When mike shinoda did fort minor or Chester Bennington did dead by sunrise or his work with stone temple pilots no one was calling them “former” linkin park members. It’s so much better for these artists to do another style of music they’re passionate about as a side project instead of trying to force their band members to go in that direction too when that’s not really their thing. Deftones have certainly had their range of sound but I never see them going so purely synth-pop as crosses pulls, so it’s really best chino has this side project so he’s not feeling stifled creatively.
At this time, however, the future of Deftones was undecided. The band was dormant for a bit after 2007, and again after Chi died. They had just started work on Gore at the time of this interview.
I think the interviewer asked a lot of questions that most fans wanted to hear. Most of the time, you get these horrible interviewers asking the same 'ol questions. It get's old. But this guy nailed it. He covered most of their career in 30 minutes. Cool video.
Locally here in Cleveland, this guy and show are douche bags. A lot of people hate his interviews, I see in other comments of other people as well, and they hate that he's clueless and an ass sometimes...but I actually think like you, it's a bit refreshing because this clueless guy asks questions you don't see. Like a newbie would approach the person talking to them gathering what they do, rather than someone who knows all about them and asks the same certain questions.
The thing I love about Chino is how he will add to notes being played on the instruments, not copy them The guitar will commonly play a standard major chord, but instead of matching that chord, he'll sing a different note to turn that common major chord into a 7, or a 9, or something along the lines, making the entire song have a cooler chord progression. I think that's so cool

He was walking to his tour bus and i asked if he would like to sing while i play guitar. He said yes, we started jamming!! It was surreal for him to meet Madonna, that was a surreal moment for me!!! Chino is really down to earth!

Was such a great show. Smaller venue than Deftones plays in and Chino came right down in the crowd and walked around us while singing. You don't really get those moments to enjoy for the big shows. So was awesome to live.
I dunno got the pleasure of meeting him and the band 3-4 times over the past 18 years and they are all awesome people was fucking star struck the first time I met them before white pony blew up in 2000 got to hang out with them, still in my opinion one of the greatest and most dynamic and hardworking bands out there and one of the best live performances bar none. First show I ever went to deftones opened for limp bizkit... I thought chino was extremely humble and intense, very appreciative of the crowd, bizkit came out (didn't go to see them but stayed to see them regardless) and the lead singer was saying "fuck you!" And held up a middle finger to the crowd, and I thought to myself "who are these assholes? Deftones is so much better and will outlast these self-righteous turds" ... Happy to say it came true
Rover is actually a DJ from north east ohio, I live near the studio, he has a tendency to ask pointless questions, I honestly would have picked their other host Alan Cocks as opposed to rover, still love the fact that chino dropped by to chat. No bad vibes towards Rover though as he is most definitely hilarious, And its funny as shit that he brought up Fred Durst, Chino hates that dude lmao.

The way the interviewer asked about Chi acting like he didn't know his name and how he continued to ask for details about how the accident happened and the state Chi was in was disrespectful and annoying. Ok, the interviewer needs to do his god damn research. You don't ask "Did anything change after the death of... erm... Chi, right? He played bass?" That is a recent event... That's just terrible work.
At the beginning of the interview, he mentions how he didn't expect Chino to come by, because people usually come to his show BEFORE their show to promote it. Chino came by after his show nonetheless. I would suppose the interviewer didn't have more than a few minutes to prepare for the interview. It kinda looked like he was fed some information during the interview.
Even if he knew everything about Deftones, he still has to conduct the interview as if he doesn't. For the sake of the listener. It's a way to get more out of the artist. He asks questions as if he doesn't know, so Chino can be more indepth with his answers. This is probably one of the best Chino interviews you'll find. Stop complaining.
chi's accident was in o9, not every interviewer is a fan of the people they interview, he is asking questions if he knows everything beforehand then its not a fucking interview, when he asked did anything change , it could have meant was it a possible end to the band, or are they gonna replace him? Trust I got a homie in a coma, they have had a lot of time to grieve and make peace with the 6 YEAR wait that yielded no results. The guy did his job, and for the record, when it comes to comas that span that long the person laying lifeless is just that of a lifeless body, it is a brutal thing to witness but after enough time they have in your mind been dead for a while, hope only lasts for so long before you have to accept it for what it is. Chi's initial accident was the day he died, only those who have dealt with coma situations can understand how difficult and hopeless it can be to just wait. I can honestly say that there was a point where I just wished my boy would either die or wake up, cause standing on the sideline helpless is almost like being in a coma along side of him, and not being able to do shit to help him possibly wake up cause no one ever can give you the answers you want even those who regain conciseness don't come out 100% for reasons like brain damage and shit like that.
