When I was taught painting as a teen the teacher told me to cover the whole canvas as quickly as I could with colour and values, then paint. It served me well. I do love the grisaille technique as used also by Van Eyck.
The dry brushing reminds me of what charcoals sketching does to a drawing. It's very unique. Thank you. I have never attended an art class before. To learn about a technique that I was ready doing and find out today it's the same technique that a well known artist has used from many years ago, simply made me gasp for air. I am so glad you have created this self portrait and taught the technique. Thank you.
Thanks you Daniel for the excellent demonstration and explanation of how to work a grisaille. I learned more from this video than many others that I've watched. Love your work!
While watching and listening, I was speechless but my heart was jumping up and down and all around with joy and delight. But, I hung in there til the end of your video. Learned quite a lot more than what I have picked up from others. Your communication skills/explanations were great too! Thank you so much. :) :) :) Wow!
I was researching the Grisaille last week. Today this video came up and I was enthralled. Thank you for letting me see how the Masters might have used this technique.
Wow! Wonderful demo! Thanks for the video! This is how I paint and I love it. It gives you time to work each area without rushing. Lots of patience, observation and determination. Congratulations! Absolutely great work! I wish you the best and much success with the channel. It will grow fast! Blessings and be safe. New subscriber!
Thank you so much! This is one of the first paintings I did in the Venetian method and really enjoyed it. In the past I have used aspects of it but not rigidly adhered to it throughout the entire painting. I don’t keep my process the same in every painting and really enjoy experimenting, but there are aspects of this method that I am incorporating further into my experiments.
@@danielkrobbins6644 yes, continue experimenting to see what results you get. This is the only way we learn. What do you think of the Flemish method? I like both. What are your thoughts about Alla Prima? You are doing a fantastic job. I hope you do a still life sometime. Eric Bosick uses the Venetian method, very interesting. His studio is in Florida. Check him out. I’m glad I found your channel. Blessings and be safe. I wear gloves too. It has been said that paints are toxic only if you eat it. I’m ok with paints but not with the medium so, I wear the gloves mainly to protect myself from the medium and when mixed with the paint it becomes toxic. Anyway, keep up with the great work and looking forward to see more videos. Best wishes.
I searched for you on IG and added you to my large follow list. I hope to see more videos in the future. You have a nice dry, soothing style that’s easy to follow. You should up your production value some and showcase your personality. Best to you, irregardless.
Nice work man, this is more of a imprimatura technique than a venetian Grisaille correct? The venetian Grisaille isnt it where the underlayer is much darker and richer and then they scumble and cross hatch lead white to build the lights instead of pick out...? but its a wonderful result.
Thank you! The pallet I use is plexiglass with a neutral gray paper over white foam core, which I tape around the edges to keep it all together. I explain my colors in the glazing video.
Isn't this more of a Florentine method--strict linearity and modeling without color vs a Venetian--direct painting with more accidental brushwork and use of "color" by which they meant both value arrangements AND chromatic trickery? Think Bronzino vs Veronese. I'm sure there's crossover, just wondering.
How can I learn to DRAW like that? I understand the tonal technique but your drawing indicates where the colour goes and I'd like to be able to create that. Thanks.
Check out my drawing videos! The method I use is called the comparative measurement method, which you can also find other videos and literature explaining the process.
I am actually using burnt umber, but more specifically it is transparent brown iron oxide. The brand I am using is Winsor and Newton, but you can find transparent brown iron oxide in nearly every oil paint brand.
You need to rehearse your lessons and use a script. I lost interest in the rambling disjointed style of speaking. It's a shame because it's an interesting topic.
I loved this style ,it gives me reassurance to experiment . I enjoyed the relaxed freestyle ,not sure I would be inspired listening to a scripted lesson . This method is so new to me ,Im going in for a second free veiwing .So many choices ,so little time .
Was having painters block, watched your production and immediately returned to my studio with inspiration to paint, using the venetion approach
This is the best tutorial on grisaille that I've watched. Thanks so much for this!

This is truly step by step especially for me a new painter. Thank you.

The exact way to mix the paints and blend is so valuable to me, and the process. Appreciate you. Subscribed.
Your method is simple and systematic. Perfect for learning. Great videos.
Thank you so much!
I subbed because he used a sock. That is a boss move.
Great instruction video! I look at a lot of these and this actually taught me some important fundamentals! Thank you from Singapore!
Fantastic yet "simple" ;) I learned a lot. Thank you and looking forward to next sessions on your channel.
This is a great video, so brilliantly instructive and a clear explanation as it went along.Thank you so much!
I'm learning both techniques right now with guidance. This was really helpful. Thank you
I was not expecting the music but I'm glad it was there, good video!
Thanks! I’m learning as i go.
thank you so much, your explanation is very clear. I wish we could see your model simultaneously.
One of the best instructive videos I have had the pleasure to watch. Please please make more videos.
Thank you! I’ll see what i can do.
Really good demo and explanation. Congrats and thanks so much.
thank you for this tutorial and for all the details and your thought process . this will help me a lot as i transition from acrylic to oils
Such an exciting tutorial. Thank you. I found you on and I am very happy that I did. Looking forward to watch next tutorials. 😍
When you have a great subject matter to start with, your painting is going to look good🦊
Very good video. Very informative. Clearly explained. Thank you for sharing. Jose from Melbourne Australia
Very very interesting I didn’t know about this grisaille method , thank you very much to share your knowledge

Nicely composed!!!
Really nice demo of the "wipe" method! Great info here, thanks!
You’re welcome 😊
I moved my head to the side so as to get the shadow off the canvas. Enjoyed the lesson, thank you!
Did you do the sketch with oils to or did you use a pencil of some sort?
Great information and instruction . . . thank you for doing what you do!
Thank you for the kind words!
Great video! I hope you post more in the future.
Thanks Cameron. I’m sure more will come, but I can’t tell you when.
Good stuff. Great technique.
Thank you for the video and explanation! Thumbs up!
Amazing method and great class thanx a ton ☺☺
Good painting advice.

Nice work colour superb beautiful
Sweet jesus! That is UNrefined? Your attention to detail must be on some level I'm unable to comprehend.
Very nice video, and good explanation!!
Your drawing looks like Superman :)
It's probably considered cheating but is it possible to use acrylic for the 1st step here so it dries quicker? Thanks
yes, and it is not cheating
Thank you very much for sharing!
This video is awesome
Hi, i'm Jared. How did you draw the outline of your first sketch? I wonder.
Superb! I want to ask you.... what have you used to make the initial sketch?
Think you might enjoy my paintings. Max Ferguson - Painter
what did you use graphite or charcoal for the drawing?
You are a wonderful artist, I would like the knowledge of the paint palette you are using to get the same desired results.
Thank you! The pallet I use is plexiglass with a neutral gray paper over white foam core, which I tape around the edges to keep it all together. I explain my colors in the glazing video.
Loved this video and have subscribed, but what solvent are you using ?
Thank you! I’m using Gamsol.
nice work.
Really excellent teaching.Great videos!
Hello can i use acrylic paint as well for the underpainting? Later ik continue with water mixable oil paint. thanks for the reaction.
Yes, acrylic will work fine.
Tip at 5:50, I wished someone had told me that when I first started out long ago.
Thank you, I learned a lot
Great video
who knew socks would be so useful
Is this on linen or canvas? Gesso or oil ground?
Nice technique.

Has he explained the kinds of brushes and paints he uses for this?
5:30 why not use bigger brush? 🤔
Does Gisselle mean monochromatic?
Спасибо 🤗

traced from a photograph using an opaque projector
@@DrWhom sigh. There’s literally a video where he shows how he did it. You know that, right?
really useful.thank you.
Would be helpful to say in title that this is oil painting.
Hi, Thank you for the nice lesson. What do you use for under drawing on the tainted canvas ?
I believe I was using it kind of under painting Brown made by Gamlin. Burnt umber would also work great.
Raw Umber or Umber Light, Brand ??
I am actually using burnt umber, but more specifically it is transparent brown iron oxide. The brand I am using is Winsor and Newton, but you can find transparent brown iron oxide in nearly every oil paint brand.
How did you learn all of this? I’d love this knowledge
You can use any color?
Why do you wait gloves?
Why don't you use a roller to put the wash on?
Because then i would need to clean a roller.
This should be called the sock method 😀
😂
Thank you
Thank goodness for the Venetians, or it would be curtains for all of us.
Surprised you didn’t put your darks in first
Pronounced: Gri-zal-ly
The minute I notice the painter wearing rubber gloves I switch off .
This for sale
He ehe! I have a lot of socks that don`t mach
And they all went to heaven with all the pens as well.
You are so handsome!!!😍
Thanks…
A "grisaille" would be gray. That's just an underpainting.
grayscale underpainting is totaly not nessesary , just go right on whit the colours :)
The ear is too low. The top of your ear is equal to eye brow. Otherwise, really good
It depends on your point of view
No… I is not my point of view.. it’s anatomy. Look around
@ google “view face from below”
are you Canadian lol....Ive never seen someone make a work of art wearing a plaid shirt
Too heavy-handed to start with.
Yes, these videos were recorded for a college art program.
Почему только в перчатках?Надо было и намордник надеть.
