    As a botanist, this is a genius idea. I’ve actually use this method on a few of my plants that weren’t doing so great do your plants need the calcium? No. Do they grow stronger with calcium? Yes. Especially like I said plants that aren’t doing so well. However, you do need to be careful how much you give them I say only do this mixture, at least once to two times a month. Because exposing the plant to too much calcium in a short amount of time can actually kill the plant off.

      This video is so wrong, actually eggshells are 95% calcium CARBONATE, which means they're 38% calcium, the other 57% is carbonate.
      The carbonate content is actually a bit higher because there's other carbonate compounds in it as well.
      Furthermore, you have NOT produced calcium. You made calcium acetate when you reacted the acetic acid with CaCO3, not calcium.

    You don't have to bother with the blender. Just crush the eggshells into little bits. You can mix it into the soil or just sprinkle it on the dirt. Watering will break the eggshells down. Dumping a whole bunch of liquid calcium on them will overwhelm them. Better to do it the slow, natural way.

    For those who want to know what the compound he made is:
    He crushed eggshells which contain a high percentage of Calcium carbonate(CaCO3). Then he mixed it with vinegar which is diluted acetic acid(CH3COOH).
    Then the CaCO3 and the CH3COOH formed calcium acetate(C4H6CaO4).
    Fun fact: calcium acetate is used as a medicine to treat hyperphosphatemia.

    This stuff will save your tomato harvest big time. Tomatoes tend to be heavy feeders and they'll make themselves mineral deficient pretty quick if you don't keep on top of it. Biggest common issue as a result of this is blossom end rot, where your tomatoes rot on the vine, and this calcium extract will prevent that, especially if you can combine it with magnesium which you can get from burnt cucumber peels

      That's the reason why I found this video, my tomatoes are starting to get blossom end rot. Although I wonder since he's using vinegar to extract the calcium, will the vinegar affect the acidity in the soil and throw off the PH level? I'm all for the calcium getting to the tomato plant but I'm a little concerned the acidity would upset the plant.

    You're suppose to do a 10-1 ratio by weight. I put it in a 2 liter bottle and lightly tighten with cap with a piece of thick fabric under the cap so it can breath. Anyway, you're suppose to let the mixture sit until bubbles quit forming. Then you can add it to water. You haven't allowed the chemical reaction to finish. You have vinegar and eggshells, not calcium acetate.

    • @shaneturnes6458
      @shaneturnes6458 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Exactly! We use a 9-1 ratio (9 parts vinegar, 1 part egg shells). The chemical reaction can take anywhere from 48 hours to a few weeks to complete. 5% acidity vinegar will give you a 2.5% calcium acetate solution. Then we dilute it with rain or distilled water (1 teaspoon per gallon of water). You can also add 1/3 teaspoon Epson salt to the solution for magnesium, if needed. Very good solution to help against blossom end rot.
      The bubbles are CO2 escaping. He basically added acid to his plants 😢.

    • @bakedatassup
      @bakedatassup ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It just takes a long time for it to break down and be available for the plant to absorb. By soaking the shells invinegar you make calciym acetate, a water soluble calcium, that the plant can intake immediately instead of 6 months to a year from now. It's better to be proactive than reactive when it comes to gardening. Maintain healthy soil instead of amending dead soil.
