I once had the opportunity to buy one (same colour and year, but rotten side sills) for 3200 Euro's which I then deemed 'too expensive". One of the few things in my life that I regret sincerely. They sky-rocketed in price a year after and now I cannot justify buying one over other cars in that price range...
I mean over 150hp was high for 80s Mercs and I think one of the charms of the 16v is the plain look, if you would take the wing off it will look like normal 190E if you dont know the exterior changes. The W201 is very similar to W124 (E-class) and 190E was a test mule (atleast what I have read) for the upcoming E-class like the 5 link suspension
I love autoweek retro videos. They do tend to favor American cars but to be objective 180hp, 16v racing engine, coming out of the malaise era I would’ve been excited too.
@voice of reason I have a friend who had a Merkur XR4Ti of the same era, and that did not hold up well...AT ALL. Literally fell apart. To quote him -> "Worst car ever"
@@bwest6275 agree with you bro. My cousin had an XR4Ti and it was a POS. I remember fondly all the times it had to be taken into service due to manufacturing defects. Plus, the interior was pure crap. If the end goal is pure speed, sure, a boosted car is much easier to mod than a NA engine. But IMHO a 190e is leagues better in quality and overall engineering. A reason why people sure have forgotten the Sierra.
It's mechanical multi-point fuel injection (k-jet) controlled by electronics (ecu) not real EFI like nowadays :) I daily drive a 2.3 8v and love it,it's a momentum car,,this must be really great to drive with the extra hp and nm.
...then there's the 190E 2.6 (6 cylinder 2.6 - the same engine as the W124 260E larger bodied car) with 124kW (167hp) @ 5800rpm and 228Nm @ 4600rpm vs the 190E 2.0 with 89kW (120hp) @ 5100rpm and 175Nm @ 3500rpm.
And the 1.8 109 hp or 80 kW @ 5500 rpm ,150 Nm or 110 lb.ft @ 3700 rpm.The early ones are 190 without the E,meaning they are carburetor (80 hp or 66 kW @ 5000 rpm,165 Nm or 121 lb.ft @ 3500 rpm).
@@ryn0287 I think we've just about covered everything there :) 190E: I can't say enough good things about that series of cars in their looks and engineering aspects (2.3 and 2.6 are the pick of the bunch for daily drivers town and highway driving). Great that they're not front wheel drive yet are a 4 or 6 cylinder small to medium sized German saloon.
I would put this on the level of the BMW E38 750 IL. The V12 was a cruiser not a speed demon. I did have a custom Stainless Steel Exhaust made by Tomie for it. Now before you bash me this Cosworth powered Benz is amazing reqaurdless but not a speed demon. I have hade a W124 Wagon that I put the AMG V8 in it. Iconic cars forever
Mercedes nerd here, the self-leveling came from the S class or station wagons, of those years, the system wasn't terribly rare and you can find parts at junkyards for cheap,
I’ve got a 2.3l 8v 190e 5spd. Currently in Europe. I have a grand idea in mind to drive it to China and ship it to US and drive home to NY. Does anyone have any ideas on where I should start maintenance wise and map and border crossing?
Only the Zylinderhead was made by Cosworth, Rest of the Engine is made by Mercedes. :) Great Video, and Great Car! Got the same one, but 185 HP. Greez from Benztown Sindelfingen ⭐️
Zach - pulling for you man. Big shoes to fill. I think if you had a bit more structure it might help. Matt's videos tell a story with a defined intro, bit of history and then piece by piece review of key attributes - drivetrain, tranny, brakes, steering, etc. and how it all comes together to feel in the driver's seat. Your not really telling a story rather sort of winging it with some personal/google facts thrown in here and there. Tough to pull off an interesting piece over 30 minutes with that approach. I think you have what it takes just need to learn a bit from Matt and then find your own voice. Good luck!
Thanks for the constructive criticism (honestly). Always trying to refine and get better. It's difficult to balance with someone in the car. I don't want the owner to sit silently while I tell the history, specs, and run through how it drives. I feel like we covered all the pieces in this drive, just not in the most efficient order. But that's how conversations go. Structure is easier to maintain when it's a press car, or someone let's me drive it alone. - ZK
Agree, pulling for you man. I'd be great for you to be a bit louder/ clearer - maybe a mic issue in the beginning? Also prefer if you use the word 'like' less. Great job - look forward to more.
thank you for the presentation, please i am looking for a 1992 Mercedes benz 190 that comes with factory fitted c class engine that uses modern fuel economy system
Owned one. It was very hard run and came to me wearing shitty lexani knockoff 19’s. Rectified the ground control and a few other things and had a great time. Rust won the day though and I sold it for what I paid to someone interested in the drivetrain. If I had the chance to jump on a clean one or the later 2.5 I’d take it at any reasonable price
2.5-16 demands a 10-20k premium. Any clean one demands almost as much, even for just the base model. A clean one in good running condition is going to run you $5,000 easy. And you'll have to look long and hard for it. Hurry up and jump on the wagon, I have a feeling it only goes up from here.
Everything I've researched says the m104 is better suited for boost. Slightly easier to make the compression ratio right, higher boost potential, and if you can find a flywheel for it, will bolt up to the same dogleg transmission as seen in the 2.3-16. That being said, I remember a few years back there was only a couple of flywheels left in a warehouse in Germany. Mercedes was asking $600+ tax and shipping. In comparison, You can find the transmission itself, complete with 4 cylinder flywheel, pedals, master cylinder, linkages, and a shift knob for around $1,000 fairly regularly. Either way you go, you end up basically having to fabricate your own exhaust system and intake system. There's no simple provisions for boost control or fueling adjustment without delving into the Bosch fuel system. Even then, you're working with 60's and 70's mechanical injection with a couple of electronic band-aids on it. The system is super finnicky, and needs to be in basically pristine condition to run well, or to run at all under boost. As far as suspension goes, there's one or two companies with coilover conversion kits available, tuned to your own personal corner weight, for $1,000-$2,000, or you can pick any of a number of coil springs from an R134, W124, etc. and cut to length. There's really 2 different chassis, the 4 cylinder chassis, and the 6 cylinder chassis. The 6 cylinder has a removable upper radiator support which is basically mandatory for the motor/trans to come in and out. The 4 cylinder without the removable support is even a rather close squeeze in the first place. Great car, fantastic if it's running perfectly, fantastic if you modify it to run perfectly, and a vast amount of knowledge and information available in the aftermarket. Makes it hard to want to continue to go through with selling mine...
You only need about 300 - 320 hp - the car weighs about as much as a 85 Honda Civic - which would be in power to weight ratio the equivalence of 500hp over all - that’s with all the interior, a race prep would be more - NA is good - but expensive to get this type of power , boost the 2.3 8v its built for it ;-)
I remember driving a friend's 4g63 swapped W201 190e.. Beast!! It's unexpectedly light for its size but very well composed as well and having crashed in one of those.. It's a very safe car!! I am about to start helping turbo my mates 190e later this year.. But it's a long way to go.. (Damned K Jetronic!!!)

I need one of these. I've got an 87 190D Turbo, it needs an 87 190E Cossie to hang with.
5:53 - Perfect impression of John Davis (host of MotorWeek "We're glad to have you with us").
It's amazing how everyone still has the story about this car all wrong!
The cars bad ass. Bow to mercedes back in the day. We own 5 of them 190e sportline, s500 lwb, 560sec, and 2 300 diesels w123s. Love old benz!
I've always loved this car. Hardly even see them even when they were new.
Did you know that Martin Brundle said this was one of the best read drive chassis of any sedan! Really hope people get this reference...lol
Like the fighting over Rose's analogy and glad your using it again. Kinda miss the echo slightly though lol awesome content as always Zach. Keep up the great work
I have been shying away from One Take since Zach took over the built cars and Matt has been doing the bought cars. Zach just didn't seem as knowledge and didn't grab my attention as well, and I don't watch the channel for the bought cars. That being said, Zach, good job on this review, I really enjoyed it. I'm going to start watching regularly again.
I'm thinking of getting a 190e as a first car. Anything I should worry about? My dad works with cars specifically Mercedes so repairs aren't an issue. Love the design
i always loved the way these look, i would absolutely have one of these.
Dream car. A collector condition one is for sale here right now, it's about $60.000. I'll keep dreaming.
You need to put that 190e against a contemporary 205 GTI and see whats what :D
One important word associated with this car I didn't see in the comments. "Senna" Nuff said.
These were absolute beasts in DTM. The sound of the intake is pure sex.
Intake plenum droning like mad at full throttle especially in cold weather!! Greatness!!
Did they make a two door in this shape?
Zach is killing it. Nice job.
As a 190E 2.3-16v owner i love my Cosworth.
Don’t ever sell it! Or if you do, I’ll buy it.
Great to see. Thanx
I have a euro version 1987. Only 110k on the clock. Owned for 20 year currently under full resto. In the best colour imo the blue over black not champain, the only 2 colours the 2.3 came in. Had to also get rid of the big ugly steering wheel for a smaller wooden momo. Hope mine turns out looking as beautiful as yours.
Zach is the best, need more Zach Attack!
Absolute dream car!
Love that Zack car spots while he does 1 takes.
Wow I skipped a couple videos on this channel since Matt announced he was no longer going to shoot one takes, I had no idea this guy would pick it up. I am so fucking glad he did, I really enjoy the new host , he reminds me of Idubbbz for some reasons. I think I saw a R8 review he did back in the day.
Anyway great video!
We call that a Racing 'Box ( 'box = gearbox) -- I would never mistake it for an inline-6, sounds totally different
Man I️ miss my 2.6 e30 had 270k miles and still ran like a champ !
The steering is for AMG produced by Momo. Cost a fortune too.
What 16" tire dimension do you put on these wheels to avoid rubbing?
Whatever everyone is saying about missing Matt, I liked the video Zach! Keep it up!
I love autoweek retro videos. They do tend to favor American cars but to be objective 180hp, 16v racing engine, coming out of the malaise era I would’ve been excited too.
What’s the going rate for these nowadays?
Come on don't forget the Daddy from the era...The Sierra Cosworth!
Not available in the US market
Bet that Ford build quality has aged well...
@voice of reason I have a friend who had a Merkur XR4Ti of the same era, and that did not hold up well...AT ALL. Literally fell apart. To quote him -> "Worst car ever"
@voice of reason He bought the car new, and after four years it was already in bad shape.
The GOAT. Period.
It's mechanical multi-point fuel injection (k-jet) controlled by electronics (ecu) not real EFI like nowadays :) I daily drive a 2.3 8v and love it,it's a momentum car,,this must be really great to drive with the extra hp and nm.
...then there's the 190E 2.6 (6 cylinder 2.6 - the same engine as the W124 260E larger bodied car) with 124kW (167hp) @ 5800rpm
and 228Nm @ 4600rpm vs the 190E 2.0 with 89kW (120hp) @ 5100rpm and 175Nm @ 3500rpm.
Zack s killing it. Awesome ...
still beautiful after 2 decades almost 3
The 04-06 GTO also had heavily bolstered rear seats like that.
Zack is cool. He is giving it everything.
This model keep going up in value!
not sure if it was the mic but any b, k or f20c sounds better.
Finally a 16V on the channel 👍👍
I wish they had used a euro spec 16v instead.
Another great video Zack. Thanks man.
Only the Zylinderhead was made by Cosworth, Rest of the Engine is made by Mercedes. :)
Great Video, and Great Car! Got the same one, but 185 HP.
Greez from Benztown Sindelfingen ⭐️
Had a 87 and 93 190e 8valve unfortunately but alot of fun. Rwd too
Zach - pulling for you man.
Zack youre doing a great job on these vids
That 4cyl does sound good. In an odd way it reminds of a 4age(when its down low).
thank you for the presentation, please i am looking for a 1992 Mercedes benz 190 that comes with factory fitted c class engine that uses modern fuel economy system
that down shift higher sound scares me a little!
Zack is more excited then the owner :)
A wood steering wheel would look dope
have a sub, love how the driver knows all the stats
The owner doesn't seem to enjoy the ride that much lol.
one of the best looking cars
this is special i had merc 190 with a2.5 diesel engine its a 5 banger for its time verry good
It would probably ruin it as a collector car but i'd turbo the sh1t out of that car and tune the suspension and make it what it wants to be...
why not just get a regular 190 and put a 3.2 m104 in? 230hp in a small car is alright.
and it's cheap.
@@gregorp8406 I'd never try to turbo a stock ke jetronic it has to be very hard to tune right
Zach knows more about the car than the owner himself
id never be heavy on these 40-50km hr all day 🎉
I had the option to buy one of these at a ridiculously good price a few years ago and passed. Still kicking myself.
For how much ?
what road is he driving in
Image 3 years ago talking about how crazy the car market is getting
So weird to see these become popular as a collectible. I had one and loved it. Unfortunately some illegal alien hit me and totaled the car.
