26 foot pounds! That's the torque 1Aauto used in their video for the steering wheel nut torque. Their video was for a Camry and alot of similarities from your video I noted. I liked your video because I have a 2000 Sienna LE with intermittent horn blowing! Also you made sure with the blue tape, the alignment of all those little parts not letting things get twisted. 1Aauto didn't address the rust issue, which I probably have, so am glad you showed how to clean that up. So thanks RW for sharing those two videos this will keep me out of the junkyard one more weekend.

Thanks for the kind words, Daniel. Torque specs vary a lot if you Google for them. I have found the lug nut torque from 76 to over 100 for my Sienna. Owners manual says 77.
I found an online site that says 37 ft lbs. under 'service manual', no date, but under owners manual it says 2010 to 2023.
      www.tsienna.net/installation-1407.html
But I also found a Toyota TSB that says 98-2000 is the same 37 ft. lbs. and NOT 26

Intermittent horn (if you aren't touching/pressing the horn pad) can be those contacts you see after removing the air bag. If they are too close then just turning the steering wheel can make the horn blow.
I was lucky to find a small post in a Sienna forum somewhere. There weren't any instructions, just someone saying that's where their problem was.😃

UPDATE: I can confirm that cleaning the steering column bearings as Rich describes in his video did fix my Sienna horn after ~8 years of intermittent working. The stealership wanted to replace clock spring, which tested continuity just fine. Thanks again for sharing! / 2000 Sienna here, I saved your previous video, just never got around to trying. Now I’m so glad this one popped back up in my suggested video list. Now it’s time to try! Thanks for taking the time to help many others!!

My first take on rhe repair was to clean up the contacts in the steering wheel under the airbag. I thought that fixed it but only days later it was happening again. After a lot of Google searching I found a short text post about the bearing in the shaft. That has proven to be the solution so I made a new video.
      Thanks for watching 🙂

Wow, Rich Ward - great video! I am contemplating doing this repair and your video convinces me I will be successful. I am trying to get the horn past inspection. When you explained the bearing issue this reminded me of a volume pot on a stereo and how one can sort of clean it up by just rotating it back and forth a few times. I suspected my Sienna horn is suffering from this corroded bearing issue, so, after seeing your video, I went out and rotated the steering wheel stop to stop several times while blowing the horn and, sure enough, it restored the functionality almost completely. I'll be curious to see how long it continues to work, but at least I can likely get thru my inspection and do the more comprehensive cleaning at a later date. When I get to it I'll be trying DeoxIT D5 in lieu of the CRC product since I already have some.

Tuner / cleaner is great for volume and station controls. Cleans up dirty connections and doesn't leave a residue. I used some on the channel selector on an old CB that had been in storage for 10 years. Everything sounded clear after that, easy fix.
The bearing in the steering column would probably get fixed by using WD-40 too, just about any cleaner to wash out that rust and make a good ground again. Mine is still working great, no issues. It saved me a bundle. I replaced the control module for the power door and saved another bunch of money. :-)

Hi, thx for the diligence to shoot this vid! It started to look discouragingly too complicated, but then i remembered succeeding at something that similarly looked too hard. But if i screw this up, i wont be able to drive lol!

My biggest fears were 1. Unable to remove and replace the steering wheel and 2. making a mess of the clock spring cable. The steering wheel came off rather easily and went back on without issue. I did put tape as markers to indicate the correct alignment. I really didn't have any problems at all making this repair. It went surprisingly well. It's been over 2 years now and the horn is still working just fine and the steering wheel hasn't come off. :-D Be careful with the air bag.
Now the power seat stopped working. I've made a video for that and found someone that had aftermarket parts that should be here soon. :-)

2000 Sienna here with same issues. Looking forward to trying this fix. Thank you sir for taking the time to document what you did. Hopefully it beats the $550 the dealership wanted for new clock spring.

The WD-40 spray fixed it for me. I've not had any horn problems since I did the repair. Just check those contacts first. If they look even halfway clean then the problem is most likely rust down in the steering column, preventing a good ground. If the horn is your only symptom then it's most likely not the clock spring. If your radio volume and other controls are impacted, then maybe it is, but I'd wager it's rust. Even if it turns out to be the clock spring, you're already there. Just get a new one, search online and compare prices. Be sure to put tape in the various areas so you put things back together in the same position.
Make sure you put something over the carpet to catch the rusty solvent coming out of the steering column. Good luck.

Thank you so much for posting this. I'm going to do this on my '99 tomorrow so I can get the van inspected. You mention checking manual for resetting the sunroof and door, I do not have a manual. Can you please explain what I will need to do. BTW the van we have has 265,000 miles. Got to love them Toyota's. Thanks Joe

Before I disconnect the battery I always make sure the moon roof is closed and the power door is closed. That way when you reconnect the battery they should work normally.
      POWER DOOR RESET:
Battery disconnected and reconnected; Do steps 6 to 10
Power door warning light stays lit though the door is closed; Do steps 1 to 10
      1. Turn off power sliding door (PWR DOOR OFF button depressed)
      2. Disconnect battery for 1 minute, then reconnect
      3. Close the sliding door by hand. (Step 3 can be done before step 2)
      4. Turn on the power sliding door by pressing PWR DOOR OFF button. (Red edge of button will now be visible.)
      5. Wait 5 seconds
      6. Open the sliding door by using one of the PWR DOOR switches or wireless remote
      7. Wait 3 seconds after the sliding door stops at fully opened position
      8. Close the sliding door by using one of the PWR DOOR switches or wireless remote
      9. Wait 3 seconds after the sliding door stops at the fully closed position
      10. Repeat steps from step 6 to step 9.
      MOON ROOF:
There is no reset in the owners manual. I found some results using Google, but it requires a manual closing of the door and some other things. Best to start with it closed or plan on visiting the Toyota dealership.

@@richward2288 Thank You. I will keep them closed. Reset seems complicated. Had to get the contact cleaner. Hoping to tackle it this week.

    • @richward2288
      @richward2288  5 ปีที่แล้ว

If your door and moon roof work OK, just close them. If you are just disconnecting the battery, for the door you would need to do only steps 6 to 10. It's really not all that difficult, but leaving them closed is the easiest way. Good luck with your repair.

@@richward2288 Finally did this yesterday and it now works perfectly thank you so much. I do have a question. Why pull the 15 amp fuse when your already disconnecting the battery?

    • @richward8776
      @richward8776 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@JoeAnshien the text that I found somewhere on the internet said to pull that fuse also. It's the one that controls the airbag. I figured it wouldn't hurt and I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy anyway.

To everyone, i just found this post as well if you dont want to go through the steering wheel. You can get at the bearing from underneath. Much simpler. At least for 2000 sienna not sure others. dr-fix-it.blogspot.com/2011/07/weekend-mechanic-repairing-2000-toyota.html?showComment=1625947731323&m=1#c416676214648455782

I had never done this before and didn't find it too difficult. I found a text reply from someone online and followed their lead. I had to buy the Torx tools, which weren't expensive. Go slow, take pictures before you take something off so you can reference where things were. Make sure you put something on the floor to catch the rusty WD-40. My horn has worked perfectly since I made this repair.
