- This is my reconstruction of all that was filmed at The Beatles’ recording session for Hey Jude at EMI / Abbey Road Studios. I have taken all the clips released on HMC’s disc and properly sequenced and synced them. It is worth noting that I have had to use audio from other takes for some clips, due to a lack of availability for most outtakes. In addition, there are some clips where audio cuts off abruptly, which is due to only a portion being released, and quickly edited to something else in the original Experiment in TV special. I have also fixed the significant green tint on many of the clips. Enjoy!

Was busted up in Nam in 68' - came back to the states and was recuperating in St. Albans Naval Hospital in Queens NY - when this song come on the radio. I started to sing along with my voice ringing down the ward hall - in few minutes the whole wing of the hospital was singing along - the head nurse come in to shut us up - BIG MISTAKE - we kept on singing louder and louder - for about a week this song came on the radio about the same time each morning - really raised the spirits of the wounded - something that was really needed - this song has a special place in my heart today almost 45 yrs later!

Its the greatest song ever made
the more we see of 66-69 Beatles the more we understand what a creative monster Paul McCartney was. its actually baffling how you have him and John Lennon in the same band, being from the same area and the same age. And whilst John Lennon was seemingly quite a bit lazier and happy to just chill and enjoy his life, McCartney must have understood that he had to make the most of his youth and energy and get as many songs and projects down before age tamed the fire. Seeing as Georgie Harrison also came up with some great tracks is the conclusion we come to that talent for creativity isn’t born but earned? A skill to be honed and worked at. Otherwise how else can you explain how all this talent came together in one group in one moment in history.
McCartney most certainly had that talent from birth! and he was the most relentless.
I think the overall explanation is that John and Paul made each other into geniuses. They were born to be together. There was such an incredible connection, so much love. We saw it in Get Back. It's not sexual. It's something at a higher level. They referred to their songs as "the children". It's a love story that produced over 200 children, it exploded into music that transcendds everything, it changed the world. The Beatles breakup was really the Lennon/McCartney breakup. The world still hasn't healed from it.
Pete Best could write some solid music as well. The original Beatles must have been something amazing to see. Ringo was super talented too but you could tell he did not feel like it was his band. Just the name alone is great. A musical play on words while sticking to an insect which was so popular back then. You had to see that name for the first time and just knew you were about to see and hear magic.

Lol what? John's songs were way more creative than Paul's. Much deeper, more meaningful, all whilst he had less musical knowledge. Paul never write anything like a day in the life, or happiness is a warm gun. John's first solo album is better than anything paul done solo. Even in the early days, all the best songs were written mainly by John. Paul had to work hard to write good songs, to Lennon, they came without effort.
@@bendagostino2217 Paul co wrote Day in the Life. His album Ra,m is now considered a masterpiece. Paul was the avant garde, experimental one. John's solo albums were not very inventive.
Paul's voice when he was in his prime is just un-f&*kin believable. So smooth and easy and just so so fine. Wow.
Paul’s voice NOW is just UN-F&*KIN’’ believable!!!!! I saw him in 2021 at Dodger Stadium, and he ran around that stage like a TEENAGER!
Smooth also brutal at the same time!!

And it's my belief (as a Voice Actor myself), he often used HIS Voice Acting talent in many ways on many of his vocals. But when I purchased my Trident 32x8x2 console for my own studio, the literature that came with it said that the FINAL version of the song was recorded at Trident Studio, in London's West End, The Beatles often recorded there when they couldn't get "their" usual room at Abbey Road. Also, among many other bands, The Rolling Stones recorded at Trident. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is one example. The kids' choir on that recording came from the school next door to Trident!
I think I was 9 y.o. when Hey Jude was released. I know it was summer and we kids were all playing around the neighborhood. I remember when we first heard this song coming from some teenager’s radio, we all just stopped what we were doing and just listened. It was weird, but it’s true. It was like some magic spell hit us.
My mother sang this song while I was sitting on her lap. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was born in 69, but in Grade 5 our Music teacher was a major Vancouver Island hippie. We spent that whole year singing Beatle songs. All the hits. Opened up so much after that. Best time of my life and my favorite class ever. That was my introduction to the Beatles.
Learned the details of how the Beatles worked together. I like the way Paul and John once they had an idea how a song should be rarely listened to anyone but each other. This isn’t a dis on George and Ringo they are both fabulous, but when the two of them were together it was magic.

I was -39 years old but I think it’s one of the timeless songs
My dad first heard this song when he was 15, it was 1969 and we live in Indonesia. But at the time, he lives in a village in northern part of the Island of Sumatra. He said he was at my grandfather small rice fields to do some works (that's how many Indonesian do in 1960s). Their only family entertainment was a small radio, no smartphones or even television, just radio. He said it was on that afternoon he heard Hey Jude for the first time, and he was mesmerized by the soothing melody and somehow uplifting mood from the music, and he didn't even understand a single word on that songs because he didn't understand or speak English. Although years from that moment he start learning and understand English, but he still in awed how Hey Jude inspired him to do better in life. I thanked The Beatles and Sir Paul for this everlasting song

17:07, George Martin tells Paul over the talkback that "there was some great moments of singing in that, Paul, but it wasn't the one." By even many professional musician's standards, Paul had just laid down a banger of a track, but Martin just knew he could get more out of him. Such a cool moment, to me.
George and Paul made sure those LPs came out right
IMO that captures the biggest difference between Beatles and solo work. No one there to tell them it's good but they could do better. Personal opinion but all their solo works seem incomplete compared to the Beatles.

I think he's finding the right note. It's like in Yesterday, both are in F chord from the start and there's a kinda debate or issue if "Yesterday" was flat at first something like that
That's what singers do. You have to remember a note later and sing it again.

The Beatles were so interconnected as if they were raised by the same mother. They had an ear for each other, and Ringo pieced the three singers with his drums nicely. I believe their fame was due to how Ringo managed their songs with his drums.

As a kid when The Beatles were active, this is great to see. It was a magical time to be alive. The greatest band in history bar none, they still make you happy sixty years later.
I remember like yesterday seeing the Beatles preform this song on the Dick Cavet Show via prerecorded video. I feel lucky to have lived through the best years of rock and roll.

Ringo does some sweet stuff on here. I'm a bass player, and I think he provides the exact feel that makes bass playing fun. he's a sly genius.

It's amazing how perfect they sound just playing live off the floor. It makes you realize how authentic and unaltered their recordings were. Paul's vocals sound better in one take than most modern vocalists do after countless takes pieced together and digitally corrected.

Hard to believe this was FIFTY THREE YEARS AGO . Paul had it all as a composer,bass player,guitar player,piano player,and a vocal range that has to be close to four octaves,and an ear for harmonies that is incredible .
Without that range he would not have had the latitude to write such unbelievable melodies .

by the music of the day around 2002. I told them if they were going to get into music they should start with the best! We listen to every single, all the albums, and watched all the movies. They listen to other music just as we did but their first love is still, “The Beatles”.

Ringo never gets the credit he deserves. He's left handed, playing right handed drums. He's brilliant and was really respected by other muscians.
There are some songs so perfect they sound like they must have always existed, even before someone wrote them; they transcend time. This is one of those songs.
How is it possible to have such a trademark sound ? Being a great musician isn't about the number of notes you can play per minutes, or complicated jazz chords you can deliver, it's just about some things you just can't explain. Some music intellectuals should put their ego in their pockets by listening to this.
They became great because they all paid their dues with a grueling schedule in Germany.

It's not a main part, but how John constantly plays perfect up strokes quietly on the guitar to compliment Paul's downs on the piano, is masterful as well. Talk about supporting the song!

I was thinking the same thing. The acoustic guitar is mixed lower in the final version, but here it's a bit more prominent and it gives the song a bit of chug. It sounds like a Gibson--woody and full--but it's hard to tell because there's no shot of it from the front.

The way he could just carry a tune with his voice alone was amazing. Listen and examine his work. The man was a TRUE musical genius. His talent was beyond any comparison and the fact that him and John found each other at such a young age was MORE than mere coincidence. THAT was fate. Did you know that on the day they met, July 6, 1957, that Liverpool saw it's first thunderstorm in almost two decades? LOL..I'm not going THAT far....but still.

I think one of the most amazing things about the Beatles was that they kept experimenting and producing amazing music no matter what they tried. So many artists have a good album or two at best and then they're done. The Beatles understood melody and chord progression better than anyone.
Paul was a musical genius definitely what he done for the Beatles is insane! John knew it and so did George but he was jealous and bitter even though Paul made him rich
@@MrThedonhead I heard somewhere that Paul could play about 100 instruments. Whatever the number is , it's amazing. Isn't it true that Paul played the drums on Helter Skelter or some other White Album song ? I bet there are very few musicians who could fill in for someone else in their band .
As a PERFECT pocket drummer, Ringo was exactly what the Beatles needed. I think I remember Paul saying they didn't even notice Ringo, he was just there, in a perfect way. I think in the 70's Ringo was hugely underrated because he never had the need to stand out in the song. He absolutely hated drum solos; the boys had to beg him to do it in songs like "Birthday".
The fact that they can record the whole song including practice in 18 minutes is amazing!

The thing too is music like this brings people together.... That's a rare and magical quality. So few can do that.
They’re musicianship improved so fast! By then they were producing real memorable works. Paul’s voice is in fine form here, not to mention his piano playing. They were and still are so many of our heroes, our touch points in important memories, the background sound weaving through our growing years.
Love how Paul looks at his teammates while talking to them ! He's so involved, probably so loveable and so convincing...

My parents had never been that crazy about The Beatles. “Hey Jude” changed all of that. We watched the video on “The Smothers Brothers” and were all blown away. My father brought home the single the next day.

What else to say about that….outstanding Interpretation, maybe one of the most iconic songs in the modern times….I am glad just to be in this world at same time that those genius guys. Even a simple record session is already a state of art version.
When the Beatles composed this beautiful song, I was 22 years old and I first met the Beatles accidentally, when I listened to Radio Luxembourg as a 16-17 year old - before that I used listen to Elvis Presley, Shadows, Cliff Richard, Petula Clark etc.
The other songs didn't interest me - they seemed all musically uninteresting. Suddenly I heard something completely new, a completely different music, which I found beautiful. I didn't understand the fast-talking moderator, so I watched him say a name repeatedly for this music, and after many attempts, I distinguished that the band was called the Beatles. I was proud to have discovered them for myself.
Now that I'm 75, I'm still listening to them and playing guitar again after a 45-year hiatus, thanks to my daughter, who wanted me to sing Hey Jude at her wedding in september 2020.
Now I enjoy their music just like when I was young and they were at the peak of their era. So far no band had surpassed them.

It's interesting how long the lines "She has found you / now go and get her" were in there before being changed to "You have found her / now go and get her" considering how much more natural and rational the second version reads. It just goes to show it's not done until it's done. The painter Pierre Bonnard used to carry a small paint kit and would touch up his works even as they hung in galleries and museums.

I'm not a big singalong type, but this song is just striking. It starts off almost like a lullaby, and then it just morphs into some gospel tune. I was born well after this song came out, and everyone and their cousin tried to replicate it. I can't imagine what it was like to suddenly hear something sounding like this for the first time tho....

My mom was 13 when “Hey Jude” came out and she said there was nothing else like it. People worldwide were obsessed-it was such a unique, beautiful, and uplifting song.
Marianne Faithfull tells the story where she saw Paul scurrying around at a party and he had something behind his back. She said “Hey Paulie what do you have there?!” and it was a press of Hey Jude before it was officially released. She said they all made him play the record over and over all night long, they loved it so much.
It's still amazing to me one of the writers/performers of one of the greatest bands ever is still with us today and still making music. We should cherish this fact and really appreciate it because he may not be with us for much longer (although it seems like he's got another 20 years left in him!).
The final, released version of Paul's singing is so ingrained into my memory, that even the slightest difference in singing, as in these out-takes, is glaringly obvious.
This song would have to be amongst the greatest of Beatles songs.
From the very beginning, "Hey Jude...." it makes you want to listen.
Even when the lyrics are different, you know. "She has found you, now go and get her" didn't make the final cut.

Man, would love to hear the original audio on this footage. 2:55 could be the infamous conversation where Paul told George he didn't want him playing on the track.
Really felt for George on this one. He tried to contribute, but Paul already had the arrangement in his head. You can’t really argue with the end result - an absolute masterpiece that deserves all the success and accolades that followed. George really retreats from the recording, as he’s seen mostly in the control room. Aside from his backing vocals, you can barely hear any contributions from George on this song. They probably always interacted like this, but surely it was adding to tensions at this point, certainly with George.

The Beatles recorded the master track for "Hey Jude" at Trident Studios, St Anne's Court in Soho, London. Trident also gained a reputation for the sound of its piano, which can be heard on the Beatles' "Hey Jude", Elton John's "Your Song", Carly Simon's "The Right Thing To Do", Queen's "Killer Queen" and many other tracks.
I believe that today Trident largely records voice-over work for adverts.

His voice is just magical. No cover version can even come close to the original, it’s perfect. One of the most iconic songs ever recorded and one of the most inspiring and uplifting as well.
Such a technically perfect and beautiful warm vocal performance by Paul. Such a genius talent. The piano part also is very present in this version and the drums have this great feeling to it. Hear the electric guitar also very good during the na na na section, especially in the first take.

I really love this footages. This is my favorite band since I was 11. I’m 28 now. This really warms my heart whenever I feel down.
March 1968 I bought the single, Hey Jude and there was an old record player in a small bar in the square, where the kids could get together and take their records to play. I remember one afternoon when we ran Hey Jude 88 times. It wasn't until months later that I discovered that I had a B-side on the disc. And only years, decades later, I discovered that, without knowing it, I had lived a magical time that I would never have in my life. Hey Jude is ecstatic.
Came out in August '68
I was eight years old when I saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show with my three older brothers. The world changed overnight. I still listen and feel the magic these many years later.

I will always love this song. I was lucky enough to see Paul sing this in concert back in the 80s. The entire stadium was lit up with people holding candles or lighters, and EVERYONE was singing along. It was magical.

That’s because he was nuts in a positive way many greats are multiple personalities I should only know. Saw him live on my 50th b-day ..bucket list event for me. This old cat wore me out after Like 3 hours of songs. Was not just a concert but a life event I will remember like the time I got out of a manhole and George Clooney walked in front of me. Let it be known from Hesse forth..Paul was actually the true leader of this group from its beginning to its end. He was the one who made the contact with John, he was already friends with George and decided to bring him into the group then George got Ringo in. Paul’s song writing keep them going after 1967, heck John wanted to leave in 1965. Yep the Beatle are part of humanities history.
