- This is my reconstruction of all the filmed footage of the Beatles' recording session at Studio 3 at Abbey Road for Hey Bulldog. I have taken the raw footage from an HMC disc, and added HD footage from the original Lady Madonna promo as well as Hey Bulldog. I have also appropriately synced each clip where they are recording for the song (so certain scenes sadly cannot have any audio attached). Enjoy!

If any other band had released this song, it’d be their defining song, biggest hit. For the Beatles, it was just a song they made for a movie. What a great band

@A Bored English Guy not really. With the Stones and Jumpin Jack Flash, it was and was meant to be put out there as their next big smash/hit/release/single. Not just an aside, or piece for a soundtrack album, like this was. And while it is true and agreed that when Jagger and Richards were on the ball, they were great. But... never anything comparable to the Beatles. Lennon and McCartney were already old pros at writing and composing a hit by the time when the Stones manager began telling Mick and Keith that they needed to lock themselves up in a room alone and not come out until they've figured out how to write songs like the Beatles. And, as a favor and example to use, Oldham (Stones first manager) even went to Lennon and McCartney to ask them to write and then hand over to them something original that they could use. John and Paul then wrote and gave them the song "I wanna be your man" and it then became the Stones first big one that got the ball rolling for the whole world to begin listening to them. In the beginning Brian Jones was pretty much all of the talent in the Stones, until the rest of them all also came into their own and began being a real force. Personally I love the Beatles and I also love the Stones. But when each of them were doing their absolute best work, it was also a very different thing that they each were doing. Not really "apples to apples" and fair to try to straight up compare. They were both legendary and great. But all things considered, the Beatles still will forever have the edge and upper hand.

It wasn't done for a movie. This was early '68, just before they went to India. Other songs recorded at this session, Lady Madonna, The Inner Light, Across the Universe.

Well the historians say we'll only see a group or musicians come along this good only once every 400 years. I got to see the whole story and I feel we were all lucky to see this. It won't come again in our lifetimes!

@@jk4675 Name any musician today who will be remembered in 5 years. Study your history and read Mark Lewishons "Tune In" 3 part story of The Beatles. Vol I is 950 pages long in two books. Part 2 may be out in 2023. Not sure about part 3. Part 3 is the breakup years but part 2 is the touring years-that, I have to read. You will then understand, and be amazed!

Any scrap of film of The Beatles actually at work is priceless and so valuable for generations to come. People will always be looking for the 'magic ingredient' and asking 'How did they do it?'. Very real; very 'organic'; no digitally created sounds. Drummers, for instance, will be taking note of all those tea-towels lagging Ringo's drums. The Beatles.

In the 80s I was lucky enough to work with the late great Tony Davilio, who was John's Grammy awarded musical director on Double Fantasy. He said that Lennon's vocal on Twist and Shout was the hottest rock and roll vocal performance ever recorded. Hyperbole maybe, I think he may have been right! 12:40

Lennon’s writing style is so distinct. He poses a Statement or a question followed by an explanation or clarification. He did that in a number of songs.
The bass part in this is beyond epic. When I was learning bass, I spent hours figuring it out. There are still a couple places where I just sit there in mute wonder... Like, wait- what the hell was THAT?

@@thegoddamnbatman3078 The term "greatest" is rather subjective but also you should consider the Beatles opened the door for bands like Nirvana, Ramones, Deep Purple etc. Not sure if you are aware but the Beatles were rejected by a record label because the executives felt guitar rock music was dead. This was in like 1962 bro. How wrong were they? If the rest of the industry followed suit and it resulted in the Beatles never getting more exposure then beyond dump bars in Liverpool and Hamburg who knows if any of those other bands would have ever made it out of the garage or whatever?

The Beatles. The Greatest Band of All Time. Their influence on Rock and Pop Music is Worldwide, since February of '64. No other band comes close. They've outsold every other band or artist, and continue to do so, 50 some years after they broke up. Again, No One comes close. Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt.Pepper, The Beatles (White Album) and Abbey Road are 5 of the Top 100 Albums of All Time, considering all 5 were recorded in a little over 4 years. 20 #1 Hit Records (45RPMs) between '64 and '70. They are the only band to be in the RNRHOF as a Group and as Solo Artists.
Anyone who still questions why they stopped touring to spend more time in the studio, just show them this to appreciate the wonderful creative geniuses at work, we are truly blessed to have had these four guys.

George, George Harrison did manage to record a lot of those Lead Solo's on the fly. Bulldog was one of those tunes. I can imagine that it must have been really wild for Paul or John to ask George if he had any fills that would fit.......
Ya know, I am going through as many YT video's where George Martin, George Harrison, John Lennon or Paul McCartney talk about the early days.
I can only imagine that most of them will get pulled down by any of the Estate Members. It's happened before & I was pissed at myself for not downloading any of those interviews. But that was then & now it's now baby, I'm downloading everything I can find because I have two younger generations in our family who are Beatle Fans & that is so cool..... I can still remember back when my son told me that he loved listening to The Beatles. Then about 15 years ago, my oldest Grandson mentioned the same thing to me.
Believe me when I tell you this. Knowing that my oldest son & oldest grandson Love the Beatles as much as I do has been one of the greatest joys of my life....5
@@montydaniels1054 George was pulling fills and rhythm parts out of fresh air when he was 16 as lead guitarist for the band - he was the one listening to American jazz and country blues, people like Django Reinhardt Carl Perkins and Chet Atkins - great players. His sister lived in America and he had early access through her. Listen to I'll Be Back - John, Paul and George have a guitar part on that recording but only George could introduce Spanish / Latin licks to an English pop song in 1964 - th-cam.com/video/fJSTBNTac6k/w-d-xo.html - a genius in his own right.

Fantastic to see Ringo playing this wonderful’rythm. And notice how there is no showing off on the guitar, no pouting, no burning, just simple respect for an instrument which is just a vehicle for music.
Ringo really lays into that snare drum. I was surprised to see how hard he hits it.
So much respect for the music! Paul sees that bass is unnecessary, piano and guitar are covered, so he lays passionately into that tambourine! Much less ego than he usually gets accused of.
Ringo’s tea towels muffling the drums gets just the right sound.
I think the Beatles were in a class all by themselves. It's almost impossible to compare them with any of their contemporaries.

I always chuckle at the story that Ringo took with him a suitcase full of baked beans when they went to Rishikesh to see the Maharishi. I guess he didn’t pack nearly enough tins though, cos he certainly bailed pretty early!

NOPE. great songs, great band, but none are the goat by themselves. NO Paul isn't even the best bass player in the band. Good video, one of my favorite songs when I was in high school, love the chord progression and super interesting to see John working it out, his piano is the ONLY standout performance here, thumbs up but, NO NO NO, why the unnecessary hyperbole? Nothing here is the greatest.
It is so great to see John and Paul working so close together, just having fun. They truly loved each other like brothers, maybe fought like brothers, but the chemistry is undeniable. Thanks for sharing.

They actually had a vault containing hundreds of unreleased beatles fooatges so definitely we're only seeing atleast haft of all beatle studio footages.

This is actually a jewel: the only video of a complete real Beatle studio recording of a song. “All you need is love” was more like a live show recording. “Hey bulldog” was caught on video as it was recorded and the tune is an absolute rocker!

The lead guitar solo is one of the best and my favorite guitar solos of all time -- i love it - it never gets old!
Steve Hunter’s live intro for Lou Reed to Sweet Jane, 12/21/73, is THE best guitar solo ever, but George Harrison, on Hey Bulldog, is absolutely fantastic.

I love this song, ever since I heard it the first time, oh so many years ago. It's incredible it is one of the lesser known pieces by the Fab. If I've read correctly, they just basically went to the studio to film a promo for another song, and this one just 'happened'.

I concur with all those who see the genius in this song. The thing about this group, the thing that too damn many people overlook, is that even songs that some dolts consider to be a "throwaway", are whip-smart and more fun that the best tune from
thousands of other bands. On top of that, you get a tremendous performance, spontaneous, rocking, rollicking, and sharp as a tack. And as a bonus, far better production than the digitized, computerized and auto-tuned sadness that we are stuck with at the moment.

I was 5 months old when this recording session went down.
With a brief bonus audio snippet of John working out the melody for “You Know My Name”!
First heard this in the 90’s when Ocean Colour Scene were big with songs like Riverboat Song and Hundred Mile City… and I then realised where they got their sound from.
And that’s the fascination in the Beatles I believe.. every new generation discovers that they were the original. The real thing.. the best.

I'm always fascinated to watch The Beatles working through the creative process. I'm happy that they appear to be really enjoying the session. John and Paul's vocals are always in unison.The blending of their voices is unique, memorable and so easily discernible.

I wish I could be in the studio during some recording session with them, just for one day, they loved what they were doing.
Their most underrated song. Shows off the best of each member. Paul’s incredible baseline, John’s wit and raw voice, ringo absolute groove-master, and George with the perfectly tasteful guitar and perfect solo. The greatest band of all time, and in case you’re still unsure, it ain’t really close. It’s the Beatles, then everyone else.

Watching Paul and John at that late date standing at the mike together singing and laughing together warmed my heart. What a wonderful time to have been alive. And to have two enormous talents standing there singing for one new song with Ringo and George as players I forget sometimes just how awesome my youth was growing up with the freedom and the music of giants. It was an amazing time in deed.

According to Geoff Emerick this was the last unifying Beatles session. After they went to India and did the white album then let it be and Abby road. None of those sessions were like this he said. This was the last. Afterwards hardly all four where even in the studio at the same time and let it be was them playing live not making a studio recording as they were and are known.
This is great! Johnny's lyrics were so adventures and really created the Beatle spirit. I bet Paul, George, and Ringo were in awe of what John would come up with!
Part of the problem with John during the Get Back Sessions was his lack of New Material, let alone being Stoned and constantly having Yoko around. It bothered Paul and it was also a factor in George splitting the Band for a bit, despite his Argument with Paul days before and his Argument with John about Yoko on the day he left. John's only real contributions to those sessions was Dig A Pony and Don't Let Me Down, and to a lesser extent, the Everybody Had A Hard Year part of I've Got A Feeling. Not Lennon at his best. If Lennon could've come up with a Hey Bulldog type song or two, things may have been alot different, vibe wise.
IMO the most underrated Beatles song.

People talk about the genius of the Beatles, but if you see and hear their demo tapes and ideas for songs that they're working out you understand that genius really is 99% hard work and 1% inspiration. They take fragments and ideas for songs that start out as nothing special and work them into masterpieces.

I love that they went into the studio intending to film a video for Lady Madonna, but once they got there were like “nah we’re just gonna do this new song instead cause we’re the Beatles. Now where’s me beans and toast?”
Kudos to AdamBound for putting this amazing piece of history together. As a Beatles-completist, I want everything I can get my grubby hands on related to the greatest musical force the world has ever seen. Keep up the great work!

They worked on their songs like artists do on paper before finally working on the canvas. They began with thumbnail "sketches" to get their first ideas down, then added and refined the details until they were ready to put it all together on tape.
the constant switching between the yellowed weathered film stock and the preserved bits are so surreal... kudos to whoever assembled all the maddening bits of audio and video... my god... that probably took so much longer than the original production!! it's like we keep switching between the ancient wavy uneven days of the 1930s... and present... that means there must be nearly complete audio records of this day... that would be cool to leave on... it's a shame we didn't have every minute of their lives taped to scrutinize years layer... at the ashram with prudence farrow... all of it
They put everything they had into every recording they made and made each THE BEST THAT IT COULD BE, which in the case of four incredibly talented musicians, is pretty damn incredible.

I’m 69 y/o and a huge Beatle fan from the beginning. Still can’t figure out how I only heard Hey Bulldog for the first time a couple of yrs ago (2020ish). Really has an aggressive edge. I immediately associate it with the Revolver album. Never cease to be amazed how Beatle songs evolve from ideas and crude beginnings to often completely different final product masterpieces.
Nothing and I mean nothing is more satisfying than the craft of writing arraigning and recording and hearing the fully achieved results . Nothing .
