      True they did screw him over .Ozzy has said he and Jake never made a personal connection with each other and that Jake tried to take over the musical direction of the band .where he and Rhoads were very connected on just the music but also on a personal level.

    What I thought separated Jake from others is that no one quite sounded like him in his writing style. He was right down the middle balancing great tech skills with alot of raw emotion, but in his fills and licks he always took you to a place unexpected but definitely desired. He left alot of space in his playing too. A perfectly concocted recipe for something memorable...That's for sure. Even with better shredders, alot of his work on BATM still holds close to the top of the heap today. He's a musician's guitar player for sure...Thanks Mr. LEE...Still listening:)

    It's great seeing this compilation of Jake's career. Definitely one of the best guitar players / songwriters of our generation. His solos always fit the songs perfectly. He could be slow and tasteful or rip. Badlands was an incredible band. I saw them several times and got to meet Jake at the Troubodour after their Christmas (Dec 23rd) concert. Talked with him for 20 minutes. At the end of the night he came over and said good-night. Blew me away. We left about 5 minutes later and ran into Jake and his roadie / friend on the way to my car. We chatted some more. Talked about a show I saw him at in NY. Then I moved back to NY to go to college. Jake had formed a new band called Wicked Alliance. Got to see them in a small bar. Planted myself in front of Jake to watch the master at work. In the middle of the set he saw and recognized me. Mouthed "what are you doing here?" After the show, he came over to me and we started talking. First thing he asked was about our meeting in California and what I was doing in NY. Hard to imagine I made that big of an impression on Jake. It definitely made me a happy young man. I listen to all of the music written by Jake. Other influences were Randy, Warren, George, SRV and Kirk. Jake definitely had the biggest impact on my own playing (just for fun) and composing.

If he had managed to find a band that did him justice and stick with them, he could have been a legend. Badlands should have been a supergroup, but they fell apart too soon and he never seemed to recover from that, just disappeared. Invariably, Jake E Lee is awesome, & certainly did his thing live with Ozzy. & Yet Jake had a impossibly tall order to fill with Randy’s shoes as a songwriter, after Randy put the all time high water mark up at the pinnacle peak of Heavy Metal, it’s inarguably a one sided affair. In comparison, Jake on his 2 albums with Ozzy really put up only one single particularly notable Ozzy hit, with his song Bark at the Moon & then played on Phil Soussan’s hit Ozzy song Shot in the Dark, & the rest are all duds. While damn near every single song Randy wrote on his 2 albums with Ozzy went far beyond particularly notable, while music is subjective, be for real, undeniably even Randy’s deeper cuts & B sides like Steal Away the Night & Tonight tower high over Bark at the Moon. Without even mentioning the clearly huge Radio staple-Sport Stadium hype Randy Rhoads mega hit songs that moved far beyond the culture of Heavy Metal, with Crazy Train & Over the Mountian. Unequivocally, Jake E Lee never wrote anything anywhere even close to the level of the songs Mr. Crowley, Revelation Mother Earth, Goodbye to Romance, Diary of a Madman or S.A.T.O…🎸

    Jake e lee is always respectful to the source. He has made Randy's music his own without ever missing the phrasing or licks we expect. Look for a mistake in any of his live work, a true reminder how important practice is with your stage vibe. Plus, I guess some guys just have it. A true inspiration and I find his playing still full of gems.

    Ozzy's material from Blizzard through No More Tears is his classic solo era. He was never the same after his first retirement stint. Those first 6 albums with 3 guitarists all contributing two each brought something new two the table. While I have the Rhoads material as clearly my favorite, I like what Jake did on BATM/TUS and Zakk on NRFTW/NMT. Even though I have Randy as my clear number one, the song Bark at the Moon and its solo stacks up against anything off the first two albums with Rhoads. I liked Zakk before the Viking Biker look, and there is some phenomenal guitar work on the two records, but nothing stacked up to Bark at the Moon imo. Jake and Daisley laid down some magic with that one.

    • @shaunclifton5281
      @shaunclifton5281 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow ! You Nailed it on All points, especially how you and I prefer earlier Zakk. I thought Zakk was just Phenomenal during No Rest For the Wicked and No More Tears. I just Totally lost all interest once he reached the whole SDMF / BLS biker/lumberjack/viking wannabe bullshit. What the hell is his deal with constantly spitting up in the air above Himself ? He became Repulsive, and honestly never sounded as good again. He seems to be one Messed up dude. Jake E Lee is just Awesome ! Absolute magical guitar Wizard. Ozzy says he hated that period, when ironically, the Jake period is my Favorite Ozzy period. I LOVED the Ultimate Sin tour. Years later I would see whatever tour where Ozzy had Joe Holmes on guitar, and I hated it.

    • @perpetualmotion357
      @perpetualmotion357 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shaunclifton5281 I think Holmes was part of the Ozzmosis tour in 96/97. I get what you mean with Zakk and his spitting. There's a pro shot show from 89' in Philly where Zakk is doing the spitting in the air thing like he's trying to catch it again. So he's done that from the beginning. It is kinda sick but looks even worse when he looks like a dirty biker guy.
      I never liked Sharon but there's one thing that I found myself agreeing with her on and that's when she made the statement about Zakk turning Ozzys music into a BLS project, and I was hearing the same thing. After Ozzmosis, Ozzys music started to have these muddy uninspired guitar riffs and the production left a lot to be desired. It sounded like leftover mediocre riffs Zakk didn't use for BLS. I've always said that Ozzy solo sounded the best when he was more hard rock and less metal. Those bright sounding uplifting guitar parts Rhoads and Jake put to tape was just a better fit for him. Stuff like I Don't Know, Flying High Again, BATM, Shot In The Dark etc..just sounded better to my ears. I also agree with you that Zakk sounded great on NRFTW. That's one of my favorite Ozzy albums. Even NMT had some outstanding material looking back and still had Ozzy sounding like rock n roll. He only sounded good doing the darker doom stuff when he was with Sabbath, and I personally think the best Sabbath albums are Vol-4,SBS,Sabotage, where they started to get more progressive and away from the simple doom sound from their first 3.

    • @johnhagan582
      @johnhagan582 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your comment pretty much sums up my thoughts also .I too think Ozzys best all time work is those first two records with Randy Rhoads .this was music that Randy had to come up with from a genre and style he was completely new to .Quiet Riot from the 70s was a pop group that's flamboyance was created in the honor of David Bowie and Mic Ronson so when Randy joined Ozzy he was out of his element in every way finding himself on another Continent having to create Heavy Metal music something he had never liked let alone had any experience with and was probably thinking he was in way over his head when he first sat down with Ozzy and asked "what do you want me to write" probably not having a clue and when Ozzy replied "just be yourself" that was the 3 best words Ozzy could have ever said to Randy cause it let him know that this new bands music was not gonna be like Black Sabbath's and let him draw from his educational perspective to write something completely new and unique .which is exactly what Ozzy wanted .after touring with Van Halen while in Sabbath he wanted to be in more of a Rock guitar oriented band simular to VH rather than the gloom and doom devil type like Sabbath was .and the result of this was what came out on the Blizzard an Diary recordings .this is wat made those 2 records stand out and caught the attention of the Rock fans around the world .and Lee's entry into Ozzys band was different in he was already playing music from that genre and really nailed it with Bark of the Moon .his playing and music was more explosive and hard rock driven than the first two albums and having to fill Rhoads shoes was something that couldn't have been easy by any stretch of the imagination .but he owned it and allowed Ozzy to carry on instead of fading away after Randy's death that could have very well happened had he not got the right guy .and Zach kept it going with his first 2 records. Like you after this Ozzys music wasn't quite the same Ozzy was having personal and health issues .he didn't have Bobs influence and lyrics anymore which was a HUGE part of Ozzy earlier success .Zach was wanting to do his own thing and Ozzy had a revolving door of musicians from this point on and never had anyone to create something special and magical anymore .

      @@johnhagan582 Spot on I think. Randy was an absolutely brilliant composer and still moves me to this very day. Lee was certainly more explosive style-wise and had better stage presence. He really did a great job keeping Ozzy's act together for a while and did an awesome job with Randy's material. As an album, BATM is quite a distant third for me - with the title song the sole exception. And Shot in the Dark was magnificent. But his writing paled to what Randy could create. That said, onstage Jake was brilliant. I actually think most of Lee's solo's were better improvised on stage, unlike Randy who played best after carefully composing and phrasing his solos, like Mr. Crowley. Interesting contrast. But Randy was far better at creating unique, out of the box melodies and fills... like in I Don't Know... you never expect what comes next but when it does it's absolute genius. And truly masterful, epic compositions like the way Diary builds to a dramatic climax. Randy's passion and fire were magical. I rarely felt that way with Jake's studio playing. There are a few moments when he hit it, but then slides into some fast pentatonic thing in a major key and just noodles off. But onstage, it's another story altogether. Never saw such a natural in front of a crowd!
      Anyway... let's not forget about Bob Daisley. He was the glue and catalyst for much of the early music. Thank God he wrote all the lyrics... LOL
      As far as chops are concerned, I always ponder what Randy might have become with another decade to develop once the genre had taken off. And he'd gone back to studying Classical for a while. He'd surely have been influenced by Vai, Satch, Yngwie, Freidman, Gilbert, etc... I could easily have seen him on the G3 tour and collaborating with everyone to create unexpected, brilliant and moving music. It would have been glorious...
