The employer may also be wasting your time for their own selfish purposes, such as being able to demonstrate a diverse applicant pool. I've had internal recruiters reach out to me on Monday and on Wednesday state that an offer had just been extended to someone else. I've also gone through a full-day panel interview process, ghosted for 6 weeks and then learned that the duties were given to those of an internal candidate who had interviewed me.

Really? I've had jobs wherein it took nearly, a month, before they gave me a job offer, these instances were both due to a high volume of applicants. One immediately gave me the job offer after I followed up after nearly a month of waiting.
If a company chose to take a month to fill a position, the person hired would have at least a month of work to catch up on or more. It would be a very hard job with a huge work load. Hey big fan of the videos! Lots of great recommendations! I have to say i completely disagree with your point about not reconsidering the candidate which followed back up (six times). To disregard someone so passionate about your company would be a major mistake. Likely that candidate is interviewing with other companies and is not only focussing all his time on yours. However, he clearly favors your company over the others. While everyone says they're specifically interested in a company, while interviewing, this candidate was probably being genuine about it. Not easy to find. A genuine interest in the work a company does is going to allow for the best quality of work possible. You don't have to extend extra effort to motivate that employee.
Some large companies have multiple steps and different people along the way. Three to five business days in the process and your file will be in a different office.
If they told me it might take 2 weeks because of other candidates being interviewed, but a different company reached out to me with an offer and i need an answer sooner than later, should I contact the original company sooner than 2 weeks?
There are 2 slight misconceptions here: 1) Persistence gets jobs - this may be true for a tiny minority of candidates, but not for the majority, as although the recruiter may choose to hire a person who was persistent, most candidates (no matter how persistent) will not get the position, so it isn't persistence that gets them the role. 2) Being persistent means you'll automatically stay with a company long-term - this also isn't necessarily true as job seekers are often looking for what they need right now, and in a year or 2 years' time they might be looking for something new. It's not their persistence that means they'll stay long-term but their commitment to the role when they actually get there, as well as the support companies will give them in their role. If it was persistence that got people jobs, I'd have loads of them right now.
Persistence doesn’t always get you the job. Persistence can annoy the hiring manager to the point where you ruin your chances of getting the job. Follow up, maybe once, and walk away after that.
If you haven't heard back from them by the time they said, it's because they offered it to someone else. The day after they were supposed to get back to you, send a polite follow-up email letting them know you're interested, because there is still the chance whoever they offered it to will refuse and that will increase your chances of them liking you as a second option. But do not sit around waiting to hear back from them. Keep looking for something else, and worry about them if/when they get back to you.
The recruiter ghosted me after about 3 follow ups from us both. He was telling me that I did great, the directors of the dept are working diligently to fit me in, etc. Been almost 1.5 months & still no offer. Now the recruiter stopped replying. Now, this hospital is notorious for their hiring process taking a long time, but this is insane.
So it's like a fucking game I waited a whole week and I poured my heart out in that interview and no one is answer and replying and I might just give up that's some bullshit
I only follow up if the company offers a decent pay. If I was applying at a fast food then I won't even bother putting time and energy. I would just keep on applying elsewhere. They must have lost their minds if they expect me to dedicate my time and energy to show my interest in working for them if they are going to pay $7.25/hr. The only companies I bothered following up was Ross and Dillard's cause they pay decent. The job offer for Ross was passed over to someone else but I got Dillard's. These are the people I would gladly follow up on.
That's a great point, focus your job search energy towards the roles you truly want, or else you will spread yourself too thin. Great to hear that you have target companies that you are pursuing.
Hello Madeline. I had my initial interview with a recruiter, then my 2nd interview with one of the hiring managers. There is another round of interviews. Who should I send the follow up email to? The recruiter or the hiring mgr? Or both??
Thank you for reinforcing that persistence is OKAY in job searching! It took me a while to get that. Question for you, if you reach out to HR and hear that you did not make the cut to move forward in the interview process, is it okay, in your opinion, to send a slightly longer email emphasizing why you love the company and that you hope they will keep you in mind for anything else that comes up and matches your skill set? Thanks for the great insight!!
Thank you for watching! Totally, I think it's a great practice to send that kind of email, it shows a lot about your character to be positive in the face of rejection! In this video at 6:28 I really like that as a starting point of the kind of message to write.
Self Made Millennial i did and sent it last week and no response from either HR or hiring manager. Im guessing they are still interviewing. I have to believe if they chose someone else they would have responded either way. Id hope.
@@marianacaglioti8989 Employers have stopped telling the Nos no. Some tell you if your thank you is very good and they feel like they owe you additional information. If they are not that impressed, you will not hear about the NO(look up employers now ghosting applicants)
I got the bad news but my question is: I work in the Hotel industry, I am thinking of going back to introduce myself to the HR department of the place that said no to see if that might work. A couple of months from now. Good idea?
Following up after an interview is bullshit! The ball should be in their court to get back to the candidate at that point. No job, especially a minimum wage job, should be worth that much effort to get!
generally, it's useless to follow up so many times the hiring manager knows when will come back to the candidate he/she wants to hire some of these videos are useful, but some of them are garbage
Hi Millenial, thank you for your great videos! I wanted to ask on whether I should start a new email chain with the follow up letter, or continue from the initial ''hi we would like to interview you'' conversation, or from my 'thank you' letter? Also, does it mean anything if I didn't receive a response to my 'thank you' letter? Thanks!
Hi Madeleine, I would really appreciate your insight on wether to wait or send them a message. I applied for a grad role, made it through to a one-way interview, then an aptitude test. I took this test last Monday 21st and then received an email last Friday 25th thanking me for completing the test and they'll be in touch this week. It is now Wednesday 30th (end of day) and i'm wondering if I should keep waiting or send an email to follow up about next steps. I'm also wondering if I did horribly on the aptitude test (it was hard) would they normally reject you pretty quick? Wondering what your thoughts are on this . Thanks!
@@SelfMadeMillennial hello. I really like your videos it helps a lot. I did an interview and the computer was not letting me continue my documents. So the hiring manager told me he will call me on Friday. It's Tuesday and haven't heard of him. Should I go up there and ask him do I have the job. Or what should I do?
@@talexymyshell1363 Hi Talexy, follow up with the hiring manager as if your friend never said that. Continue as if you have the job and follow up ASAP with the hiring manager to see if he can talk. I recommend using the emails I've laid out here in this free download: eepurl.com/geOF2H
Is there a way to get companies to give you the real feedback? What I mean is that most times they just cover themselves by saying "Not the right fit." or "We are going in a different direction." I find it hard to get some really good feedback that will help me in the next interview.

Hello, Madeleine and folks! Hope you're safe. So, THEY RESPONDED! Should I KEEP THE CONVERSATION ON, to NOT lose the loop of the e-mail? OR Should I NOT REPLY WITH "THANK YOU", AND SAVE this message for the NEXT FOLLOW UP (3-5 business days)? 1- TO THE HR - I thanked and asked about next steps! They responded saying "until the end of the week". 2- TO THE HIRING MANAGER - I thanked and asked nothing! I just sent a piece of work of interest. They responded "how nice! thank you!".
I appreciate this video! When would you reccommend to follow Up after a job offer and you are in the hiring process? After you already signed the offer last week and contacted them early today
@@SelfMadeMillennial Thank you for responding! Yes, but I actually heard back today and they said its actually the drug test taking long to process. How long do those usually take to process? Does it look bad it is taking long to process?

I WAS given a time frame they would get back to me, End of the Week. Should I follow up in any way Thursday the day before Friday? They were checking my references so I think I am going to get an offer.
Thanks so much for the info. Can I still follow up with hiring manager? Hiring manager told me that the company recruiter will follow up with me in one or two weeks.
Andres Sandoval I recommend morning (but not too early, especially if they are in a different time zone). But really, just do trial and error (experiment with different times) or ask them when is best to call.
This may sound silly, but are recruitment managers & hiring managers the same? I’m currently in contact with a recruiting manager and want to follow up so I want to make sure I follow up correctly.
Possibly not...is their job title “Recruitment Manager” in that case, they are more like HR. “Hiring manager” is an informal term and does not reflect someone’s professional title.
Hello! I interviewed on Sunday and she said we will follow up toward the end of the week... should I follow up on Thursday, Friday or Monday? I think I was one of the 1st to interview, on zoom(ugh), 3 managers and its a big company. I don't want them to forget about me, what do you think?
I had a follow up about my interview this is what the HR said “Thanks for reaching out. We are still in the early stages of the interviewing process for our Teller position. Once we finish going through all applications, we will then move to the next stage. At that time, we will reach out if we're interested in moving forward. Thanks.” Is that a good sign it’s been 3 days since then what should I do .Havent heard back from them , Thank You
Hello Madeline, is it appropriate, if I don't have email addresses of the panel of interviewers, to look them up online and email them with a follow up email, AFTER the interview, thanking them and briefly clarifying the points about my experience, that I forgot to mention during the interview? Thank you so much for your reply!
Awesome video and pointers. I have a question about the hiring process at MOST big companies. Is the last stop/interview usually with the hiring manager in the hiring process? Thanks.
@@SelfMadeMillennial Appreciate the reply... Hopefully I'll find out. Had an interview with an in house recruiter at a large company on Monday. She told me that I seemed to be a perfect fit for the position and that the next step would be the hiring manager contacting me for an interview. I know it's only been 4 days, but the HARDEST part is waiting, thanks again! 🤞
Hi. Is it alright to include in the follow up email some further explanation to some points you think you missed in the interview and to convince the hiring manager more to hire you? is that appropriate?
I've done this before...where I said something in the interview that I wanted to clarify. I recommend doing this only if it will take a few sentences (not many paragraphs). So be concise, you've got this!
I sent the thank you emails. And I got a response from 1 of the interviewers. She said the HR person would contact me this week for next steps....but nothing yet. Tomorrow is Friday. I thought I'd send the HR person a follow email tomorrow asking about next steps...and I happened to be put of state but will be back next week and mention that? What do you think? Or anyone else?

But haven't replied back yet, it's been 4 days now after the 2nd follow up. Can you please explain what happens once they say they'll get back to me after reaching out to the hiring manager and the team? What are the steps they take internally?
I interviewed with them they told me to send reference which I did. They told me they’d let me know either way by Friday came Monday I send a follow up email. Still no response what should I do?
I interview for an engineering internship on December 17th. I followed up with an email and a handwritten letter. I was told I should expect a formal offer by January 11th. On January 21st, they told me they'd "let me know when they have an update on the position as soon as they can." It is February 4th and I have received nothing! Should I follow up even though it is for a summer internship? Thank you Madeline!
Hi Morgan, YES keep following up - you're getting responses that are good, and most importantly, not "no." They like you! I know it sounds crazy, but we ended up giving an internship to a student who followed up 12 times. We responded to him a lot like this, with timeline adjustments and not ready to commit, and he stayed persistent. Also especially since this is for the summer...if you're in the US that means summer is still a while away so they probably do not have urgency for this. But no matter which country you're in, follow up! Good job!
@@SelfMadeMillennial I did! Turns out the HR person switched roles in the company. The new HR lady told me I should know by Wednesday! I also got a phone interview with another company! Hi Madeline, I know the value of sending a relevant project or past work from your previous employer, but does it come off as slightly desperate to send one on a last email attempt to a hiring manager? I went through 4 interviews, with the last one over 2 weeks ago. Each interviewer enjoyed speaking with me and I was referred by a friend.
Follow up question to my follow up question! Now you reached out to HR or the Hiring Manager after the deadline they gave you asking where they're at in the interview process and you still don't hear back. To me this mean they're no longer considering you, so do you send one final email per my question below? And the 3 to 5 days rule still applies? Thank you Madeline!
If you follow up and don't hear back I'd recommend following up 2 more times (I have a rule: 3 times, and then let it go). I would make every email assume that they are incredibly busy, not that you have been rejected. So in this case (where you never hear back) I wouldn't do the farewell email.
AsiteStun yes if you are calling then ask for whoever would have the answers about next steps. Try morning, if that doesn’t work try a different time. It depends on what type of business it is.

I followed up with them the following monday and i havent heard back from them, should I sent another follow up?. What if they did not give a timeline? I asked about the next steps and was told the initial recruiter I spoke to would email me requesting a list of professional references? I felt the interview went well, but I’m thinking that this is a bad sign.
Hi MM! In this time of social distancing, does the timeline for following up change at all? I had a phone interview and I’m waiting to hear about the next step which would be in person. Assuming folks, are either postponing or making interviews virtual, would you still recommend waiting 5 days or reaching out sooner to clarify! Thanks and stay safe!!!

I send a email & never got response back.
If they told me it might take 2 weeks because of other candidates being interviewed, but a different company reached out to me with an offer and i need an answer sooner than later, should I contact the original company sooner than 2 weeks?
I really hope I get this job I need it

did you get it?
So true
Thank you this helps. I appreciate it. More power.
Did they end up following up?
So it's like a fucking game I waited a whole week and I poured my heart out in that interview and no one is answer and replying and I might just give up that's some bullshit
Good to know I've taken the apt steps. Fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞 I'm applying for the only role of it's kind in my industry.
Jonathan Easterling wow wishing you the best. I’m rooting for you!
@@SelfMadeMillennial mahalo!! I'll keep you posted and share some of the extra steps I took during the process.
@@je3917 Excellent, looking forward to it!

I actually saved that as an example for myself when I first watched this video! Thanks :)
Very helpful. Thank you.
Should you follow up with the recruiter or first person who interviewed you who told you there would be a second interview with ceo?
What if hiring manager responds ny saying “ we are still conducting interviews and we will get back to you in a few weeks once a decision is made”.
Mariana Caglioti I would check in in 2 weeks to inquire how the process is going if I hadn’t heard back yet
Self Made Millennial i did and sent it last week and no response from either HR or hiring manager. Im guessing they are still interviewing. I have to believe if they chose someone else they would have responded either way. Id hope.
This is a common practice I learnt it’s a No !
Good idea?
Thanks ....great tips 👌🏽
Following up after an interview is bullshit! The ball should be in their court to get back to the candidate at that point. No job, especially a minimum wage job, should be worth that much effort to get!
generally, it's useless to follow up so many times
the hiring manager knows when will come back to the candidate he/she wants to hire
some of these videos are useful, but some of them are garbage
Helpful and practical content 👍
What if you have had multiple rounds of interview and then they don't respond at all? Pretty good sign, right?
Hi Millenial, thank you for your great videos! I wanted to ask on whether I should start a new email chain with the follow up letter, or continue from the initial ''hi we would like to interview you'' conversation, or from my 'thank you' letter? Also, does it mean anything if I didn't receive a response to my 'thank you' letter? Thanks!
I also didn’t get a response to my thank you emails either so I’d really like to know what @selfmademillenial suggests
Thanks!

I have a question. What's your recommendation on when to send out a thank you letter if the company has given you a timeline of when to hear back?
Always as soon as possible, within 24 hours. Thank you note and a follow up email are different, a timeline shouldn't affect a thank you note.
@@SelfMadeMillennial hello. I really like your videos it helps a lot. I did an interview and the computer was not letting me continue my documents. So the hiring manager told me he will call me on Friday. It's Tuesday and haven't heard of him. A friend of mine that works there said that the hiring manager is not hiring me because I was too quiet. But on my email says I got the job it's just that I have to finish the paper work.

I actually gave legitimate feedback and people couldn’t handle it! You can still ask though! Here’s my experience with telling candidates feedback: www.linkedin.com/pulse/i-told-job-applicants-why-were-rejected-disaster-heres-madeline-mann
Wonderful. Thank you.

Hi. If you don’t have good contact info or forgot to ask during the interview, what is the best way to go about getting it?
Great job! Follow up with HR after the time has elapsed that they gave you
Should send a thank you message after 1st interview.?
I appreciate this video! When would you reccommend to follow Up after a job offer and you are in the hiring process? After you already signed the offer last week and contacted them early today
Hi Martina! Let me make sure I understand your question: did the company extend an offer, you signed it, and you haven’t heard from them since?
@@SelfMadeMillennial Thank you for responding! Yes, but I actually heard back today and they said its actually the drug test taking long to process. How long do those usually take to process? Does it look bad it is taking long to process?
Martina Estrada I recommend asking them how long you should expect it to take.
6:48, I still think that's a long farewell email. I don't even reply to rejection emails unless I make it to the final round. 5:48, Also, about that guy who followed up with 6 emails after getting rejected. Have some dignity man! Pull yourself together. There are other jobs out there.
ominous450 just long enough for them to be so kind as to reject her a second time!
How long has it been?
Is it appropriate to go visit the store again after dropping off your resume? And asking them about your job application?
I see so many videos about how to be a good candidate but no videos about how recruiters could be more human and understanding of people’s situation.
excellent super helpful
susie chen thank you for watching!
What’s the best time of day to call? Thanks!
Andres Sandoval I recommend morning (but not too early, especially if they are in a different time zone). But really, just do trial and error (experiment with different times) or ask them when is best to call.
Thank you!
SO good!

Hi, I just finished virtual interview yesterday. Should I send a thank you email to them?
It's okay, I found your video already 😂th-cam.com/video/HZw-DY6ryQo/w-d-xo.html
Wonderful!
Is it a good option to follow up on LinkedIn???
This may sound silly, but are recruitment managers & hiring managers the same? I’m currently in contact with a recruiting manager and want to follow up so I want to make sure I follow up correctly.
Possibly not...is their job title “Recruitment Manager” in that case, they are more like HR. “Hiring manager” is an informal term and does not reflect someone’s professional title.
i love it!
So glad!
Hello! I interviewed on Sunday and she said we will follow up toward the end of the week... should I follow up on Thursday, Friday or Monday? I think I was one of the 1st to interview, on zoom(ugh), 3 managers and its a big company. I don't want them to forget about me, what do you think?
What about to apply to other the position in the same company?
Question: the hiring manager was not in that day so the production manager did the interview. Should I send it to them, production manager?
I had a follow up about my interview this is what the HR said “Thanks for reaching out. We are still in the early stages of the interviewing process for our Teller position. Once we finish going through all applications, we will then move to the next stage. At that time, we will reach out if we're interested in moving forward. Thanks.” Is that a good sign it’s been 3 days since then what should I do .Havent heard back from them , Thank You
Curious to hear how this turned out!
Yes! Here are more of my thoughts on that: th-cam.com/video/HZw-DY6ryQo/w-d-xo.html
Awesome video and pointers. I have a question about the hiring process at MOST big companies. Is the last stop/interview usually with the hiring manager in the hiring process? Thanks.
It can be, or the boss’s boss. Or in some cases, the CEO
@@SelfMadeMillennial thanks!
Let's say I reached out to the HR POC and they said they don't have not made a decision yet but they will reach back out to me after reaching out to the hiring manager and the team. But haven't replied back yet, it's been 4 days now after the 2nd follow up. Can you please explain what happens once they say they'll get back to me after reaching out to the hiring manager and the team? What are the steps they take internally?
What would be an appropriate subject

Thank you for taking the time to make me feel good :)
HR ☺️
Sent an email going on 4 days no response.... They this was my 3rd interview... had the initial interview on the phone, virtual interview, and the phone interview all different people and they all said they are looking to hire quickly... advice?
Hi Madeline,
I know the value of sending a relevant project or past work from your previous employer, but does it come off as slightly desperate to send one on a last email attempt to a hiring manager?
When I call do I ask for manger ? In the morning ?
AsiteStun yes if you are calling then ask for whoever would have the answers about next steps. Try morning, if that doesn’t work try a different time. It depends on what type of business it is.
