I despise the Shadowhunters series (sorry Cassandra Clare). I just didn't like it. Its boring, predictable and just straight up not a good time for me...
I love your mantra here: we shouldn’t force ourselves to read books we don’t like. Interestingly enough, I really didn’t like six of crows (definitely an unpopular opinion). I almost DNFd the series, but I’m glad I continued, because I really liked Crooked Kingdom.
i read Six of Crows last year and I loved it at the time and immediately bought Crooked Kingdom. But then someone brought some criticism of it to my attention and I was like, “Yeah, that really turns me off from the series” and because I’m not really a fantasy reader I just never picked up Crooked Kingdom.
Ooooo what was the criticism if you don't mind me asking?? I was reading SOC before I was ever big on the internet so I didn't get into the SUPER hype and i didn't even know it was SUCH a huge series on booktube until I became a booktuber!
hello good morrow! i think you'd be intersted in my novel, "700 pages". "700 pages" describes in 700 pages a protagionist that looks into a portal of time and sees the beyond and all books that could be poetically written. in this portal the protagonist Leahcar sees the books that will not satiate their voluminous appetite and is able to DNF them before even starting them, thus saving time itself and also the world... loooool I read throne of glass and i didn’t buy celaena as an assassin either 😭 the fact that she’s FAMOUS as an assassin was so funny to me bec arent assassins supposed to be undercover/sneaky??? How is she supposed to be doing her job if everyone knows she’s super ~deadly~ like they’ll just run away dhfjkfjfkdk
this is LITERALLY THE BEST POINT!! i feel like if an assassin is famous by name then they're doing a bad job LMAO you can like know a famous assassin exists. like 'oooo the king has THE most POWERFUL assassin ever' but if you know that assassin's first and last name like what.......their whole government name...
uuh!! Love these type of videos!!! It's always happening to me reading another booktuber's favourite book and I end up not liking it as much. I always feel weird publishing a review of a book everybody loved and I hated xd. I actually really liked throne of glass but I never kept reading that series. I'm now reading crescent city after all this time and I'm enjoying it but it's not as good as everyone is saying ahah
The one SJM book Id consider reading is Crescent City HAHAH only because the cover is GORGEOUS but i’m waiting until the hype completely dies so I can form my own opinions
YES! Crooked kingdom was not good, I'm still mad about it. And yes, unfortunately the Truly devious romance is a thing in the last book as well... He's awful, I hate him. But I love this book-rant! 💜
I recently read A long way to a small angry planet, and I've been thinking I was gonna LOVE it for the longest time because of booktube, but I was so disappointed! I was so sad, but it was not my thing at all.. It was just so cheesy & just NO! 😑
Omg I feel so validated by how many people are saying they also don't like Truly Devious!! I loooooooved the novella I read from Becky Chambers so I want to rea A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet but I HAVE heard some really mixed reviews!
Give it a chance if you like Becky Chambers, it just was not my thing. But yeah, seems like a very divisive book! 🛸 And I'm still gonna read her novella, because I don't want to give up on her as a writer just yet ☺️
Big same on throne of glass. Bruh, no, now I’m nervous for Crooked Kingdom 👀I’ll just be over here pretending that Truly Devious didn’t hurt my heart 🥺
@@ShipwreckedLibrary hahaha it's okay! Different strokes for different folks, ma dude! I'll just be stroking Truly Devious every time I watch your videos now LMAO
I am always jealous of people who can DNF books. Honestly, I have read books and knew they were horrible in the first 30 pages but when I buy the book I feel like I have to finish it. Well at least you didn't name Dune. When someone rated it 7/10 I was like um I don't think I can subscribe to you anymore. LOL!
HAHAH I can't make myself hate read something because it just makes me hate reading and if I hate reading, who am I???? Reading is ALL I HAVE!! Dune is actually on my huge book bucket list. Cannot wait to finally get to that one.
omg you're SOOO smart i finished the entire tog series i hate myself, U COULD TAKE HERRRR - - ngl im not that interested in the darker shade series but i do wanna try v.e. schwab - LMAOO IM DEAD AT CK HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS ABOUT U - omg RACHAEL i read the first truly devious book thinking it was a standalone and when it finished i was like huh?? i think i might have to let that series go coz im so meh about book 1
I KNOW!! I have no idea why that's such a weird trend on booktube where we all sort of force ourselves to read the "hyped" books, because I want off this ride LOL I will only read books I'm actually interested in now
I didn’t like wayward series. I attempted book 1 twice and idk just could t get into it. And something forceful about the trans rep felt unnatural and it threw off the point of the story for me.
Oh, Wayward Children. It's such a highly specific series that tends to either really work for people, or really, really not. If you are interested in trying again, I would recommend book 6, Across the Green Grass Fields (which just came out this year). It felt a bit different than the rest of the series and can be read without having read the rest of the series.
I HAVE heard you can read the wayward children series out of order, so I might pick up another one when I can, but I want to make sure I'm reading it bc I wanna READ IT. Not to just get the serotonin boost for having finished a book!! It doesn't feel right to just rush through books just to get to wrap up a higher book count : ((
@@ShipwreckedLibrary Oh for sure, if you are just doing it for the serotonin boost, then feel free to run the other direction. Just if you wanted to just give it another shot. You can sort of read the series out of order.. the even numbered books all follow the kids in the past as they go through their door. Those can be read in any order. The odd numbered books are all present day and they really build on each other, so can't be read out of order.
I am literally DNFing The Bone Season today. I was assuming I would enjoy it but I guess not. Same goes for Nevernight (DNF) and sadly Mistborn. I really feel like hype has been ruining shit for me lately. ☹️

There have been times I’ve read a book and wondered if I even actually liked it or if it was just bc it’s a booktube fave that I even rated it highly
Also to answer your question everything Cassandra Clare, anything Jay Kristoff (I’ve only read the first book in both his most popular series) and I can’t stand him, and basically I’m not going to finish Throne of Glass either
I quite enjoyed Truly Devious, and then HATED The Vanishing Stair and I’m having such like guilt over not finishing the series but also I didn’t like it so I’m not doing it to myself!
I have dnf’d all of these series (except Nevernight) for pretty much all the same reasons. I’d say we have similar taste but I also hated Gideon the ninth so.........
Okay, straight up, Stevie legit forgives what's his name for everything he put her through because, and I quote "has a nice ass." The first two books of Truly Devious were fun to kind of poke fun at for me (like Mystery Theatre 3000), but the third book was just so bad. The big mystery is revealed in the middle of the book and the rest gets dragged out for a million years and then quickly resolved. It wasn't even fun to read for me. I was just livid for 98% of the book.
Omg I haven't heard a Mystery Theatre 3000 reference since I was a KID HAHAHAH Bummer that Stevie ends up still dating the weird rich pompous guy. I just am not a fan. I also hate that the mystery was going to take so long to solve. I'm just a fan of books that wrap up nicely. Even if it's a series, each book should stand on its own right?!
@@ShipwreckedLibrary Exactly! That's how I feel about first books of a series I did not like but everyone comes into the comments of my review with "just wait until book ______ it gets better then!" Like, no? The first book should be good to begin with so I'd actually *want* to get to book ______.
