According to Alzheimer's research UK, over 50% of everyone listening to this podcast will be affected by dementia by either contracting the disease ourselves, caring for somebody with the disease or both.
Dementia is due to impact 130 million people globally by 2050, and today it is the biggest killer in the UK. But we have no effective treatments, it’s diagnosed late in the disease process and prevention is hardly mentioned.
Today I’m joined by Dr Louisa Nicola who has been studying this disease throughout her career and is currently completing her Doctorate with the University of Washington focused on Alzheimer's. She also runs a human performance clinic, Neuro Athletics, where the goal is to prevent and delay dementia as well as advise on what activities we can do today to keep our brains sharp.
We’ll talk through brain boosting exercises and the reasons why certain exercises are good, plus the nutrients we need to feed ourselves to support our neurological needs.
You’ll get an idea of the routines, habits and practices that are not only necessary for elite athletes to optimise performance, but also for us if we want to do our best to avoid dementia.
I’ll also get Dr Louisa’s thoughts on protein, as well as omega 3, electrolytes and creatine supplements.

What a brilliant vlog. I am 73 years of age and feeling about 30. Today, like many days of the week I went for a 15km high altitude mountain walk. Feeling very fortunate to live in the Pyrenees.
So so important to have exercise.
Besides having nutritional food from your cookbooks, I feel fresh, healthy and young.
May it last forever !
Thank you for your excellent postings.
👏💐💝
As a 76 yr old, I am just thinking of my spine, my hips and my knees when it comes to resistance 🤨 A very interesting video Thanks
The zone 2 recommendation from Lousia is so contradicting with Dr.Stacey Sim. Who should I listen to? Confused!!!!
38:56 I m 35, Yesterday I did 3.8Kms, and felt my brain was working better than before . Somehow exercise enhances brain working capacity and then omega 3 ,
Loving her energy

Are all these points valid for early onset Alzheimer's disease which is genetically driven? I've been listening to a lot of your videos and we have this risk in the family. Does the lifestyle and dietary changes have impact on someone who has a gene that makes them almost certain to have Alzheimer's, particularly early onset?
Genetics are important but not as powerful as environment, including all the changes we can make in terms of lifestyle like foods, exercise, using our brains well, etc. Best wishes
I’m 73 I do walking and some interval running. But the 4x4 Come on
Walking is great. My father walked 10mins there and back to his mosque , 5 times a day and at 80 the doctors said his fitness level was outstanding compared to people half his age despite having a bit of a tummy from enjoying too much food. Never underestimate the power of walking.
If yoú Can walk!
Excellent & informative. Thank you 👍
There needs to be more work done on finding the connections between brain damage and narcisstic abuse and physical domestic violence please
No more elephants in the room 🙏
Lack sleep. Spouse with parkinson. Waking me too many times
That is so stressful. Hope you’re getting support.
Strange recommendation to have more sodium. The general population consume too much (more than twice the RDA). What do you think, Dr.Rupy?
I loved this. As a care giver i worked with so many with autimerzers
But you can't spell alzheimers?
As a patient, many of my carers had dyslexia.
@@Beelzebubba1983 crooked fingers hit wrong keys lol
is it safe to eat selenium every day? how many?
Eat one Brazil nut per day. They are loaded with selenium 👍
Is dementia and alziemers related to narcissistic abuse? Missing piece of the puzzle no one gaf about
Fix what .. who are you ? Where’s my soup
Sounds like soccer is a sport for total health
