this. removed drive belt, see if squeak is still present. pull cover, check for flywheel irregularities. swap engines. verified diag by removing pan on old motor, removed crank and inspect last in line bearing, was chowder-ed right to hell. your videos give me the feeling that im not the only mechanic that isn't just pretending. seems whenever i get a vehicle that has been serviced by someone else, im very suspicious of everything. i have a few lifetime customers. i have since went into machine/assy line builds and diags. but i get enough auto work to moonlight as a mechanic. 10 years as a mechanic, with 99% goofs. ive met only 3 mechanics that have my confidence. im glad to call 2 of them my friends 10 years later. what i have learned from you has enabled me to learn a lot of things i never got into before. i now have a 2ch labscope, and my diags are really good. i get the jist from you then go dive into a book for a bit.
Them Pacifica's always have me chasing electrical problems especially at the TIPM. Thanks for the excellent repair vids and kick butt camera work.
Another great and reliable Chrysler product
You think Chevy and Ford don't have issues with stamped parts cracking?
John Cabot all D3 cars are garbage just good for when they are on warranty.
LOL, on your little Korean comment. spent time in Korea and eventually married one. I know what you mean by over-packaging. They pride themselves on this feature. Shipped a custom embroidered winter coat to family. They used heavy cardboard box, double taped every side, and then put plastic straps with metal clamps on them. Family complained about how long it took to open.
Had a feller come in the store today, he said he was at his wits end. His car had a real bad misfire, would barely run. He had swapped plugs put a whole bunch of gas additive in it. Wanted to know if we could read the check engine light. Code was for a cylinder 3 fuel injector circuit open. Looked under the hood and there was a rats nest right on top of cylinder 3's fuel injector. Golly. That feller wasn't the brightest crayon in the box.
James Cagney comes to mind.
Wait you mean to tell me there shouldn't be a pile of dirt, fur and rat droppings around my fuel injectors? I thought that stuff was for the hamsters to rest when they aren't turning the starter motor for me....
That's a pretty distinctive sound I've heard before. Thanks for the video. You started talking about scented oils and I just about fell out of my chair! PMSL!
Corner cutting manufacturing, that part should never fail. It must irritate you to realize you have to put on the same defective part again.
Kinda of a love hate.... It irritates me if it was my car :)
Thats the upgrade,AKA good steal, not "Chineseium"
I did that to a taxi once.
Kept sounding like a failing water pump, I let it go but gave a dispatcher a ride home & she turned my 'faulty' Chev Caprice in
to the owner/mechanic. He had it apart & found the plate cracked about 350 degrees around. Just an inch or so keeping the
trans & converter linked up. Lol. He was pissed. They really should shot-peen those beauties. : (
Makes him a hero, Ticking noise in engine instantly makes people think engine is shot. but its just a cracked fly wheel.
@@timewa851 Like I said in a comment yesterday, cracked or warped flexplates weren't uncommon on small block chevies.
Eric,
Interesting part failure. You would think that in the 21st century they would have figured out how to manufacture a flexplate. I think they over package it because they dont want it to get cracked on its way across the Pacific.
SMA#1
God bless
Paul
They did figure it out, they just didn't use that knowledge here!
Bean counters be messing with engineering decisions.
It's a shame that quality control has gotten so bad that flexplates are cracking during the life of a vehicle. That should be an item that easily lasts till the car is junked. I'm glad I don't own any Chrysler products. Great video.
I was thinking the same. What a disgrace that they are having failures on a part that has been perfected for almost a century. It unavoidably points to intent. Heck, even Hyundai had a problem where the tube where the throwout bearing slides was made wrong and causes the clutch pedal to jam up. Hyundai corrected it then promptly turned around and discontinued the corrective parts. Really bad showing for a company that's trying to set their place on the map.
@@InsideOfMyOwnMind Well said. My feelings exactly.
The last vehicle I personally know had a cracked flywheel was a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass, and that was in 1998.
Ah the classic Sunday free tip Friday
Austin lol i was thinking the same thing
Very nice video
i love ur channel im self taught and ive been learning for 6 months i know SOME stuff but ur videos really teach me alot and they show me how to do thing the right way ....i domt wanna be known as a half butt mechanic i want my reputation to exceed me
The old 2.2/2.5 Chrysler motors used to do the same them they would spin and cause the vibration. Good times cool find.
Can always "bank" on a Chrysler product to pay your bills! Great call Eric!
Haha i enjoy the interactions you have with mrs o.
I did a job last winter on a F250 that had the whole center broken out, and a few years ago on an Impala. Its not just a Chrysler thing.
Cracked or warped flywheels weren't uncommon on small block chevies during the 70's & 80's.
What was the complaint on the 250? Ticking, knocking noise?
@@THREESHOTBANDIT Broke plum out, wouldnt even crank over. Id say he just ignored it till it wouldnt even start no more!
Yep, I once helped R&R the transmission on an '81 square body farm truck to replace the rear main seal (one piece, newer engine) and trans input seal as fence wire had gotten wrapped up and cut the seals out. Found the flex plate cracked and had to replace it too.
Weather bad, still a great weekend thanks to the vids
Check the alignment dowel holes in the trans bell housing. If they’re damaged you’ll be putting another one in shortly.
Is this "Minnie" i bet she be glad to get her back without the ticking noise...great call Mr Eric O...
It is
She is VERY happy to have Minnie back. 😉
@@julied.3314 Has Eric told you about not over-tightening the oil filter cap so that you avoid the oil cooler failure that is semi common on the Pentastar engine?
Thank you Eric O. Good job. I appreciate your videos.
Cool to see a flex-plate do that, my Flywheel on my 5spd Manual Civic broke into 3 pieces but the bolts held it all in place so just chattered.
Little Koreans wrapping their flywheel tightly. So I am a young teenager when my older brother is tearing apart the cases on a small Japanese motorcycle because we used them for trail riding. I can remember him saying several times, "those little 90lb Japs can sure put these bolts on tight". But we never knew they had a large variety too. One of the Japanese Admirals during the battle of the Marianas was 6' 7".
You've had brand new belts for Mrs O's car for years! LoL
A SMA video is not a SMA video unless there is at least one "WHOA!" :)
Years ago, We had some problems with chrysler products cracking the flex plate. Fix was to put adjustable dowel pins in the block and bolt a dummy case to it for adjustment.
Congrats to SMA YT channel. Looks like your getting about 500 new subs a DAY!!!!
Once you get featured on YT your channel will explode.
Can’t wait till you have a video with a million views then a million subs.
I'm with you Eric O on the vinegar smell...I can't stand it either. Also have breathing issues with some of the candle fume stuff as well. lol Good video keep em coming
I have a 2013 Caravan with 105k. Cant wait for my wife to tell me there is a ticking noise. I can say Oh must be a crack in the flywheel and she will think I'm really smart. Thanks Eric!!!
don't worry; I have had to replace my flexplate TWICE now. once at 80k miles and now at 102k. It's only $1,000 with labor... smh
I've never heard of such a thing as a cracked flywheel, but I've also never seen a stamped sheet-metal flywheel before!
Long version i dont even pull the axles to do these. Great videos keep up the great work!
I've had the flexplate in my 1972 Triumph Dolomite let go twice in the 10 years that I've owned it. It is an engine out job to replace it.
My life is complete! I have heard a "dirty Sanchez" reference on SMA!!!!
Oh I have more where that came form
Smell the glove was my favorite Spinal Tap album
Mrs O is one cool lady. I don’t know - you might deserve her, but it’s gotta be a close call. 😄. Thanks for all the great videos, Eric!
I have a co worker that needs to replace the 2nd flex plate in his Dodge minivan. I wonder if there is another source other than Mopar that would have a more reliable part.
I fixed dozens of these at the dealership. Pays 4.3 hours under warranty, but these are the easiest transmissions Ive ever removed and installed. The cherokee 9 speeds are a whole different story.
Did you check the alignment dowel holes in the trans bell housing for damage?
I had a 73 Chevrolet Nova with 307 V8 and automatic. Replaced the flex plate 4 times in 150,000 miles. First one was at 15,000 miles.
Love the free tips Mr.O
So I have the same problem on my 012 journey, Any torque specs on thos bolts?? Thanks man.
That "dirty sanchez" comment just raised this video rating from G to PG...I like where this video's heading.
What the hell was holding that thing together! Wow. Nice call sir. Thanks Dr. O!
just one side of the 4 sided box :)
Cool. Two vids back to back.
Well done and great pickup. But I'm intrigued. Mr. O, if you were to make a diagnosis and it was wrong, do you wear the cost and not charge for the parts and labour? Where I live, if the diagnosis is wrong it's a case of, "well it was an educated guess, we got it wrong but it will still be on the bill + labour and congrats you now have some new bits that weren't broken and that's just the way it goes...". Or, " yeah we had to replace all that stuff to fix the problem". I'm a 60 yr old in the electronics/system industry and your fault diagnosis and techniques are professional and impeccable. Well done too on the "al-you-minium" and "spanners".....
Blue loctite dirty Sanchez. I gotta remember that for tomorrow. So gonna get my coworker.
A number of cars have issues with failure of parts in service. But very few manufacturers redesign those parts to prevent future failures.
Good tip I heard a clicking noise when checking for leaks after my last oil change, mine is still under warranty so I'll let the dealer check it out.
Keep it up buddy, keep it up - keep pushing Mrs. O's buttons till the next ticking noise you hear will be her winding up her arm to clobber you! 😜
Thanks as always for the daily tip and for my almost daily fix of free buffoonery to help my day to chug along down the road of life. 😂😁
Got snow yet ⛄❄️🌨️⛄❄️ there in Newyorkistan captain?
I sure don't miss the no floors cars I used to own in a time long long ago in the land now far far away, 🤔😕
I used to have one of those vehicles, it's fine in the summer, but not good for winter.
Love it! My wife has an essential oil for every ache😜
That’s an awesome catch!
I would have liked to see the process of getting the transmission out.
2:12 -- Mrs. O makes an appearance on screen. Always welcome. Love ya, Mrs. O !
I can't believe that a flywheel would crack. Lose a couple of teeth? Yes. But crack?!
That is so funny. My wife does the essential oils also. There are some of those things that will gag a maggot.
Spitting these vidjayo's out like chiclets!! Have you got Mrs. O and da childrens editing in a dark room all hours of the night?? Or a new service?? Paintings, ice cream, cigs, and now " video editing" available at the drive thru window!! An EMPIRE is born!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What's up with the jeep???
Jeep has been sitting for months, just need to have a bit of time to finish it this winter :)
The Keanu accent always gets me
Saw this happen in a customer Volkswagen Routan. It was really a clunking banging noise by the time the customer drove it in. Rather than wait a week for VW to get the part, I called the local Dodge dealer who had one by the next morning. If I remember right there was a large enough inspection port in the bellhousing to be able to see that exact same crack.
I laughed when she said you freak out about those stinky candles. I hate those things too, they reek to high heaven and set off people's asthma. They're way worse than any garage smells, except maybe gear oil.
Free tip Friday "Don't buy a Chrysler minivan"
If you do, get the flywheel replaced xD
Seriously though, from 1987 up till about 2000 between my parents and one uncle there were 3 Voyagers/Caravans bought. One by my parents (all of these new BTW) that developed engine issues 5 years after purchase, eventually getting a total of 3 engines put in it, 2 reman; one of which wasn't "under warranty" for some retarded reason. This one LOVED to vaporlock on you if you drove it less than 30 minutes. They eventually sold it to someone out of disgust for the thing, never wanting to see it again.
My uncle had a cracked flexplate (this video triggered the memory), damaged wiring harness out of the factory and a sloppy shifter after about 2 years of normal use. He got tired of having to fix the thing, so it sold it and bought a new one, which had problems of it's own, automatic door locks went wonky, something was eating the battery while it wasn't being used, ate CV joints like they were snacks, and a few other things I'm probably not remembering.
Yes, I have grown to have a hatred of these things.
Don't buy a Fiat Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram whatever other shit brands they own now any vehicle & you'll be safe
I owned a Plymouth Horizon from 1990 as my first vehicle, that one alone was enough to make me never want to have anything to do with Chrysler ever again. Didn't stop the relatives though from bugging me to fix their Chrysler Sh**heaps
@@Pantherman1979 I had two of those beast and both company cars leased out of Chicago, I'm in Ohio. Lemon law was not in play since they were lease out of state. The 93 shit a trans at 29k and dumped at 70k. Which brings up the 95 beast, 6 trans valve packs starting at 8500 miles, would drop into 'limp gear' at anytime!. They finally changed the trans cpu after I blocked their entrance and walked away! At 30k, 1 1/2 yrs later, it started again but only if the outside temp was greater than 70. I would pull the trans cpu fuse wait 5mins and replace. Needless to say I never took it on vacation, and never rode in ANY Dodge van again.
Any car that makes me walk can ESAD.
“...the little Koreans...” funniest part of this whole video! I picture a shop of Korean midgets shrink wrapping flex plates in clear titanium wrap specially produced for American mechanics.
no one can challenge you
lord bless you
Nice call. I used essential oils for a while. They are expensive but the one for headaches actually worked. At least that's what I told myself...because it was expensive. :)
Vanessa thinks they can cure anything... I mean anything !
My first company car was an 86 impala 305. At 12,600 the trans started ticking, bad flex plate. Every 6k after (1/2 month of driving) it would repeat. Company put on 5 or 6 flex plates before they decided it was something other than the plates, (trans-engine alignment?) I had over $2k of rental car expense!! Finally they removed the sbox from service!! I did like that big ole car tho.
"Stuff you hippies use". LOL! Thanks for a solid Sunday laugh, Mr & Mrs O!
Great video. What a pain for the customer. They think they are buying a nice minivan only to shell out money on poorly made parts. My grad fathers flywheel did not do that.
That was very interesting I'll have to remember that if i ever hear someone complaining about a ticking noise
That shatters my belief that FCA has improved on their reliability.
I'm gonna start calling Essential Oils Hippie Juice from now on.
That's what I call the stuff.... smells like they fell in a herb garden and forgot to shower
I bought some peppermint, but only because I heard spraying around the house would keep ants out.
@@SouthMainAuto I call it the Vodoo! sounds just like me and my wife lol
A few months ago I replaced a flywheel on a 2015 3.6 caravan with about 60k on it for the exact same reason. Sounded like a bad top end rattle but was coming from the bottom end, was able to see the crack with a mirror before I pulled the tans. I wouldn't call it a super common issue though, cause that van belongs to a delivery company that has over 30 2013 and newer Caravans with anywhere from 0 to 285,000 plus miles, and we've only replaced 1 flywheel. So far at least.
Eric O., in the know!
Great video buddy. Say I have an 08 caravan 3.8 L
Does the same thing. Approximately what does it cost to have one replaced?
So how do you know it’s a flex plate vs a rocker arm? I have ticking that I thought was 100% a rocker arm but after watching this video I’m not sure any longer. When I heard the ticking and it was real loud from under the truck (Grand Cherokee) but also on the drivers side head. Is there a distinct difference in sound from the two?
When I rebuilt my Olds Small block 403, I kept cracking Pioneer stock flexplates.
I solved the problem by buying an SFI Approved Flexplate.
GREAT VIDEO ,WITH GUEST APPEARANCE OF MRS,O JUST NEED BIG NASTY AND SOME BRAKE CLEAN TO BE PERFECT
Be careful, some of the 62te's had misdrilled bellhousings and are the reason the flexplates break on the 3.6, it is the dowel holes in the bellhousing that do not line up the trans properly to the engine
Any particular way to reinstall the torque converter? Just replaced a flexplate and now the motor is extremely hard to turn over. Took back apart 3 times to try and figure it out and haven't yet. Confirmed that the flexplate is installed correctly. Otherwise, stumped. Thanks in advance.
I love your videos! Very helpfull for me to understand and do some work at home. I have a issue with my saab 9-5 from 2001. It has code p1110 and i have changed air bypass valve, all vacuum hoses and sprayed starter fluid around hoses but no effect. Throws code anyway, what would you do now?
Greetings from cold Sweden!
That reminds me of the small block chevy days, a common occurance.
I’m surprised at how popular Patchouli oil is .. centuries old .. don’t use it myself, but if you smell that just once when someone tells you what it is .. you never forget it.
Great catch on the cracked flyw! You've seen/heard that before...? Like the two of you bantering. LOL
The best tech always gives the wifey a little whiffey of everything that comes across his nose.
Bought a car from dealer, 2011 Nissan xtrail with the BIG 2.0 dci 4 banger . It’s a 4x4( compact) test drove it best I could with traffic, bought it, picked it up next day. Got it on the motorway and it vibrates..... but here the thing is sort os pulses or (fades in and out ) very subtle at 40mph most notice able at 60 and is still there beyond that regardless of revs or if in or out of gear. Got all 4 tyres balanced but no luck so it’s back with the dealer and I’ve got the “Loaner”, want to keep it as it’s really clean and full dealer service. Just wounded as It’s a strange symptom it might point to something.
Great video eric o
