This video brings us to the end of the current run of Bouldering When Older videos. If you'd like to see more videos like this, hit the like button to let me know ;) Since recording this video I've now managed to send a different, fairly soft v5. It turns out you'll have more success sending them if you actually try them!
Love this! I'm 40 and started about a year ago. Am projecting my first V5 now, tried it when someone asked about it and got further than I thought! (it's a soft one, but hey, we have to start somewhere;))
hey i loved finding this video as another v3 climber. theres not a lot of content for us out here, everything is about incredible climbers doing incredible things. Im excited to check out more of your stuff and hope you put out more!
Love videos like this to help us lower classes learn to climb harder climbs. I normally give up on these after a little bit just due to getting stuck and not knowing what to do or if I'm just not strong enough yet.
One thing I’ve started to realise is just how much projecting you have to do for v4-5’s compared to the lower grades where you’d expect to send it within a couple of go’s if you’re going to. Changing my expectations on the higher grades has really helped me progress on some of them (though I still haven’t sent them!)
Your videos are such a delight and so applicable to the older climber. I too have been moving into grades that I know I'm unlikely to finish and I learn a tremendous amount from these attempts.
You might have noticed this when editing but one of the main differences is how the routesetter keeps his hips closer to the wall at multiple points (stepping higher into the start position then squeezing into frog position, using different foot positions middle of the route etc) making the moves easier for him.
I did notice this, I could see it at the time but wasn’t easy to do. You’re absolutely right though, having the correct positioning makes it so much easier. As I improved my positioning I got further each time but it was still very tough!
As an older climber, I've found that strength training using compound exercises like squats and deadlifts helps me to better handle falling and jumping off boulders. I still try to minimize falling. Great video! I liked how you worked through the problem with the setter.
I love the learning and light hearted mentality you bring to the scene! Really awesome to see this kind of content edited so nicely, and congrats on working into that V5 🎉
Please do. I am often climbing at the Castle on the weekends with some friends, so if you ever fancied trying some rope climbing feel free to get in touch. Might make a nice video for your channel too.@@OnTheCrux

She was very articulate with her thought process which was cool to see how someone at that level thinks as compared to the route setter. Awesome video
Thanks, I try to think things through but I don’t always get it right!

I’ve thought about doing more strength training, but I hadn’t thought about doing them to help jumping off, that’s interesting thanks!

Really nice climbing! Although I'm quite a bit taller, (probably) stronger and 30 years of age, I would struggle on this
