    • @giakhanhthehinhcoban
      @giakhanhthehinhcoban 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      fjf sjdnx i think you are being too sensitive for what people say. It is the 21st century already, there is no slavery of black people anymore

    • @ArnaudSibille
      @ArnaudSibille 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @fjf sjdnx At that time, when you were black, you were not killed on the street, you know. You were working hard somewhere for poor wages, 'cause here in France we were proud of having "abolished" slavery (I guess we have to see that slavery still exists today, but according to standards deemed "acceptable" by all these people who never care no matter the colour of their skins). If you were black, you probably would never have had the chance to walk these streets because all the work you had to carry out; I find there's something very similar today with the poor. By the way, the politicians are still very proud to say France is the country of the Human Rights, which is... a complete nonsense considering what life here is like.
      Anyway, I guess now I don't have to tell Pietro Channels that he should be wary of his wishes; I'm no Genie but the life at these paintings' times was far from idyllic when you didn't belong to the wealthy. It still isn't: don't go to Paris if you're poor. Living here as a poor worker or as a student is like being in a cage, which utterly prevents you from enjoying the good view.
      Something of note though: if you were a successful musician or painter, life could be ok. They lived in the poorest neighborhoods in Paris (Montmartre, you've all seen Amélie Poulain), which has become the most expensive neighborhoods in the city (with l'Île de la Cité). It tells something of the power of culture and how the wealthy, like the rest in life, try to get a firm hold on it, as they do about any power; but that doesn't make them artists. Sometimes the world is a little bit fair. xD

    Don't let this music make you feel sad, for that is not why it was composed.
    Satie lived in tiny apartments in Paris and had little or no money for most of his life. Nevertheless, he spent his days visiting friends, socialising and drinking (heavily) in Paris' cabarets and cafés, annoying and confusing people he disliked (which he found very amusing), and generally doing as he pleased. He had strange habits and interests, always dressed impeccably, and changed his outlook on politics, religion and music constantly.
    Despite his unusual life, he was happy, and had all he needed or wanted: The company of friends, the love of music and art (and the opportunity to discuss them) and alcohol.
    Satie died of cirhossis of the liver after a life in which he had never become one of the 'great' composers. However, the impact he had on his friends and contemporaries (including Debussy, Picasso, Cocteau and Ravel) was massive. Make no mistake, his legacy is still seen today. He revolutionised an understanding and usage of tonality and harmony that inspired a new school of French composers. Aspects of his outlook on life and some of his unusual mannerisms were later realised in Dadaism.
    So do not despair at hearing this music, and do not attach it to the struggles of life. It was written from a place of contentedness, friendship, and inspiration. No matter how difficult your situation is, whether you can change it or not, enjoy the parts of life that make us feel. Create your own special legacy, with whatever you have before you.

      THANK YOU for this wonderfully informative comment. This music brings to me a deep joy...as the progressions and turns carry one from the deepest, enfolding darkness to contentment and rightness. Joy and exaltation! Patience, particularly. I love it SOMUCH! And I am now not only inspired by his phrases, but yours as well!

    Les notes s'écoulent, l'une après l'autre, la vitesse augmente ou diminue, avec force ou légèreté. Ni tristesse, ni joie, ni nostalgie, une source de musique, un bain de sons purs, rafraîchissant.
    C'est cela Sati pour moi, depuis fort longtemps. L'écouter me fait changer de dimension et je ne suis plus que ces notes.

      we all know that feeling. it usualy feels like it was a better time/place. its a romaticized Version of the reality in our heads.
      its what we would like it to be. the reality was of course different.
      but still nothing wrong with letting those feelings in and enjoying them. i get this nostalgic feeling often.
      usualy because of music and movies. sometimes arciteture. its nice. but i wouldnt wanna live there in reality. a holiday in the past would be nice tho

    It's funny how most of non-french people sees Paris. They think of a beautiful city, filled by love and poetry. But has a french guy, i can say it's pretty far from the truth. Paris is cold, melancholic, gigantic, and filled to the brim with social tentions. It's a very morose city. It's the capital of a Country that has gone through a lot and still his.

      It's like any other city, as someone who emigrated to the US I can see how everyone romanticizes living somewhere else but once reality sets in you're able to see things for what they really are. People back in Mexico wish they lived in the US, Americans wish they lived in Switzerland, Canada, Japan, France, etc. But I bet those cities are the same if not harder to adapt specially for someone who doesn't speak the language big cities seem cool and glamorous but most of the time living in them can be really boring and isolating .

    When listening to this, I’m immersed in the experience of my old self preparing to leave for Norway - the first time I was going anywhere outside of France alone, and the further I’d ever go from where I lived. I’d listen to this the evenings before my departure, thinking about my dear friends, just before I’d make new ones and put my life on a completely different path. This is the music that accompanied me as I was preparing to change, and changing. I’d discover a lot about myself and others: other people’s stories and worlds, as well as my own : my ability to love, to protect, to lead, but also my mental and physical strength. Every evening of the Nordic winter, after a long day of work and lifting, soaked by the rain, before going to see my friends I’d stop by this old piano in the basement of the student housing, and play this, while contemplating this adventure I was only starting : my adulthood.

The present is the best time to ever be alive as a human. Modern healthcare, sanitation, equality, human rights, civil liberties, lack of wars, ability to travel, communicate and more are the best they have ever been. Don't worry about the past seeming great, if you spent one day there you would realize all the stuff from today you'd miss.

      as much as I share those feelings with you, I must add that those simpler times were less comfortable than what we are living now. Our lives are much easier than before but much more complicated and lonely. The price we pay for progress. The new technology does not connect people, but ironically does quite the opposite. And we must not forget those days there was only 1/3rd of the population which must add to the tranquility and rushlessness of those days.

      Andrew White I am very sorry to hear of your father's passing. My father passed away in April of 2018 so I understand your sorrow. My father was a musician/producer/engineer so music was a huge part of our lives. Over the years music has helped me make it through some good and bad times. I've always looked to music for comfort and I'm glad you found some comfort in this music when you needed it most. God bless you, your father and your family.

I was pregnant at that time... Nowadays, that baby is a 4-year-old girl who enjoys Satie (says it makes her feel relaxed) and Gymnipédies are her favourite piano compositions!

      Gavin B. We do, but we don’t perceive it as we go through life linear. Our life is infinite, but our current selves die at some point and thus why death is inevitable because time consumes energy that allows it to pass through. Push and pull. In and out. Around and around. All of it is just energy cycling. We’re all on borrowed time.
