When the original stage show's costumes look more eye-pleasing and more convincingly catty than the CG hybrids, they really ought to have reconsidered their movie's art direction.
Tom Hopper wanted to make so many changes(constantly) that the animation crew couldn’t keep up, they had to work over time, mostly sleeping at the studio to get what they could put. That’s how hard they were worked and this is the result.

There really is something beautiful about the ending message of this video. While negative criticism can be fun to watch, I love that NC always finds something positive to say, and this one in particular hit home hard: it's better to be memorable than profitable. When you make something, it has to hold your passion, so that even if it's god-awful, it's still unique and memorable. I love this, and it's something a lot more people need to hear.
anyone that still says that doug has "negatively contributed to film criticism as a whole" and compares him to cinemasins should watch this. He's improved and learned so much. I like the nod to ratatoullie at the end, but more than a reference, it is a lesson, and a thought provoking one too. good job man, and keep up the great work.
He has negatively contributed to film criticism as a whole. He was one of the first loud, nitpicky garbage reviewers. Cinemasins was born out of a trend he largely helped start up. But they are far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far worse than him.
@@grabble7605 However, ever since Lorax, he's shown that he actually knows what he's talking about, and has toned the Critic down so he's more like how Doug actually acts. Yes, early NC is bad for film, but modern NC actually feels like an old-style critic, not the angry ranter he once was. Even the skits are funny now, something you couldn't have told me with early Critic.
not to sound harsh but he has negatively contributed to film criticism and unfortunately that legacy will remain. but i do agree that he's improved a lot and that's worth something. i like it when he takes time to be a bit more sincere.
@Austin Ivey Nobody said he can't say what he wants. Just that he helped pioneer nitpicky bullshit internet reviewers which is true. CinemaSins, for starters, would not be if NC had not paved the path. Go on and get defensive though, fanboy.

I gotta say, watching the first couple minutes where everyone greeted and hugged each other got me right in the heart; enough to bring tears to my eyes as to how happy y'all were after not being together for what seems to be forever. So sweet 😊
"Jellicle cat" is a corruption of the words "dear little cat" while "Pollicle dog" is a corruption of the words "poor little dog". Both phrases originated from an unpublished T. S. Eliot poem titled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats". Your welcome.
@@fredmanto It makes more sense when you realize the writer wrote these for his toddler daughter who loved cats. Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats is a collection of poems that T. S. Eliot wrote about cats for his daughter. When his daughter was young, she would call cats "Jellicle Cats" and dogs "Pollicle Dogs", as toddler would mispronounce certain things or have difficulty with pronouncing words in general resulting in such baby talk. So all cats that he wrote about were her Jellicle cats and all dogs were her Pollicle dogs. In a letter to an associate, Eliot explained an idea he had for the last poem of his book (the poem was never written. The idea only existed in this letter, and was taken by Andrew Lloyd Webber and added to the musical), where all the cats and dogs would ride balloons up up up, to the Heaviside Layer.
Just popped in to say 1) it was heartwarming to see everyone back together and 2) go check out Sideways and his Cats review too. He did an in-depth musical analysis of all of the ways this film not only failed at being a good film but also a good musical performance. He also did like the best explanation of the stage show I've ever heard. Fun review though :)
@@AlinaAniretake Sideways' review focuses soley on the music failing Tarzan. While NC does talk about that too, he reviews the entire film as a whole. NC's talk of the music takes up less time than sideways too, since SW has a whole 20 minutes to talk about one aspect of the movie and NC takes 26 to review the entire film. Everyone shares similar critisicisms. Saying Nostalgia Critic stole Sideways' entire review is like saying he stole from Lindsay Ellis' brutal takedown of Phantom of the Opera(2004). I mean, I know NC's vid came out before but it's the same idea. They have similar criticisms towards one film. Trying to claim he stole it does nothing but highlight that you'll go out of your way to find any reason to hate this randomass TH-camr, and have to make up stuff to do so. -A fan of _both_ channels
1. That reunion was so wholesome.2. A perfect review to mark the return to the studio. 3. Now I wish they had stuck with Speilberg's animated version where they look like cartoon cats. 4. Mcavity!
Is it old enough yet to be nostalgic? Oh right it came out just before the pandemic (it was the last thing I saw in theatres before that happened) so of course we’re nostalgic for those times.
If you watch Sideways' video about the music in the show and how badly this film butchered it, you'll probably enjoy the original show even more while also hating Hooper as a director infinitely more
@@wilsonjonah funnily enough, he was the reason I finally appreciated 1998 version. I am still not a fan of Cats but thanks to him, I became angry on behalf every fan of Cats and appreciated Steven McRae more. Additionally, I appreciated Tick, Tick… Boom a lot more because of just the mere fact that it followed the music to the T very well and how the editing exacerbates the music. That one video made me appreciate Tick, Tick… Boom doing the bare minimum
Honestly this nightmare fuel would’ve perfectly fit Bakshi’s twisted genius, but with crazy good animation. The Spielberg animation concepts looked really good! Too bad his company didn’t get that movie off the ground
Maybe Baz Lurman would a better choice to direct Cats, his editing may be all over the place, but he would have made it fun, embraced the campiness, and has a good eye for production design and costumes.
Anyone would've been better than Tom Hooper. His choices completely bastardized the original score by letting the ACTORS lead the orchestra instead of the two working in tandem. He also completely misunderstood the importance of Victoria and the importance of touch to the jellical cats by not only having Victoria as the main character when Cats really didn't have one and by having Grizzabella recoil from being touched by Victoria despite the fact that all she wants is to be a jellical cat again (that's the whole point of her final belt in Memory) and by having Victoria TOUCH HER TO HELP HER STAND RIGHT BEFORE SHE BELTS OUT THAT FINAL PART OF MEMORY!!! This whole thing legitimately makes me angry
Moulin Cats? Feline Rouge? Imagining that is actually far less disturbing then the Uncanny Valley direction the Cats film we ended up with turned out to be...
That opening was so wholesome. I totally forgot that because of COVID-19, the crew couldn’t film under the same roof. The joy they all shared was so palpable.
Despite being considered too young to play Grizabella, Jennifer Hudson's performance of "Memory" was named as one of the redeeming things about the film.

I was quite disappointed afterwards when I wanted to see it again but it had no movie like Sound of Music, and I always hoped back then that somebody would make a movie of it so I could see it again. How young and naive I was. I still like Cats itself, but some things should definitely stick to its original medium, or atleast keep the irl costumes or animate it

don't worry. as soon as your local government needs to distract you from something they'll ramp up the fear porn again to distract you from what's going on.
My mom is always telling my sisters and me the story of how she walked away for ten minutes and came back to see her three eldest, as her fourth was not even alive yet, colored head to toe in washable marker, dancing around as if we were the actors on the stage. She had recorded on tape the PBS showing of Cats some years before and it was our favorite movie! It is still a favorite of mine. The old tape is long gone, but the new movie captured the magic and awe that inspired us, and me in particular, all those years ago. Was it a cinematic masterpiece? No. But it reawakened the joy that made me love musicals in the first place. It maybe just nostalgia painting the movie with a rose tinted lens, but Cats the Movie is work of art that I love.
The scene where they dance for Deuteronomy could have been really cool. Andy Blankenbuler’s choreography is incredible and the music’s great. As y’all mention though, The effects are freakin’ distracting and terrifying
Alas, the closest we ever got to an animated CATS musical was "Shinbone Alley"...and while it's a beautiful film in its own right it is very much a product of its time. 😕
Good to see the studio again! Now that you can go back there again you guys should do a clip less review again. I know with the way things are now there’s no need for them (as long as studios don’t abuse the copyright system) but I still want to see one again
hopefully, 10-20 years for now. "Mommy, why is the crew all hugging each other so happy, like they havent seen each other in years?" "Well junior, there was once this thing called the "Rona."
Though it wouldn't have been as big a spectacle an animated version probably would have worked better, wouldn't have the human-faced nightmare fuel and the song sequences could have been done in a Fantasia type dreamlike style.
Watching this, I almost forgot that there was a review after. There was just such a heartwarming scene of all these friends seeing each other again... and then the logo played and I had to go "oh shit that's right, there's a video."
28:29-30:55 Anton Ego’s speech from Ratatouille is a great way to finish off a review of this train wreck. Thank you for reminding your audience of a much better movie they can watch instead of this. Bravo!
29:27 oh my God, THAT'S IT! Andrew Lloyd Weber is THE GEORGE LUCAS OF BROADWAY. Coming off the weird, organic 70s, he introduced a big, pulpy spectacle that harkened back to a more classic format, and gave it just enough of a creative twist that it captured people's attention, and despite being only middling in its execution, took a fading niche art form into the mainstream.
And merchandised the holy shit out of it! Merchandising, marchandising! Where the real money in the play is made! CATS, the T-shirt! CATS, the lunch box! CATS, the coloring book! CATS, the breakfast cereal! CATS, the flamethrower!
Diva from Musical Hell has made that comparison too when she had to tackle Love Never Dies. The less said of that awful Phantom of the Opera sequel, the better.
Because with that you didn’t need an overdose of meth, crack, LSD and cold medicine to understand that it was a human in a costume. However this crap pretty much has chemo patients going “Can you take me off please?”. And if you think this comment is dark? Good it’s meant to be, that how angry and scared this movie made me.
That reunion was so wholsome probably the most cutest thing ever to be shown on this youtube channel and made me really happy until I realised what movie was being reviewed...
"The source also alleged that Hooper would make unusual requests to the special effects team, including asking to see footage of real cats performing the same dance movements he envisioned for the actors ultimately dressed as cats."

@@shayla106 that’s what happens when you hire a director who mostly specialises in grounded historical dramas and period pieces with no prior experience doing CGI heavy films to do a movie that is 98% CGI
@@mrcritical6751 that almost sounds like the original director for Willy Wonka except that was good

@@mrcritical6751 Mmm, not really. I saw some of the storyboard designs of the cats. Believe me, even if the VFX-Team had all the time and money in the world, those creatures would have looked horrible.
This movie should’ve just been animated with CGI cartoon cats

I wholeheartedly agree sir.
not to sound harsh but he has negatively contributed to film criticism and unfortunately that legacy will remain. but i do agree that he's improved a lot and that's worth something. i like it when he takes time to be a bit more sincere.
@Austin Ivey Nobody said he can't say what he wants. Just that he helped pioneer nitpicky bullshit internet reviewers which is true. CinemaSins, for starters, would not be if NC had not paved the path. Go on and get defensive though, fanboy.

AAAAAND it still makes no sense D:
@@fredmanto To be fair the English language in general rarely makes sense.
I thought it was spelled gelical, like angelical but stupid.
@@pianotm I'm still not sure what his toddler was originally trying to say. Kids make no sense
He checked, and Stole Tarzan review. Thanks
Sideways, Lindsay Ellis, and Nostaligia Critic are the Holy Trinity of Cats reviews.

Oh right it came out just before the pandemic (it was the last thing I saw in theatres before that happened) so of course we’re nostalgic for those times.
Or throw him out the door in the same manner as Will Smith on "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". The original, not the gritty-dramatic reboot.
When the Nostalgia Critic makes a an unusually touching intro like this, you know it’s a banger 😎

Tell me when he apologizes to the former content creators.
Cats the musical is a charming and fun musical, but the movie took away everything that made the musical endearing
But as was said, I agree that the film is so outlandish and bizarre that it's memorable.
If you watch Sideways' video about the music in the show and how badly this film butchered it, you'll probably enjoy the original show even more while also hating Hooper as a director infinitely more

Maybe Baz Lurman would a better choice to direct Cats, his editing may be all over the place, but he would have made it fun, embraced the campiness, and has a good eye for production design and costumes.
Maybe Julie Taymor?
Maybe Taika Waititi. He’d probably embrace the weirdness 80’s style look of the original play
