Right on. Anyone can sing with all of the synthesizers and technology today. A lot of “artists” lip-synch at concerts, because “they dance a lot.” Lame excuse. Pat Benetar’s voice still gives me chills, and I’ve loved her since I was about 6-7.
Anyone who sings knows how difficult it is to sing this forcefully, and still sound great. Vocally, this is one of the most powerful pop/rock songs ever recorded. You have to see her live in concert to appreciate how strong her voice really is.
her range, timbre, modulation and projection are amazing... it's a hard song to sing well. I like how the verses are in her sultry lower register, then she can just jump so effortlessly up an octave on the choruses. Underrated 80's vocalist...and so tiny and cute back then! Had a big crush as a kid ugh! 😍🎤🎼👍
February 1981. San Diego Sports Arena. My very first ever rock concert. Pat Benatar. She opened with No You Don't and closed with My Clone Sleeps Alone on the third encore. The arena lights came on and the audience refused to leave. From in the back a chant started:"We want Pat!!". In minutes 20,000 people were making this chant. 10 minutes later Pat and her band came back on stage. "Thank you for calling us back to the stage. I don't know any more songs." The only time I saw something like that.
Neil Giraldo has got to be one of the luckiest men alive. He gets to make and perform amazing music with the woman he loves, who happens to be one of the best female singers ever... who is also an amazing person, AND incredibly beautiful, AND seems to be very nearly immune to aging. They must have a truly wonderful life.
Pat trained for awhile to sing opera when young, and I believe her mom sang some opera. Unlike many pop, rock and country stars, Pat can ACTUALLY SING! She sings pushing air up from her diaphragm, has a relaxed throat and resonates like crazy above the neck - sings through her head. That is why she gets such volume, has excellent range and can comfortably sustain notes. She can still do it very well today! Definitely one of the best rock singers, ever. Not in Rock and Roll Hall of Shame!!!
Yes, she was classically trained for opera and has a five octave vocal range. I went to a Benatar Giraldo concert at Paramount Theater in Denver in 2001 or so. She and Neil walked up the aisle near my seat as they were playing this song.
Imagine: Here's a woman who based on talent, smarts, looks and some charisma - let alone good songs and a great band - made it without spoiled "judges" deciding what's good and what isn't.
