They surely didn't pay him near what he was worth. The Osbornes were known to be greedy . They were paying Randy Rhodes 300 bucks a week, and he put Ozzy back on the map. They're horrible people.
I never heard that about Randy. I know that Randy's estate refused his royalties from song writing and that Sharon collects them to this day. So I think Randy might have made more a little more than $300 a week. That might have been his touring salary. Ozzy wasn't making that much in the beginning. The record company that was making more at the time. I'm not sure but I think it was CBS. They would loan cars to Ozzy and he would sell them to make money. He went to their offices to renegotiate his contract. He had two doves with him. He released one and bit the head off of the other one. And that's a true story unrelated to the bat incident.
@@williamreilly4786 Some refuse the royalty payments because they are insulted that the payment is so low. This happened at a record company I worked for in the 1990. The song writer tore up the check and sent it back to the record company. The record company just cut him a new check.

I knew Jake when he lived in Vegas, he's such a good guy and deserved so much better than he got. He used to come into Sam Ash to get his guitars worked on and we talked all the time. He's truly a good guy and I hope he's doing well.

Didn’t Jake before Ozzy have a band called Running Wild? I saw him perform at a battle of the bands at the Chula Vista public gymnasium/pool. His performance and the band was insane. He pulled off eruption to a T. I didn’t know him personally but I was in awe of Jakes performance and stage presence. When a friend of mine told me about that guy (Jake) making it with Ozzy, I wasn’t surprised. The guy blew me away with his talent.

Rumor has it Kiss paid Mark St. John $50,000 a year in 1984. If that's true, it's a sorry state of affairs when Ozzy makes Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley seem generous by comparison.
Well, I don’t know the structure of their contract but typically in band like if you were a member of Slayer for example, what you’re getting paid it really comes from whatever record company you’re signed to. I know it’s a different genre, but in hip-hop, especially when artist are first starting out, they will bring in a lot of friends to help right and make beats. The problem is if you’re just coming in there on a friend level it’s not the artist who pays you, it’s supposed to be the record label who pays you. Dr. Dre’s first chronic. Dr. Dre had signed a contract with death row/Interscope. Other artists that were also signed to the label who had actual contracts were paid, but then there was three or four people who were just friends, but they didn’t sign a contract. The album goes on to sell 7 million copies and those three or four people never got a dime and a lot of people were pointing the finger at Dr. Dre. that’s where it gets tricky everyone else that was signed to the label received payment, but they didn’t receive their payment from Dr. Dre they were paid by the label. There’s even times when an artist will bring on another artist either sign him to his label under a parent label or somebody joins a band but you’re typical heavy metal band members aren’t paralegals. They don’t write contracts. I don’t think Ozzy or even Sharon writes legal contracts. Sharon looks over all of his stuff. But in a lot of circumstances, you’re not getting paid by the artist, the artist is waiting for their own money from the label.
If you live long enough, you will see karma and it will visit those like Sharon and Ozzy. Thank God George didn't join Ozzy. And Jake is better of without Ozzy. Ozzy is useless now. Jake used to come into my music store in the mid 1990’s in Huntington Beach California. He was a great guy and very humble. He did a lot of business and bought a lot of guitar pedals. He would come back a month later and trade a bunch of them back in and get more, LOL! He is a very under rated player in my opinion and deserves a lot more credit. He told me a story I will share. He was on the Monster’s of Rock tour in the UK or Europe somewhere? He said Ozzy came on, after Gary Moore and Van Halan. He said “I had to follow those two guys”? Can you imagine? The pressure was on. But he said Eddie came up to him after Ozzy’s set and complemented him. He said it meant a lot. The story stayed with me.
Jake did the Wicked Alliance tour in 94 and then his solo album "A Fine Pink Mist" in 96 before he decided to go into semi-retirement. Ive talked to Jake many times and we have had long chats about all of this and I can tell you...He isnt bitter and the last thing he wants is pity or sympathy. He's a solid guy to the core. No BS...just a genuiene guy...he does things on his own terms and doesnt need or want to be in any kind of spotlight. Ive known many artists over the years and Jake is one of the most solid ones Ive known. Most are primadonnas.
Hope Jake is doing well, wherever he lays his head. I am a Jake fan since Ozzy and Bark at the Moon. Followed Badlands 89 to 94. His 96 solo AFPM. He must have retired from that point on to the early 2010s. Red Dragon Cartel came out 😅 and they are not great; save for Jake. But Jake I hope perserves.
Jake E.Lee in a April 2019 interview mentioned that he received $200, plus road touring perks whenever he joined Ozzy. I thought he was worth 10X as much after seeing and hearing his awesome guitar playing. Sharon Osbourne did Jake wrong. God bless Jake for going through the contract. I hope he makes a full recovery from his surgery.

Notice they never have reissued The Ultimate Sin. Probably because they had to give Jake writing credits. None of those songs are on any of the best of albums either.
Phil Soussan is on the naughty list too. I think Sharon tried (or did) punch him at Randy Castillo's funeral over some lawsuit where Phil was trying to get paid for his contributions. Ultimate Sin is my favorite Ozzy album because it's from the era I discovered him.
The issue with Ultimate Sin is with Phil and 'Shot in the Dark". Phil came to Ozzy with the song, and said he wrote it by himself. He didn't. Phil had stolen it from a previous band he was in. You can probably hear the original version here on TH-cam. The other two songwriters knew nothing about this, so when the song was a hit for Ozzy, they were totally blindsided and understandably upset. They got in line to sue Ozzy and Sharon, and clearly the issue is still unresolved.
It is very unfair that exceptional top end guitar players who contributed so much to these records get cheated like this. Without these guitars sales would of folded by literally millons.
One must never forget Sharon Osborne sat at the feet as a young lady watching her Crooked father, Don Arden rip off his act’s left and right. The best example of Don Arden’s thievery is The Small Faces. Don put the band members on a small stipend and provided a house for the band to reside. They also had access to a clothing store. Don toured the living shit out of this band and mopped up financially. The band was paying for their housing, Clothes etc unbeknownst to the lads. Don ripped them off with royalties, the worst ripoff heard of. So nothing surprises me about Sharon being cheap, stingy and untruthful.

Actually, Bob Daisley wrote the lyrics to every song on the first 3 Ozzy solo albums, and about 90% of Ultimate Sin. Randy Rhoads wrote all the music for the first 2. Basically, when Ozzy could come out of his drug & alcohol coma long enough, he would go in the studio and lay down the vocals. Ozzy and sharon are extremely greedy and don't like to share credit where it's due. Geezer Butler wrote all of Black Sabbath's lyrics when ozzy was their singer, but ozzy still gets writing credits.

I grew up in and around the music business in Los Angeles .. with almost every story about the early days of Crue, Poison, Shark Island, GnR, RATT, the swinging doors auditions for Ozzy, the hundreds of cassette tapes, vinyl, beta & even laser disc submissions for the Kiss gig, I was there .. I auditioned for Ozzy .. I knew Randy from before he played with Lita so he was genuinely surprised and happy to see me walk in .. Phil & I still stop and talk for awhile when I see him at NAMM .. I auditioned for Kiss .. Jaine said I was too neoclassical(but they respond when I call so I made a friend I met a LOT of the musician's in ALL these documentaries and I know a LOT of other SCHYTE about what these beloved Rock Stars have done to up & coming brilliant players .. I know PERSONALLY(and still stay in contact with,) musicians that were totally fokked over by these clowns S.O. / W.D. / K.F. and all the other members of the secret little club of hagglers and dream killers. W.D. STILL OWES V.C. a TON of $$ .. but whatever, Joe & the Leppard Familia love Viv and they pay him FAR more than W.D. Could Ever afford to pay him .. Fantastic video. During the pandemic, I stumbled across an interview Jake E Lee did with some podcast. He talked a lot about the Ozzy years, but more so how management screwed over Badlands. He went into details about how the last tour was paid for by themselves and they traveled with all their equipment. Ray's death was a tragedy, and you nailed it how grunge came up out of nowhere. My dad was a failed musician in a band, who never got famous,and was always bitter how grunge just came up out of the blue and the landscape of rock music changed overnight. Many bands were dropped in favor of the hot new thing that was coming out. The story about George Lynch is sad. I had no idea he was nearly in Ozzy's band. Thank you for these stories, they're incredible. Jake was one of my favorite 80s guitar players. The Ultimate Sin has some really good songs, and his guitar playing had more of a blues touch to it that I fell in love with.
The Osbournes did Jake dirty, and it makes you wonder if the same thing happened with Randy because after the Madman tour he wanted to do something else.

As I've read in numerous places, to Randy, Kerslake and Daisley. They wrote the damn album, just to discover Ozzy's name on the cover. See, the whole project was sold to them as a new band, not Ozzy's solo career. They wrote music and lyrics, and Ozzy got his name on the credits and took the songs as his own. Shjady stuff.
Rhoads' mother never officially sued them. Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake DID sue them over their royalties that Sharon was secretly pocketing. If Randy were still alive today, would he still be friends with Ozzy? Who knows
Randy was leaving after the last tour. Nobody in the band wanted to do Black Sabbath tunes for Speak of The Devil. So even if he had lived, Randy was on his way out not being happy with the direction.
Driving in the LAX area back in 89-90' I saw Jake get out of a brown 70's four door (Caprice?) POS and drop his daughter off at a DayCare. I remember thinking "He musta blown all that Big Money or he got stiffed." Sad to hear the truth.
A lot of classic 80's metal bands and musicians are making a bit of a comeback - Cirith Ungol, Saxon, Def Leppard, Sebastian Bach. I reckon if Jake threw his hat in the musical ring again now he'd get a pretty big response! There are a lot of Jake fans still out there who've never forgotten him - I'm one of them. I'd love to see Jake play again.

@@chrisa1125 Remember that Dusk is really just demos, no overdubbing except for the harmonies added years later. Taken for what it is, Some of the song ideas are great and Jake's playing is spot on as usual. Ray by that time was already sick but still belting it out.
Phil Soussan stole the song " Shot in the Dark"... the main riff - chord progression was written by John Sloman (ex Uriah Heep/Gary Moore lead singer) who briefly had Soussan working on a possible band project a year or so before Soussan went to Ozzy... he nicked the song from Sloman and presented it as his own... Sloman did not have the financial ability to seek legal action against Soussan during those years, knowing that the Osbournes would try and prevent loss of royalties... the music business...
@Kar's Guitar Channel Thanks for using my info about melody & lyrics being 50% of the song. It's so heartbreaking that to this very day a lot of musicians don't know about this. Especially if the vocalist wrote all the melodies and lyrics along with some of the music. That starts getting into that singer getting up to 60%-70%. Leaving the rest to be split up between those who wrote the rest of the music. In many cases 30% gets split up between the guitarist, keyboardist and bassist, and the drummer left out of it all. Usually speaking that is. Many guys who first start out don't get the ultimate deal to begin with. Usually no one does. They have to earn it. Unfortunately in cases like this, once they earn it, the powers that be still have leverage over them and can still screw them out of what they earned and deserve. Even with a contract! Most of the powers that be, know that the amount paid out to lawyers will nearly always exceed the amount they are going after, as the lawyers for the powers that be can drag it out utilizing technicality after technicality! I know this cause my music was stolen for a 2020 Super Bowl ad. Took 3 years of fighting it and had to settle for way less cause of the Supreme Court hadn't ruled on a technicality called the "Discovery Rule". Had they ruled in favor of that, my case would've been able to go back further than the statute of limitations to the moment the copyright infringement actually first occurred and not when it was first discovered years later!! Anyways ...thanks....it's nice to know that I can be somewhat helpful here!!
Ultimate Sin is one of the greatest guitar albums of all time . Thank you Jake. You made an guitar lover for life. Bark and Ultimate are the only Ozzy albums I listen to.

I loved Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen was a childhood hero of mine. Came across a few stories over the years about how Eddie screwed a few people. Namely Michael Sobeleski. (Michael Anthony). Forcing him to sign over his rights to the Van Halen name. Essentially making him nothing more than a contract musician. Michael was a critical part in building Van Halen. He deserved to be a part of the Van Halen name. Broke my heart. My childhood obsession with Van Halen ended right there
Jake was Ozzy's best and brightest IMHO. Jake almost singlehandedly started that "Tricky" L.A. Metal Guitar Style. He never gets the credit he deserves. Imagine the pressure he was under coming in after Randy. He did it with Style and Grace. Not to mention GUSTO! Most importantly he wasn't trying to be a Clone. Watch videos of that first Tour...Jakey was VICIOUS!!! Kudos Jake!!!
Thanks for the informative video, consider me a new subscriber! My first exposure to Jake was seeing a satellite dish TV broadcast (MTV, Showtime, or HBO maybe?) of Ozzy's performance at the 1983 US Festival. For anyone unfamiliar I can *absolutely* recommend checking this out -- there are TH-cam clips of Ozzy and bunch of other killer bands and artists who performed at this multi-day outdoor event. I was immediately drawn to Jake's obvious talent, over the top guitar licks, and stage presence; he had such a knack for performing live. Anyhow, there was of course no internet back then so I had to find a copy of Metal Edge or Hit Parader that provided some Ozzy coverage to even find out who Jake was. Later, once I'd saved up enough money, I immediately went to my local record store to pick up a Bark at the Moon cassette. I played it until it broke and bought a replacement copy. Such fond memories of that era, I sometimes wish I could go back. Lastly, I hope there is a special place in hell for the Osbournes and others like them who believe it is okay to take advantage of and treat others so unfairly. Jake is so underrated, in my opinion, and deserves much more recognition and compensation for his talents.
This is a reoccurring story we keep hearing from the other musicians who played with Ozzy. Ozzy and Sharon are slimy little people who notoriously used the talents of others without the generosity and respect you’d expect from so much success. Shame on you both.
Jake E Lee really deserves more recognition and acclaim. The guy replaced Randy Rhoads which was a pivotal moment in Ozzy's career. The wrong guitar player at that time would have killed his future. Jake E Lee not only worked perfectly, he brought great song writing. He also basically wrote The Ultimate Sin and was never really given the full credit he deserved. Amazing player, amazing song writer.
Because Lee wrote it and made sure he tied his legal knots nice and tight, they won't reissue it for sale. Just to fk him out of his due. That's some shitbag stuff right there.
According to Vinny, they only jammed a few times with Jake. Ronnie wanted a European style player and that is accurate about Jake's style was more dynamic than what Ronnie wanted as it walked on his vocals a bit too much. To me Jake is the best metal axeman from that era ! Vinny is one of the classiest legends I have ever met along with Jake.
Met Jake outside the coliseum in Portland Oregon in 1984 when Motley opend for them. Jake happened to be having a smoke out back about an hour and a half before the show started and got to talk to him a bit and he gave me a pick. I said hey Jake Williams.... he said ya, how did you know" Told him I had read in hit parader or circus (can't remember which) and that he was only getting 500 a week and thats it, he said yea but I'm supposed to get a bunch of royalties next record so it will all work out, Down to earth super mellow cool guy. Didn't act better than or stuck up at all considering he easily could have been. Crue was horrible as Ozzys crew was dumping flour on their heads from up above during their set.
It’s strange considering how all Metal guitarists in the 80’s thought playing with Ozzy was the Ultimate Dream Job. Jake was a world famous, certified Rock Star. Few ever get to live that life yet clearly Ozzy criminally underpaid his hired talent. Years later, a drummer friend I know briefly worked with Jake in Las Vegas where he was residing. It didn’t make sense to me that a RockStar would be working with a nobody drummer but even the greats fall really far sometimes.
I remember distinctly reading an interview with him in Guitar World magazine, where he stated he made as much as a cocktail waitress makes. $100 a week.

BTW, my friend Tina got aids from Ray. Her family waa not in the settlement and according to what I know as a paralegal...there was a deal cut with some of the famalies of the ladies Ray essentially killed. What I heard, not saying it is 100% true, but one of the deals in the settlement was Badlands cd's cannot be remasteted, re-relessed and if they were those famalies get most or all of the money made from them. Again not saying this is fact, but I heard this from 3 different sources and 2 of them were lawyers I know and trust.
@@Debra-k1f Make copies of your Badlands stuff. I made about 4 copies of my CD's and don't play the originals. In fact not everything out there has been remastered or reprinted. So say for example my Bonham cd, Cry Wolf, Faith or Fear, etc...make copies and do not listen to the original. I have seen certain CD's go for CRAZY...CRAZY money. I will always be upset with myself for giving my GF ...dearest love of my life for eternity the Badlands group photo shirt I got when I saw them at the Spectrum 1989...gave it to her and she cut it up sexy style or how I term my cut up shirts "Strutt Slut Cut'" (I am a Blondie bombshell old school metal Transgurl now as my vids show....OMG I wish I had that shirt. I saw it on eBay for $350. So.....do what ya gotta do to preserve your music!!!
Yes, I believe the record company agreed on a settlement to never publish Badlands music again in any format. That’s why it cannot be found in streaming services. I still have the two CDs. I ripped the Voodoo Highway CD into MP3 but I should make a backup along with the first album.
Badlands was such a killer band! It's a shame that Jake had so much tragedy at that time in his life. Killer guitarist and musician, he absolutely deserves better.

Seeing how poorly Ozzy and Sharon treated their band members, it’s pretty hard to feel bad for whatever ailments or unfortunate circumstances that may befall them.
I worked for the local promoter doing hospitality for bands and crew on the early 1980, and worked the Ozzy - Bark at the Moon show with Motley Crue supporting. At the time, i didnt realize what an important historical moment I experienced.
jake is awesome and such an underrated guitar hero. and of course, bark at the moon was one of the greatest of all time - and nobody could replace jake ( and never has ).
I'm more curious about Randy Castillo. He's credited as a songwriter on almost all the songs on No Rest for the Wicked and No More Tears but it's not clear to me what role he played in the process.
Jake E Lee is one of the most Underrated Guitar Players not only in Heavy Metal but in music in general. Like with Randy Rhoads Jake was the "missing" link that Ozzy and Sharon so much needed for Ozzy being the Great Ozzy Osbourne again. Sharon was a Blessing for Ozzy career success but She was/is a real Mean and Ruthtless person that don't have the slightest problem in finnish with someone's career and in a Cruel way.
Jake E Lee was one of the few famous Koreans in western music media at the time His family is Zainichi Korean/Japanese born Korean I think if Jake was treated better he would help be a better role model for Korean and Asian representation in American/Western media And a great role model for countless aspiring Asian musicianss
It's a real shame the way Jake was treated in the days with ozzy. One positive is his signature guitars with charvel and his signature amplifiers with Friedman but I doubt if sales on those products have put a whole lot in his pocket. I saw Jake in 1989 with Badlands, wow what a show that was!! He's very talented.

when i was kid in a touring band we played Bark at the Moon and Killer of Giants. we always thought Jake E Lee was the man, I mean he was playing with Ozzy. the highest plateau possible, the pinnacle of guitarist, set for life. I would have never imagined later in life he'd be struggling. I have both Badland "albums" and the guitar tab book for the first album. I can't fathom being as good as him and be struggling in the end. I toured for 5 years and packed it in at 25yrs old, got a real job and settled down. maybe I did make the right choice.
Just a bit about 'shot in the dark' i heard a demo of that before Phil Joined Ozzy..He was in a band called FM here in the uk with Chris and Steve Overland who were and are friends of mine. If i remember correctly, that was part of the deal that took him to ozzys band
Jake was in Motley Crue? I never heard that one. I heard about Jake maybe replacing Mick at one point but not playing in Crue for a short stint prior to playing with Ozzy.
The ironic fact here is that most of the contracts, if not ALL OF THEM, contain a statement at the end which reads "I declare that I am not signing this agreement UNDER ANY DURESS OR COERCION", I am pretty sure Jake's contract had it too...
Which is exactly how Sharon got him to sign. Threatening him. He could have disputed the contract in court. He could have won. However, the Ozzy's wallet is much fatter, and they would have fought Jake long and hard.

His signiture guitar is still in production for Jackson Guitars i believe, its the longest running signiture guiyar in their catalogue, he'll get a few bucks from those as well.
Jake was the only person that enjoyed touring because of all the traveling . The other members of the band were already used to it and weren't as enthusiastic . Its sad they fukked him over . Hes the only guitarist that didn't do any trash talking of the Osbournes or say anything negative in a guitar magazine interview .

Jake was big time Roughcut and they were bad ass and he was the only guitarist in the band at that time. Dave Alford on drums, well it was like hearing Jake with John Bonham. They had a great keyboardist too. Paul Shortino singing. I'm telling you they were the real deal, not posers like Ratt and Crue and later renditions of Roughcut..

I never heard that about Randy. I know that Randy's estate refused his royalties from song writing and that Sharon collects them to this day. So I think Randy might have made more a little more than $300 a week. That might have been his touring salary. Ozzy wasn't making that much in the beginning. The record company that was making more at the time. I'm not sure but I think it was CBS. They would loan cars to Ozzy and he would sell them to make money. He went to their offices to renegotiate his contract. He had two doves with him. He released one and bit the head off of the other one. And that's a true story unrelated to the bat incident.

I knew Jake when he lived in Vegas, he's such a good guy and deserved so much better than he got. He used to come into Sam Ash to get his guitars worked on and we talked all the time. He's truly a good guy and I hope he's doing well.

Didn’t Jake before Ozzy have a band called Running Wild? I saw him perform at a battle of the bands at the Chula Vista public gymnasium/pool. His performance and the band was insane. He pulled off eruption to a T. I didn’t know him personally but I was in awe of Jakes performance and stage presence. When a friend of mine told me about that guy (Jake) making it with Ozzy, I wasn’t surprised. The guy blew me away with his talent.

Well, I don’t know the structure of their contract but typically in band like if you were a member of Slayer for example, what you’re getting paid it really comes from whatever record company you’re signed to. I know it’s a different genre, but in hip-hop, especially when artist are first starting out, they will bring in a lot of friends to help right and make beats. The problem is if you’re just coming in there on a friend level it’s not the artist who pays you, it’s supposed to be the record label who pays you. Dr. Dre’s first chronic. Dr. Dre had signed a contract with death row/Interscope. Other artists that were also signed to the label who had actual contracts were paid, but then there was three or four people who were just friends, but they didn’t sign a contract. The album goes on to sell 7 million copies and those three or four people never got a dime and a lot of people were pointing the finger at Dr. Dre. that’s where it gets tricky everyone else that was signed to the label received payment, but they didn’t receive their payment from Dr. Dre they were paid by the label.
There’s even times when an artist will bring on another artist either sign him to his label under a parent label or somebody joins a band but you’re typical heavy metal band members aren’t paralegals. They don’t write contracts. I don’t think Ozzy or even Sharon writes legal contracts. Sharon looks over all of his stuff. But in a lot of circumstances, you’re not getting paid by the artist, the artist is waiting for their own money from the label.

Jake used to come into my music store in the mid 1990’s in Huntington Beach California. He was a great guy and very humble. He did a lot of business and bought a lot of guitar pedals. He would come back a month later and trade a bunch of them back in and get more, LOL! He is a very under rated player in my opinion and deserves a lot more credit. He told me a story I will share. He was on the Monster’s of Rock tour in the UK or Europe somewhere? He said Ozzy came on, after Gary Moore and Van Halan. He said “I had to follow those two guys”? Can you imagine? The pressure was on. But he said Eddie came up to him after Ozzy’s set and complemented him. He said it meant a lot. The story stayed with me.

Jake did the Wicked Alliance tour in 94 and then his solo album "A Fine Pink Mist" in 96 before he decided to go into semi-retirement. Ive talked to Jake many times and we have had long chats about all of this and I can tell you...He isnt bitter and the last thing he wants is pity or sympathy. He's a solid guy to the core. No BS...just a genuiene guy...he does things on his own terms and doesnt need or want to be in any kind of spotlight. Ive known many artists over the years and Jake is one of the most solid ones Ive known. Most are primadonnas.

Hope Jake is doing well, wherever he lays his head. I am a Jake fan since Ozzy and Bark at the Moon. Followed Badlands 89 to 94. His 96 solo AFPM. He must have retired from that point on to the early 2010s. Red Dragon Cartel came out 😅 and they are not great; save for Jake. But Jake I hope perserves.

Jake E.Lee in a April 2019 interview mentioned that he received $200, plus road touring perks whenever he joined Ozzy. I thought he was worth 10X as much after seeing and hearing his awesome guitar playing. Sharon Osbourne did Jake wrong. God bless Jake for going through the contract. I hope he makes a full recovery from his surgery.

The issue with Ultimate Sin is with Phil and 'Shot in the Dark". Phil came to Ozzy with the song, and said he wrote it by himself. He didn't. Phil had stolen it from a previous band he was in. You can probably hear the original version here on TH-cam.
The other two songwriters knew nothing about this, so when the song was a hit for Ozzy, they were totally blindsided and understandably upset. They got in line to sue Ozzy and Sharon, and clearly the issue is still unresolved.
All these people that have been screwed royally on music publishing should be able to sue the hell out of all the Osborne’s !!

Actually, Bob Daisley wrote the lyrics to every song on the first 3 Ozzy solo albums, and about 90% of Ultimate Sin. Randy Rhoads wrote all the music for the first 2. Basically, when Ozzy could come out of his drug & alcohol coma long enough, he would go in the studio and lay down the vocals. Ozzy and sharon are extremely greedy and don't like to share credit where it's due. Geezer Butler wrote all of Black Sabbath's lyrics when ozzy was their singer, but ozzy still gets writing credits.

Fantastic video. During the pandemic, I stumbled across an interview Jake E Lee did with some podcast. He talked a lot about the Ozzy years, but more so how management screwed over Badlands. He went into details about how the last tour was paid for by themselves and they traveled with all their equipment. Ray's death was a tragedy, and you nailed it how grunge came up out of nowhere. My dad was a failed musician in a band, who never got famous,and was always bitter how grunge just came up out of the blue and the landscape of rock music changed overnight. Many bands were dropped in favor of the hot new thing that was coming out.
The story about George Lynch is sad. I had no idea he was nearly in Ozzy's band. Thank you for these stories, they're incredible. Jake was one of my favorite 80s guitar players. The Ultimate Sin has some really good songs, and his guitar playing had more of a blues touch to it that I fell in love with.

Rhoads' mother never officially sued them. Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake DID sue them over their royalties that Sharon was secretly pocketing. If Randy were still alive today, would he still be friends with Ozzy? Who knows
Randy was leaving after the last tour. Nobody in the band wanted to do Black Sabbath tunes for Speak of The Devil. So even if he had lived, Randy was on his way out not being happy with the direction.

A lot of classic 80's metal bands and musicians are making a bit of a comeback - Cirith Ungol, Saxon, Def Leppard, Sebastian Bach. I reckon if Jake threw his hat in the musical ring again now he'd get a pretty big response! There are a lot of Jake fans still out there who've never forgotten him - I'm one of them. I'd love to see Jake play again.

@@chrisa1125 Remember that Dusk is really just demos, no overdubbing except for the harmonies added years later. Taken for what it is, Some of the song ideas are great and Jake's playing is spot on as usual. Ray by that time was already sick but still belting it out.

Phil Soussan stole the song " Shot in the Dark"... the main riff - chord progression was written by John Sloman (ex Uriah Heep/Gary Moore lead singer) who briefly had Soussan working on a possible band project a year or so before Soussan went to Ozzy... he nicked the song from Sloman and presented it as his own... Sloman did not have the financial ability to seek legal action against Soussan during those years, knowing that the Osbournes would try and prevent loss of royalties... the music business...

It's so heartbreaking that to this very day a lot of musicians don't know about this.
Especially if the vocalist wrote all the melodies and lyrics along with some of the music. That starts getting into that singer getting up to 60%-70%.
Leaving the rest to be split up between those who wrote the rest of the music. In many cases 30% gets split up between the guitarist, keyboardist and bassist, and the drummer left out of it all.
Usually speaking that is.
Many guys who first start out don't get the ultimate deal to begin with. Usually no one does. They have to earn it. Unfortunately in cases like this, once they earn it, the powers that be still have leverage over them and can still screw them out of what they earned and deserve. Even with a contract!
Most of the powers that be, know that the amount paid out to lawyers will nearly always exceed the amount they are going after, as the lawyers for the powers that be can drag it out utilizing technicality after technicality!
I know this cause my music was stolen for a 2020 Super Bowl ad. Took 3 years of fighting it and had to settle for way less cause of the Supreme Court hadn't ruled on a technicality called the "Discovery Rule". Had they ruled in favor of that, my case would've been able to go back further than the statute of limitations to the moment the copyright infringement actually first occurred and not when it was first discovered years later!!

Exactly. After Randy and Jake were gone, the magic was gone too. Ozzy was able to put out a decent hit now and then down the road - but nothing like the old days.
He ripped off everyone. Randy in particular. Jake got ripped off too. Just because people play music we like dosent mean they are good people. Most of the greats are the scum of the earth. Really bad people.
I loved Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen was a childhood hero of mine. Came across a few stories over the years about how Eddie screwed a few people. Namely Michael Sobeleski. (Michael Anthony). Forcing him to sign over his rights to the Van Halen name. Essentially making him nothing more than a contract musician. Michael was a critical part in building Van Halen. He deserved to be a part of the Van Halen name. Broke my heart. My childhood obsession with Van Halen ended right there

Jake was Ozzy's best and brightest IMHO. Jake almost singlehandedly started that "Tricky" L.A. Metal Guitar Style. He never gets the credit he deserves. Imagine the pressure he was under coming in after Randy. He did it with Style and Grace. Not to mention GUSTO! Most importantly he wasn't trying to be a Clone. Watch videos of that first Tour...Jakey was VICIOUS!!! Kudos Jake!!!

My first exposure to Jake was seeing a satellite dish TV broadcast (MTV, Showtime, or HBO maybe?) of Ozzy's performance at the 1983 US Festival. For anyone unfamiliar I can *absolutely* recommend checking this out -- there are TH-cam clips of Ozzy and bunch of other killer bands and artists who performed at this multi-day outdoor event. I was immediately drawn to Jake's obvious talent, over the top guitar licks, and stage presence; he had such a knack for performing live. Anyhow, there was of course no internet back then so I had to find a copy of Metal Edge or Hit Parader that provided some Ozzy coverage to even find out who Jake was. Later, once I'd saved up enough money, I immediately went to my local record store to pick up a Bark at the Moon cassette. I played it until it broke and bought a replacement copy. Such fond memories of that era, I sometimes wish I could go back.
Lastly, I hope there is a special place in hell for the Osbournes and others like them who believe it is okay to take advantage of and treat others so unfairly. Jake is so underrated, in my opinion, and deserves much more recognition and compensation for his talents.

This is a reoccurring story we keep hearing from the other musicians who played with Ozzy. Ozzy and Sharon are slimy little people who notoriously used the talents of others without the generosity and respect you’d expect from so much success. Shame on you both.
Jake E Lee really deserves more recognition and acclaim. The guy replaced Randy Rhoads which was a pivotal moment in Ozzy's career. The wrong guitar player at that time would have killed his future. Jake E Lee not only worked perfectly, he brought great song writing. He also basically wrote The Ultimate Sin and was never really given the full credit he deserved. Amazing player, amazing song writer.
Because Lee wrote it and made sure he tied his legal knots nice and tight, they won't reissue it for sale. Just to fk him out of his due. That's some shitbag stuff right there.

According to Vinny, they only jammed a few times with Jake. Ronnie wanted a European style player and that is accurate about Jake's style was more dynamic than what Ronnie wanted as it walked on his vocals a bit too much. To me Jake is the best metal axeman from that era ! Vinny is one of the classiest legends I have ever met along with Jake.
I could be wrong, but I remember reading that Randy Rhoads was making $250/week with Ozzy right before his untimely death.
After the decades of info coming out about how ruthless the Osbournes are, no wonder why Rhoads wanted out.

Met Jake outside the coliseum in Portland Oregon in 1984 when Motley opend for them. Jake happened to be having a smoke out back about an hour and a half before the show started and got to talk to him a bit and he gave me a pick. I said hey Jake Williams.... he said ya, how did you know" Told him I had read in hit parader or circus (can't remember which) and that he was only getting 500 a week and thats it, he said yea but I'm supposed to get a bunch of royalties next record so it will all work out, Down to earth super mellow cool guy. Didn't act better than or stuck up at all considering he easily could have been. Crue was horrible as Ozzys crew was dumping flour on their heads from up above during their set.

It’s strange considering how all Metal guitarists in the 80’s thought playing with Ozzy was the Ultimate Dream Job. Jake was a world famous, certified Rock Star. Few ever get to live that life yet clearly Ozzy criminally underpaid his hired talent. Years later, a drummer friend I know briefly worked with Jake in Las Vegas where he was residing. It didn’t make sense to me that a RockStar would be working with a nobody drummer but even the greats fall really far sometimes.
Jake could get a viable band together and just play Bark + Sin + Badlands and it would put butts in the seats.

BTW, my friend Tina got aids from Ray. Her family waa not in the settlement and according to what I know as a paralegal...there was a deal cut with some of the famalies of the ladies Ray essentially killed. What I heard, not saying it is 100% true, but one of the deals in the settlement was Badlands cd's cannot be remasteted, re-relessed and if they were those famalies get most or all of the money made from them. Again not saying this is fact, but I heard this from 3 different sources and 2 of them were lawyers I know and trust.
That's why I can't find any to replace what the contractors stole...
@@Debra-k1f Make copies of your Badlands stuff. I made about 4 copies of my CD's and don't play the originals. In fact not everything out there has been remastered or reprinted. So say for example my Bonham cd, Cry Wolf, Faith or Fear, etc...make copies and do not listen to the original. I have seen certain CD's go for CRAZY...CRAZY money. I will always be upset with myself for giving my GF ...dearest love of my life for eternity the Badlands group photo shirt I got when I saw them at the Spectrum 1989...gave it to her and she cut it up sexy style or how I term my cut up shirts "Strutt Slut Cut'" (I am a Blondie bombshell old school metal Transgurl now as my vids show....OMG I wish I had that shirt. I saw it on eBay for $350. So.....do what ya gotta do to preserve your music!!!
Yes, I believe the record company agreed on a settlement to never publish Badlands music again in any format. That’s why it cannot be found in streaming services. I still have the two CDs. I ripped the Voodoo Highway CD into MP3 but I should make a backup along with the first album.
Badlands was such a killer band! It's a shame that Jake had so much tragedy at that time in his life. Killer guitarist and musician, he absolutely deserves better.

Seeing how poorly Ozzy and Sharon treated their band members, it’s pretty hard to feel bad for whatever ailments or unfortunate circumstances that may befall them.
Many have not needed to work, but he was still making music that he would use for Red Dragon Cartel.
I worked for the local promoter doing hospitality for bands and crew on the early 1980, and worked the Ozzy - Bark at the Moon show with Motley Crue supporting. At the time, i didnt realize what an important historical moment I experienced.
jake is awesome and such an underrated guitar hero. and of course, bark at the moon was one of the greatest of all time - and nobody could replace jake ( and never has ).
I'm more curious about Randy Castillo. He's credited as a songwriter on almost all the songs on No Rest for the Wicked and No More Tears but it's not clear to me what role he played in the process.

Jake E Lee is one of the most Underrated Guitar Players not only in Heavy Metal but in music in general.
Like with Randy Rhoads Jake was the "missing" link that Ozzy and Sharon so much needed for Ozzy being the Great Ozzy Osbourne again.
Sharon was a Blessing for Ozzy career success but She was/is a real Mean and Ruthtless person that don't have the slightest problem in finnish with someone's career and in a Cruel way.
Jake's a great guitarist. His rhythm playing is really interesting and he's a great lead player as well.

It's a real shame the way Jake was treated in the days with ozzy. One positive is his signature guitars with charvel and his signature amplifiers with Friedman but I doubt if sales on those products have put a whole lot in his pocket. I saw Jake in 1989 with Badlands, wow what a show that was!! He's very talented.

when i was kid in a touring band we played Bark at the Moon and Killer of Giants. we always thought Jake E Lee was the man, I mean he was playing with Ozzy. the highest plateau possible, the pinnacle of guitarist, set for life. I would have never imagined later in life he'd be struggling. I have both Badland "albums" and the guitar tab book for the first album. I can't fathom being as good as him and be struggling in the end. I toured for 5 years and packed it in at 25yrs old, got a real job and settled down. maybe I did make the right choice.

Just a bit about 'shot in the dark' i heard a demo of that before Phil Joined Ozzy..He was in a band called FM here in the uk with Chris and Steve Overland who were and are friends of mine. If i remember correctly, that was part of the deal that took him to ozzys band

Jake was in Motley Crue? I never heard that one. I heard about Jake maybe replacing Mick at one point but not playing in Crue for a short stint prior to playing with Ozzy.

The ironic fact here is that most of the contracts, if not ALL OF THEM, contain a statement at the end which reads "I declare that I am not signing this agreement UNDER ANY DURESS OR COERCION", I am pretty sure Jake's contract had it too...
Which is exactly how Sharon got him to sign. Threatening him. He could have disputed the contract in court. He could have won. However, the Ozzy's wallet is much
fatter, and they would have fought Jake long and hard.

His signiture guitar is still in production for Jackson Guitars i believe, its the longest running signiture guiyar in their catalogue, he'll get a few bucks from those as well.
Jake was the only person that enjoyed touring because of all the traveling . The other members of the band were already used to it and weren't as enthusiastic . Its sad they fukked him over . Hes the only guitarist that didn't do any trash talking of the Osbournes or say anything negative in a guitar magazine interview .

Jake was big time Roughcut and they were bad ass and he was the only guitarist in the band at that time. Dave Alford on drums, well it was like hearing Jake with John Bonham. They had a great keyboardist too. Paul Shortino singing. I'm telling you they were the real deal, not posers like Ratt and Crue and later renditions of Roughcut..
