This story is beyond fascinating. A world of a hundred years ago that many people would never imagine could have existed. And a truly heroic protagonist.
Add to this an accomplished storyteller! What a combination.

Enthralling and mesmerizing performance. I’m right back in the mid 1920s pouring over “Black Mask.”

This fascinating detective story is also as great as any one man theatrical performance I have ever seen. I'm reminded of Hal Holbrook's "Mark Twain Tonight" 40 years ago. Holbrook inhabited Twain's speech and mannerism so completely that part way through his performance I'd stopped witnessing an actor's impression of the great 19th century writer and began to watch Mark Twain. This skillful rendition of Hammett's short novel is complete with the 1920s era office and sound effects from San Francisco's downtown district. This is a brilliant experience.

    YOWZA !!
What a treat! The whole shootin' match....The city sounds, the gritty speech-patterns, the slightly shop-worn knight in THAT HAT, and expressive, without chewing the furniture....
What a treat ! Dash would be proud.

Samuel Dashiel Hammett is my 9th cousin! For years I have enjoyed is work. When I started doing genealogy imagine my surprise to learn this. Wish my father had lived to know, he would have smiled.

Good reader and I like the presentation very much. It’s amazing that people could be so cavalier about civil rights and the use of ethnic slurs. I remember when police were no longer allowed to use the “third degree” and could no longer beat suspects with a rubber hose or telephone book (so there wasn’t the evidence of bleeding). People would, then, say that would make it impossible to catch criminals. Another outcry when the Miranda warning was instigated. And, yet, we still catch criminals. People still use ethnic slurs but not with the casualness exhibited in this story or in my youth. Bad as things can be today, we’ve plugged up a couple of holes in civic behavior.

Very well done! I’m not sure why there aren’t more comments, but I guess great oaks from little acorns grow... I WAS wondering if the traffic noise was normal ambiance or whether it’s part of a finely crafted sound track.
