      I would like to see a episode
      of Isobel (I believe she had
      real nurses training) when she
      was young. The British empire
      had nurses in every war since
      the Crimean war (1853 - 1856).

      @@chiamave can't much blame him, considering they gave the character no real connection to Mary and blew it when a predecessor who wasn't meant to be "the one" proved to have far more chemistry with the actress on screen. Isobel is my favorite character. Relatively close to the aristocrats' level in terms of learnedness and refinement, but separate enough to see their pretensions and delusions. They always referred to her as "middle class" but she's about as high as social class goes today before you get to the super rich. A daughter and wife of doctors and a mother of a lawyer. She was well established in the professional class. In her first scene she was shown to have a maid.

    • @mjacobs5041
      @mjacobs5041 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She likely far exceeded the aristocracy learning. Especially the women. They looked down on such things as middle class.

    • @nycp1969
      @nycp1969 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mjacobs5041Very true! Isobel had hard skills. She was a nurse. I was referring more to exposure to art, esthetics, politeness and other domains that the Downton group knew about. Isobel and Matthew could keep up with the conversation. They didn't message as a lower class other than that they didn't own an estate or have titles.

    The chemistry between Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley) and Maggie Smith (Violet Crawley) is undeniable.
    Their on camera interactions... produced some of the greatest scenes of the entire show.
    I understand that Julian Fellows tried and failed to have others help in writing the dialog for the show... but in the end he did it all himself.
    His words... coupled with these two great actors... and their interpretation of this relationship and it's evolution... is just amazing.
    Watching this friendship build, as the years go by... it truly is something to see.
    There is that scene where Isobel and Violet are walking through the village and they are talking about friendships, acquaintances... and relationships.
    Ending with Violet's line... '... I was talking about companionship... as I hope you were too.'... and then Isobel's smirk.
    It was in that moment... and SO many others just like it... that we got to see the amazing relationship these two women built over the years.
    The transformation of their relationship... from moment of their first introduction... to Violet's death... is heartwarming to say the least.

    I always thought Miss "Slain Fox" was a bit of foreshadowing. I'm sure her first name wasn't "Slain" but since we almost always heard it with Miss in front, it nearly always sounded like slain to me.

    She's insufferable. Reminds me of a long time friend of mine who is personally very kind but whose world view, like Crowley's, is ultraliberally screwed AND who lives a very nice life of comfort at a safe distance from all the victims she "cares" about. Isabel is an archetype of the Limousine Liberal, destroying all the long-built structures around her while suffering NONE of the consequences. Awful woman.

      Lol, what long-built structures did Isobel specifically destroy? If anything she ended up acclimating to the family and their way of life relatively smoothly. There's an argument to be made on wether that didn't contradict her values, and she certainly lived in more comfort than the people she advocated for. But she used her privilege to help, and her position didn't cloud her understanding of the fundamentally unjust system in which she lived.

      What kind of consequences people have to suffer about exactly ? Her standing for modernization at the hospital saved a farmer's life in the very first episodes and improved the local hospital, her standing against the establishment's traditions finally awarded Molesley a prize for best bloom in the village and countless other things to reward merit rather than birth, her standing against prejudice saved the little gardener's job when Violet had to admit her mistake after wrongfully accusing him of thief, her standing for social mobility comforted Tom who felt as an outsider upstairs and a traitor downstairs ... if one character has to be a limousine liberal, it would more likely be Rose who does charity as a hobby but would never question the system.

      I think you're making up a word salad and trying to justify your personal dislike of her character because nothing you've written applies to Isobel's character.

      @@yannickdrmda5295 Well….Rose didn’t question THE system, but she did challenge A system in choosing to marry Atticus.
