Welcome to the ultimate test 🔎of the ULANZI U-Mic AM18 wireless for only $99 🔉 . Too good to be true? I will find out, here you can get my honest opinion and my personal impressions of this budget mic. I'll test it against a lot of other mics, like the Rode Video Micro Gen1, Sony ECM-B10, The GoPro 10 Hero Black Media Mod Mic, the internal Mic of the Sony A7IV, and much more. Ah, and I'll also fly my drone 🛸 and use it for my audio comments. I hope you enjoy my video 🤩 and it helps . Maybe the ULANZI U-Mic AM18 wireless is the best bang for the buck? What do you think? Just comment, and let's talk about it! 👇
Hi I've been facing challenges with environmental noise in my audio recordings with POP filters. I'm using a similar microphone to the one you mentioned in your video. Do you have any tips or strategies for reducing background noise? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
@@voyagerrafiq hi, basically i really try to avoid recording in loud places; if i have no choice you can try it with davincis post noise reduction as I do, unfortunately I think this is only possible in the payed, studio version but i will double check it when I am at home
This is one of the best demo videos of the Ulanzi AM U-Mic. I recently bought this mic but have not had the chance to extensively test it as you have in this video. I think it does sound pretty good for what it is and the wind muff certainly helps when outdoors. It did sound a little muffled when it was clipped to your t shirt. It seemed much clearer when it was clipped to your coat zipper and was a little lower. I'm sure with a little tweaking in editing it can sound even crisper. I do mostly outdoor hiking camping and kayaking videos so a wireless mic will be best for me. I had a Deity wireless mic last year but lost the transmitter on a hike. It was much more expensive than this one and the U-Mic has two transmitters and the safety track that I like. Thanks for posting this........Take care, Bluefin.
Thank you for your comment, I agree 100%. I also think that the AM18 is definitely worth the money 👍 btw there will be another test soon with a cheap Lavalier Mic connected, because I was curious how this works additionally, so stay tuned and all the best 🤩
OMG!!!! What a comprehensive review, you did every test required🎯. Although i purchased it a couple weeks ago watching your video solidified my purchase 💯 btw you earned my subscription 🙋🏽 road to 1k .
Thank you so much, I will also test an external mic on the transmitter when I have time, thank you so much for your feedback and take care and enjoy your mic 👍
Thank you so much; yes you are right it was, but I love creating videos and doing this as my hobby and I am always so happy when I get feedback like yours 🫶 thank you for watching 🎉
Hi Christian. It was a very good review. What is your setting on Ulanzi receiver? Mono or stereo? What is your gain level? Thanks in advance and congrats. New subscriber here.
Hi thanks for the subscription and thanks for watching. I always record on mono and I set it afterwards in DaVinci resolve to two tracks, because when you use both you have to do it anyways. I used for my recordings when I used the receiver and the transmitter the gain level as it is and on my Sonx A7IV I was around 9 I think; you can always raise or lower it in post though. Hope it helped 👍
Great tests. What surprised me was the radical difference in the sound quality heard briefly when you were testing the wind muff. When you spoke with the mic in front of you, suddenly the high frequencies could be heard much better. In your earlier tests comparing with other mics placed in front of you, it might have been a fairer comparison (or an extra comparison) to have the AM18 in front of you, not under your chin. In that clipped-on location, the mic sounded quite muffled in comparison - as any such mic is likely to sound.
Yes you are right, you checked every detail, I like it 👍. In general I was quite surprised that it sounds that good, it exceeded my expectation tbh. Thanks for watching!
Yes you are right; there is an adapter for your phone so I would say yes, but never tried it because I use it most of the time on my Sony Cam or standalone 🤷♂️
Отличный обзор! Очень всё детально изложено, качественный контент, я был удивлен что на вашем канале так мало подписчиков, желаю развития вашему каналу, удачи и всего самого хорошего! 😉👍
I am always curious how these little devices hold up in the test of time... So seeing this comprehensive review video and getting interested makes me wonder: Is it still working today in september 2024?
@@Elfraty yes it is, you can watch the newest video, the one about the Jet Fan; there I use it also outside; tbh I dropped it several times and it is still working even though I was skeptical too, because it is really light And btw I plan to upgrade because I want 32bit flow, but for normal usage it is sufficient enough
Hi Christian! Thank you for the nice review. Got a question about recording ambient sounds - is that thing able to do so? As an example let's take a train station and approaching (or leaving) train. Or riding a bike and recording the ambient, probably with wind muff. Would those two mic's in stereo be able to record something like that with good quality?
That is a good question, frankly I also thought about it and I would say yes. The quality is for sure not that high, but for train sounds or waterfalls or something like that it should work, but I would use it with a Windmuff as you said; just be careful when you record just on the internal storage; it records pretty low, mean silent; sometimes you have to push it in your editing software to the limit so that you can hear something 🤷♂️ using the transmitter and receiver it should work fine imho.
When the camera has an audio jack 3.5mm yes and you still have the option to run one of the transmitter standalone and sync the audio afterwards as you can see in my other video as well for example the Samsung S24+ video; in this video you have also a lot of examples how it works: th-cam.com/video/k7IMP5o3oww/w-d-xo.htmlsi=YBqQfVSKyXoDTjtr When you want how to sync it I have also made a quick video how to do it recently. Hope it helps and thanks for watching 👍
Which one can you tell me the timestamp? Maybe you mean the predefined from MrAlexTec; I made a DaVinci Tutorial exclusively on Zooming; there I also mention in the end the specific zoom. You also could google and buy pre defined packages on several pages 😅
I'm quite confused with the internal recording feature on the AM18. Is the internal recording feature degrade the audio or just weirdly makes it into mono that you then have to convert into stereo on an editing program?
I can not say if it degrades it, but as you wrote it reduces it to mono and you have to switch it in post to stereo. That is correct. I am using it most of the time standalone, because I want better audio using my phone or GoPro and for that it is good enough.
Yes but not connecting it directly; you have 2 options: a) you use it like I did and record on the internal storage 8GB and sync it in post or use the included usb-c cable to connect the receiver with the iPhone; but then you must attach it somehow 👍
Nice video! thanks for the review, does it support plugging an external microphone to the transmiter so it can turn a mic like the rode video go II to a wireless microphone?
Thank you so much, yes it does you see it on the top during the unboxing scene. There is the mic itself and another one, this if for i.e. a lavalier mic 👍
Hi, frankly I faced this issue using it standalone; connected to the receiver I had no issues even with the standards setting you see in the video, in my newest lavalier mic video I also used it together with the AM18 transmitter and the gain level was higher 🤷♂️ Due to solving, I just put the level way up on DaVinci in post production and also check if it is set to two channels, because it is per standard only mono and coming out of one box 😅
@@christianeggbauer It's driving me crazy lol. On my phone the audio levels are on point but if I use the reviver to let's say my laptop or use the built on recording then it is extremely low. With the dead cat though audio quality is scary good for the price point lol. Without the deadcat I get such bad background noise in low noise environments. Thank you!

Hi, I just bought the original extension cable from Rode: amzn.to/4cbZVCr - it is 3m long and I've been using it for all my videos you see on my channel when I use it for Talking Head recordings. Greetings back from Austria :)
I had no chance to test the Hohem, unfortunately don‘t know how it is, I have chosen then AM18 because of the price and now I keep it because the quality is for my needs really okay 😃
You should do a test with both mics next to each other. The Ulanzi sound muffled and very bassy. Might be the fact that you are not talking straight into it (like you do in the rode) and it's close to your chest and picks up the bass. If it sounds as crappy as it does with favourable conditions (same position as you rode mic), then I wouldn't get this mic, it sounds bad. Also a test against a similar product from a different brand would be great (dji mic 2, rode...).
Thanks for the hint; generally I would use it that way in real life as well. The comparison would be great but I can not buy every mic out there 😄 even though it would be great; maybe another test is incoming with another mic in comparison but I am still in preparation.
Hi, I didn't connect to the iphone 15 pro via USB, I just used the Mic standalone and synced the audio afterwards. Normally it should work with the USB-C cable, but didn't try it out so far...
@@christianeggbauer Hey Christian, Found your video because I am considering buying this Mic for use with primarily my iPhone 15 Pro Max but after scourging the internet I simply cannot find a confirmation if this will work with an iPhone 15 with a USB-C to USB-C direct connection. I have the Ulanzi J12 but with a lightning port and I switched to Iphone 15 from 14 and it doesn't connect to the new iPhone even using the lightning to USB-C adapter. Are you able to do a quick test and see if the receiver will connect with an iPhone 15 via USB-C cable at all since you own both devices?
