I've been painting for close to 60yrs and used to copy a lot...this would have taken me about 3 mths.. and still not happy with it.. I enjoyed watching it and thank you. Repaired my memory and I may start something very soon.
@@kemalikemali9367 What? Are you saying you don’t like the beauty that is modern art? What about the banana taped to a wall? What about the poop smear on canvas? What about the blank unpainted white canvas??? Those are all beautiful pieces of art! The masters could never hope to achieve such perfection!
Chiaroscuro is the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting. So the grisaille is a chiaroscuro technique. It has been a common technique to glaze over an underpainting since Van Eyck's time and only late 18/19 century painting used alla prima technique. .
Very good work. One of the most accurate copies I've seen. I don't think I'd be happy starting on such a dark base, but it definitely seems to work here.
It's a good thing that this gentleman is such an excellent painter because I'm not so sure how much more of that heavy breathing I could take in the first part of this video.
Excellent job. This is how I taught myself to paint many years ago. The grisaille method is an oldie but a goodie. There are certain pearlescent greys that cannot be obtained any other way.
Thank you for showing the difficult intricacy that is the technique and layering effect of high shine and low light points . People don't realize how the artists' minds eye transmits to the hand what to do after much practicing .
Wow... I've read about this technique (or a similar one) that was used by painters in the renaissance, I think, where they would start a painting with monochrome colors... Cool to see it actaully being applied... And by such a master! Fantastic work!
Thank you! Honestly, painting Ike this - in stages, first shading, then color temperature, then color and texture, then atmospheric effects - is easier, than taking care of all these at the same time with post-impressionistic technique
I ve never seen a most beautiful and gentle man in my life than the artist! I ll keep his hologram in my dreams and I might be lucky to meet someone that resembles his light
@ of course it’s genius it just wasn’t the traditional old master way of painting a portrait, just because one artist used a similar technique it doesn’t mean it’s an old master technique.
Сергей, безусловно, молодец, и хороший преподаватель. Эту технологию перенёс на современные материалы не он, а реставраторы Эрмитажа, которые впоследствии поделились с преподавателями Глазуновской Академии Художеств.
Thanks for sharing your remarkable talents. The monochrome approach at the beginning brought back memories of when I used to dabble with acrylics. I always found that I painted better looking portraits of people/animals using that approach. But the books/magazines I used for reference to aid my hobby never used that method, so I gave that up thinking it was not the way to do things. You've got me itching now, wanting to reach out for my old brushes.
These are the techniques and effects of the old masters that bring the use of light and shadow to its end result. The drama achieved by this result is a style I've always loved for its classical appearance and its ability to last for centuries. When done right this time tested alchemy using the fat over lean rule , as well as the measured applications of the pigments and mediums assure an outcome that will remain bright and allow the light to penetrate the layers adding to its visual impact. I really enjoyed seeing a young master achieve this example of the classical style so beautifully. Well done.

Who's the real master...the painter who painted the original or the forger who can duplicate a painting so well that no one can tell the difference? The former...for coming up with the composition. This guy has the process down to a science. Very nice.
forgery of paitings from before the XIX century are hard to make, when even the canvas was hand woven. And we have x-rays and tests to show the materials used, even in the underpaintings. Also provenance is a big deal for the big museums. You would have to have access to lots of materials and knowledge for a specific period/artist. Things get shady when there are art dealers and galleries involved, specially auction houses.
Very interesting thank you. I live in the South of Spain. We don't even have life drawing here. I wish I could go somewhere to learn all this about colour.
it was actually quite a traditional way back in the days. It's fascinating how white paint is being mixed with ochre, and a thick layer of it in highlights looks warm, but in mid-tones, where the layer is thin and is basicly rubbed into the surface, same color looks cool, almost bluish.

People often demonstrate Grisaille as just a single layer of grays. But applying it per chiaroscuro is a revelation. Thank you.

I wasnt referring to the artist himself but there is definitely heavy breathing, maybe the classical guitarist.
