  • Can a $900 Ruger SR1911 Officer 9mm hold its own against a $1,600 Dan Wesson ECO 9mm? I love the ECO, but the Ruger? Well, watch the video...

    I have several Dan Wesson 1911s, though not the ECO. I also have several Rugers including the Officer. One thing to think about, is that if you buy an SR1911 Officer and an SR 1911 Lightweight Commander you can mix and match slides on different frames for not much more than a DW would cost. I generally carry my Ruger as a CCO with the Officer frame and the Commander slide and barrel. You could also carry the Officer slide and barrel on the LW Commander frame but that just seems backwards to me. I tend to prefer my DWs but the Rugers are very nice guns for the money and I carry my CCO or Officer more than any other single stack just from ease of carrying and concealing. I'm sure if I ever run into an DW ECO or CCO it will probably get carried more than the Ruger. I do have a Guardian in .38 Super and it isn't much harder to carry or conceal. We are lucky to have so many affordable 1911s on the market right now.

    Thanks for this video. It the one I've been waiting for. Can't afford the Dan Wesson yet but I've been watching the Ruger since it came out. The Ruger officer 45 is on my wish list for summer carry. Have a sig ultra 45 that I got on sale, but I want to keep it nice for special occasions.

      I watched the on-line auctions and local used/consignment shelves for more than a year before I found a nice ECO .45 for less than $1,000. Then within another year I found two more pre-owned, but excellent condition ECO 9mm pistols, each for less than $1,000.

    This has been a dilemma for me. I have (and love) a Sig P938. It holds 7+1, has a 3” barrel, and weighs 17oz empty. I’ve been looking at sub 4.25” 1911’s for a while, but can’t decide if the P938 already fits that role. Thanks for Sharing! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

      Frank, as always, thanks for watching and for commenting. Have you seen our compact 9 video where we put a Kimber Micro 9 up against a Kimber Ultra Carry II? There is a difference between the two guns and each has its place.
      I will be comparing the Micro 9 to the P938 in the near future, but as a preview, I like the Kimber just a hair better than the Sig. (On the flip side, I like the Sig P238 better than the Kimber Micro .380.)

    Great comparison video! Ruger uses casting for their slide stop and safeties on all 1911s. I had a safety brake once and it exposed the material that it was made of. If broke because if an operator error. If used properly it would have probably hold well for a long time.

    Dan Wesson has a forged frame, no mim parts and better sights. There in fact is the difference in price and if it’s a carry gun something to think about. I carry the Ruger commander which I de-mimed (EGW, Ed Brown, Wilson) and changed out the sights also did a bobtail, and undercut, I did the install myself and I have 1600.00 in the gun. Buy the DW. I did get a great education on the 1911 and a rock solid dependable gun that I fitted myself so still a good deal. Great review! Don’t file that front sight you will get into the dot, ask me how I know lol.

    Nice video, but do you think about the 9mm verses 45ACP arguments I mean, discussion. I had a Springfield, but it was a scratch magnet. I sold it and fell in love with CZ Compacts, a PCR and 2 P01s. But now I feel the need to get another 1911 in 9mm. I am wanting to go around $750, but what's your opinion on something a little cheaper and using some WC parts to upgrade like I did on the Springfield? I carried a full size 1911 back in 1970 in that little country called Vietnam. I bought a Commander off of a PF for $40 MPC and $20 US. Had to leave it behind when I was medevacted out.

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Doc, I have a fondness for .45s, but with the advancements in defensive ammo, I'm very happy with a 9mm for daily carry. Plus, I can shoot it more for less money and less discomfort to my hand. A 300-round range session with a lightweight compact 9mm 1911 is just fine, but it's a bit much with the same size and weight .45.
      I have come to like my CZ P01. I had a Cajun trigger put in it and I'll be doing an update in the near future. But for the Officer 1911 size, the Ruger, at a street price around $750, is a great value. The Springfield Range Officer Compact is close to the same price and size, though it has a 4" barrel, rather than the 3.6 on the Ruger.
      P.S.: I also had that all expenses paid "vacation" to Vietnam in '68/'69. That was an "educational" experience.

    I think Ruger would be happy with this comparison. Half the price, all the function.
    I would probably love the Dan Wesson but would feel like maybe I spent too much for the name or some other minor features.
    I use xs big dots on my carry guns since my cataract surgery so sights are a wash. If it comes down to flush and beveled barrels and grips... That seems minor to me.

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  ปีที่แล้ว

      Grips can be changed and the flush reverse crown barrel is a nice visual touch, though not really functional. But full disclosure: I sold the Ruger and occasionally carry the ECO. Thanks for watching.

    Just curious as to what(if any) advantage there is to using the 1911 for edc. 1911's are super cool and i am proud to own several of them. However, it has never been a practical consideration to me to ever carry one. It just seems that a 1911 would be less than ideal compared to a striker fired, double stack 9mm in terms of simplicity and higher capacity. I love 1911's, but carry a glock. Perhaps i need to reconsider an officer or commander sized 1911 for everyday carry. The Ruger certainly is an attractive option for it's price point. Great video as always!

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tim, a 1911 isn't the best option for EDC for everyone. Carrying in "condition one" (cocked and locked) requires more training and regular practice to develop the necessary muscle memory to de-activate the thumb safety and to ensure that one has a good grip on the pistol to depress the grip safety. However, those two safeties are what, in my opinion, make the 1911 the safest pistol for EDC. I carried a Glock on duty for 24 years and off duty for the final 10 years of my career and did so without any problems. However, having two user-operable safeties on a carry gun, as opposed to no user-operable safeties on most striker-fired guns, is very comforting to me. (No, the trigger tab on most striker fired guns is not a "safety". And most striker fired guns are anywhere from 85% to 95% cocked - without any safety.)
      Yes, double-stack striker-fired guns have greater capacity, though that often comes with greater bulk and weight, but I'm comfortable with the 9 rounds in my ECO, and another 10 rounds in a quick reload. But again, the key is lots of training, as well as dry practice for getting a 1.5 second draw to accurate first shot from concealment, while properly gripping the gun and de-activating the thumb safety. (Every time I grab my 1911 I know the condition of the safety just by the feel of my right thumb - under the safety when drawing and re-holstering, on top of the safety to de-activate it when coming up on target and shooting. But LOTS of practice.)
      Everyone should carry the gun that they are most comfortable and proficient with, regardless of platform.
      Thanks for watching and for commenting.
      BTW, the Ruger is a very nice gun, but several of my Rugers just went on consignment at my local gun shop.

    Good video, thank you. I think I'm doing things backward, because I want a 9mm 1911 and I have a plastic fantastic in 45 auto, lol. I had the Ruger CMD in 9mm, but the mags kept losing hold of the top round. Disconcerting to have a round flop out of the grip after you take the mag out. Maybe some aftermarket mags would have helped. I plan on buying an ECO at some point.

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grey Beard, interesting that you had problems with the Ruger mags. Top round creep is common to 9mm 1911s, at least in my experience, but they shouldn't be coming out. Have you tried Wilson mags? I've found them to be the most reliable for 9mm 1911s.
      Thanks for watching and for commenting.

    • @greybeard277
      @greybeard277 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul, I purchased all three of my ECOs pre-owned and haven't had any issues with any of them. $1,100 is a decent price, considering how scarce the ECO is these days. As long as the finish isn't excessively worn, there are no obvious indications of damage and it has the original box, there isn't much else to watch for, other than the sights. The ECO came with Henie Ledge Straight Eight night sights. If it has any other sights, that may, or may not, be a consideration. And it goes without saying that the older the gun, the dimmer the night sights will be. I hope this helps.

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Raligh, thanks for watching and adding your thoughts. But I do need to clarify a couple things.
      First, Rider's Range is a very small minnow in the big TH-cam ocean. At the time that video was published I had just passed the 1,000 subscriber mark, so no one is going to pay me for anything. Even today, no one has offered to pay me for a review, and if they did, I would still call it as I see it. I will never take money to slant a review in a particular direction.
      Second, I wasn't bashing the Ruger. If you have followed my channel for any length of time you will see that I have done 4 other Ruger 1911 reviews. I like Rugers in general and they make very nice 1911 pistols.
      Third, our 22-part Great Affordable 1911 Series put two guns side-by-side based on caliber and frame size. This particular Ruger was the only Officer-size gun that I had to put up against the Dan Wesson ECO. So, while the Ruger is a very nice, accurate, reliable gun, the ECO is the better gun. In my experience, Dan Wesson makes the best "production" 1911 pistols. (No, I didn't get paid to say that, either.)
      Finally, this was just my experience with these two guns. As they say, "your mileage may vary".
      But again, thanks for adding your thoughts.
