  • In this video I select a carry gun from the 44 1911 pistols that I reviewed in the 22-part Great Affordable 1911 Series. Remember, my selection was limited to the pistols I reviewed in the series, not any other pistols. (Videos on the selection of a range pistol coming soon.) Below is a list of the pistols we reviewed for this series:
    Colt: Government, LightWeight Commander, Wiley Clapp Commander
    Kimber: Custom TLE/TFS, Pro Carry, Aluminum Stainless, Ultra Carry II, Aegis, KHX
    Ruger: SR1911 Full-size, Commander (3), Officer
    S&W: "E"-Series, Performance Center, Scandium, Pro Series
    Dan Wesson: Vigil, ECO, Guardian, CCO, PM-C
    STI: Duty One, Elektra, Guardian, Staccato C
    Rock Island: Government, Tactical
    Sig: Scorpion, Nitron Fastback, Stainless Target Elite
    Springfield: Mil-Spec, Range Officer, RO Compact, EMP CCC
    Taurus: PT1911
    Norinco: Model of the 1911 A1
    Les Baer: Stinger
    Nighthawk: T4
    Citadel: CCO
    For the TH-cam manual reviewers:
    1) This video complies with all TH-cam guidelines and standards;
    2) All firearm handling is done by a trained professional in a controlled, safe environment and all shooting is done on a dedicated, safe shooting range;

    I just picked up the Ed Brown Evo KC9 G4. The moment I removed it from the carry case and "gripped up" on the pistol, I immediately could feel the quality of this firearm. Well balanced and cosmetically...a really good looking pistol. The fit and finish is remarkable and the slide action is as smooth as butter. Tge trippger is crisp and clean on the break and the reset is instat.
    In detail and workmanship to quality of excellence...the Ed Brown is by far, arguably one of the best CC 1911 any where out there in the industry. 🏆🏁

    I’d take the Colt for carry & the S&W for the range, but really it could be the other way around. I like carrying my all steel .45 1911s.

    • @RidersRange

      RGL01, I like shooting the steel-frame guns, but for daily carry, I prefer to keep the loaded weight under 36 ounces. I still occasionally carry the PointMan Carry, but at more than 41 ounces, that's relegated to days when I'm not walking around much. Thanks for watching.

    I now carry a Staccato C and agree with your "cons". The grip should have more of a texture; I addressed this with grip tape. The new Cs have carry triggers near 5 lbs so that was fixed. I probably will change the mag release. It's so concealable that it's easy to forgot I'm carrying; the fix is simply to carry every waking hour. It's a great shooting gun which more than compensates for the minor cons.

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rick, thank you for watching and commenting. I did a video back in August 2020 comparing the original C vs the new C DUO (demonetized by TH-cam for reasons unknown - but still visible on my channel). The grip texture has been improved, as has the trigger (for carry, as you mentioned), but not the mag release.
      Spoiler alert: Watch for my follow-up on what I'm carrying now.

    I started following you before you hit 1000 subs and remember trying to get you there. Great videos like this series, your range is also like a country club but most of all is your likable personality and knowledge and ability to describe guns. Can you do a series on double stack 1911/2011 without the affordable part? You might need to add a few: Para-Ordnance, Llama and RIA.

    For a carry gun in my opinion sights and trigger are the last things I’m worried about. According to data going back to the early 90s most self defense shootings are within 3-5 yards. That’s draw point n shoot territory. The sights aren’t even used. Also with all that adrenaline going thru ur body ur not gonna even notice what the trigger feels like. A battle gun is a different story…..kinda

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sean, I'm afraid you and I will have to agree to disagree on the subject. I've seen far too many documented cases where good guy and bad guy exchanged shots as close as 6 feet apart and neither one hit the other. Luck counts, but you can't count on luck. It takes skill and a tremendous amount of continuous practice to "point shoot" at anything beyond arms length and expect a good hit without counting on luck. Even then, trigger control is king and a great trigger makes that control a little easier. As to the 3-5 yards "average", the operative word is "most", and I'm not one to rely on statistical averages. That's why I do 90% of my practice and training from 12 to 25 yards, and some out to 50 yards. I want to be prepared for the situations that are outside that "average". And I want the best equipment available to give me every possible edge.

      @seanwhitman4365 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RidersRange to each their own the. I guess. I like my carry gun to be as small and as light as possible. Most of the time it’s the Glock 43x or sig p365. With both of those I can hit my target very consistently within 20 yards. I belong to a private gun club so I practice real life situations instead of just standing there shooting at paper. Both triggers are very different but like I said I could care less what they feel like. Just my opinion

  • @SirJonathan439

    My Colt Wiley Clapp light weight commander is a great gun but for a carry gun I find it to have way to many sharp edges on it. The front cocking serrations are so sharp that they remove a small amount of leather from the inside of my holster every time I draw. Colt could do a lot better. I have a Dan Wesson Eco in .45. I absolutely love it! It's such a smooth, beautiful, high quality firearm. I love how Dan Wesson slightly rounds the butt as you mentioned. Great choice! Thanks for all your work on this series. Naturally the 1911 COLTS IN .45 and an engraved. 38 Super are great with the standard grip configurations. LW Commander [1971 era] or all steel. There is just something about the 1911 pistol that extrudes confidence for me when carried. Don't own a 1911 in 9mm; favor the Super. Great series on my personal favorite sidearm. I have close to a decade on you and an astigmatism makes for challenges with iron sights, so I'm getting more into optics. I recently purchased a Swampfox green dot, but haven't done much shooting with it. I'll probably do a review at some point. (Don't get turned off by the brand "Swampfox". They are quality optics from an American company. They are made in China, as are most optics, but are made specifically to Swampfox engineering specs, not re-branded stuff, and the name "Swampfox" has historical significance.)
      I haven't shot a Girsan, but EAA markets some quality, affordable, pistols. I can't find much info on the Perry optic that comes with the Girsan 1911, but I believe it fits on the same footprint as the Vortex Venom/Viper or Swampfox Liberty or Justice. Unfortunately, there are no provisions for co-witness iron sights, which, for me, would be a requirement.
      If you get one, I'd be curious about your thoughts, once you get some trigger time with it.

    The 9mm Dan Wesson ECO is a great choice. If you have the opportunity, I recommend that you evaluate the Wilson Combat EDC X9s for use as a carry gun. No arguments. I’m a Dan Wesson fan; have a couple myself. Top two are the Specialist and the Valkyrie “CCO” (both 45). If I could’ve found a Valkyrie CCO in 9, I would likely be carrying it but since it was not around at the time, the Staccato C (new style) became my carry gun. As my eyes age the ability to add a red dot became a positive point in favor of the “C” (may have been a blessing in disguise that I couldn’t find a Valkyrie 9). I’ve done some work to the grip on the “C” to make it better for me. It shoots very well, so no regrets (though I’d still like a small funnel).

    I’m a recent subscriber, but have really enjoyed the channel. I am in the process of determining what my preferred carry pistol is also.For years, it has been a Glock 26 with Pierce magazine extensions, which is as small a pistol as I can manage due my very large hands. I would prefer a full size grip or an abbreviated grip with a full size equivalent magazine extension; however, as you know, they become hard to conceal in a strong side, 8:00 o’clock position (left handed), holster, and I’m not an Apendix guy. So, the search continues…I’m about to pull the trigger on a Sig P365 XL with 15 round mags and see if that works for me.
    On another note. I’m curious what you take as a retired LEO is on speed vs accuracy in a defensive situation. I’m not super fast from the concealed draw (realistically 2.75 draw to first shot) but I am very particular about accuracy, which I stress in training my church’s Security Team (NRA Certified in Basic Pistol and 11 years an IDPA Competitor [retired]. I get a little perturbed with all the emphasis on speed by virtually all of todays trainers. I’m slow, never will be fast, but I can be very accurate, which I believe to be more important in a defensive situation arising in a crowded environment. What are your thoughts…maybe you could offer a video covering this subject matter?

      Gregg, thank you for watching and subscribing.
      I carried a G27 on and off duty for the final 10 years of my career and, like you, it had a Pearce grip extension. I also don't do the Appendix thing. I just can't wrap my head around where the muzzle points, especially considering that most striker-fired guns are from 85% to 100% cocked without a safety. So I carry at 3:30 IWB and OWB. I have medium-size hands, but the P365 and 365XL grip frame is too small in circumference for me. I added a Hogue HandAll grip sleeve and it works much better. (I believe I did a video or two on that.) I suggest you try before you buy.
      As to speed vs accuracy, I always believe you can get speed if you have accuracy first, but you can never get accuracy if you have speed first. As a former PPC shooter, where being able to hold a sub-6" group at 50 yards, double-action, was a requirement to be competitive, I believe in accuracy. I also teach my students that "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast", so shoot slow quickly. I still challenge myself on my 8" and 6" plates at 50 yards with almost every gun I shoot, but I try for a sub-two second draw to first shot at 12 yards and closer, with that shot anywhere in the "A" zone of an IDPA target. And I like to be able to run a six-pack of 8" plates at 12 yards in under 5 seconds. Not blindingly fast, but hitting 8" plates at 12 yards requires a modicum of both speed and "okay" accuracy.
      I hope this helps.

      By the way, when you run your 6-pack of plates at 12 yards is that from open carry or concealed?

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregggibson3109 that depends. When I'm working with a new gun for a review, I usually run the plates from a high ready. I regularly do draw to first shot practice with my carry gun using the G-Sight ELMS, practicing from concealment with whatever I'm wearing that day, then live fire from concealment on those rare occasions when I hit the range with my carry gun, rather than a gun I'm evaluating.

    I can't say it's a bad choice :). Any choice that works is good. I agree with you, I just need one with a bobtail. OH NO, that means I have to buy more 1911's, didn't see that coming, lol. I never worry about weight, I love heavy guns and hit better with them. I also favor steel frame. Maybe why 1911 is my favorite... take care, hopefully I'll see you on Wednesdays

      Craig, I never thought about weight when I had hips. Somewhere along the line those disappeared, so now the extra weight requires suspenders and/or constantly adjusting the trousers.

    Dan Wesson makes a great pistol, and, in any case, one shouldn't quarrel with another man's first choice for their concealed carry. That said however, one could argue that a reviewer of Mr. Rider's standing in the reviewing community might consider something with a little more bling, even if it is for concealed carry. Congratulations on 10k subscribers!

      There are working tools and show "tools". The closest I can come to a BBQ gun (not that I go out to BBQ) is either my Ruger NSW (beautiful pistol from Part 13 of the Series), or my Heavy Armor Division Trump .45, and that one I would have to be careful where I wear around southeast Michigan.

      Jeff, I almost bought a Fusion Freedom CCO instead of the Dan Wesson PM-C. I still look at Fusion on occasion, but haven't found one at the right price at the right time. Thanks for watching.
