Quad Cortex - First LIVE gig with the new LOOPER - Gig Diary a pro guitarist's week in the UK

  • This week's gig diary is focusing on my attempt to use the brand new Looper device that installed on the Neural DSP Quad Cortex after the latest CorOS Update 1.3.0. The looper is designed well but maybe it's asking too much of one device. I got some live footage of my acoustic guitar gig where I attempt to replace my usual TC Electronics Ditto looper pedal running on the Quad Cortex effects loop with the new built in looper. Experience the rollercoaster ride with me!
    Video to the original song I played is here with links in the description where you can download it for free!

    I thought you were taking a pretty big risk trying to do stomp, scene, looper and presets with one set of switches. Mode switching on QC or Helix is not the way to go. It’s too easy to get confused and end up in the wrong mode, selecting the wrong preset and getting completely lost, as you demonstrated. And stooping down to recover using a touch screen on the floor while trying to play and sing is just not possible or fun. Get an MC8, setup one preset with two pages, one for changing scenes, and one for controlling the looper. Leave QC in stomp mode all the time. That works great.

      I checked the MC8. That looks like a brilliant bit of kit! I'll have to decide if I'd use all the extra stuff it does, or whether my looper does what I need. Thanks for the tip!

    I'm - in equal measure - thrilled that the looper has finally arrived, and hacked off that i find it so hard to use. I only want basic 'record', 'play', 'overdub' and 'stop' functions, but unless I keep the looper screen permanently in focus, the QC seems to have a mind of its own.... somehow I managed fine with my (now sold, in order to buy the QC) Helix.
    So, my trusty Trio+ looper isn't to be consigned to eBay quite yet....

      You find the QC looper X hard to use?? It’s probably one of the easiest loppers to use on all the modelers.

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, think that could work, let's see what they come out with. My looper is still in use too!

    Do you have tinnitus too? That's a common 'injury' from gigging that every muso I know has to some extent. Myself included

      I've been wearing moulded ear plugs for the last 15 years and as a result I don't have tinnitus or any hearing loss. It's about the only sensible thing I've ever done, and I'm glad I did!!

    So I want to be set up in stomp mode where 3 pedals are assigned to the looper. Pedal E would be record Pedal F would be stop (in this case I guess it’s called undo/redo. And pedal G would be my one shot. Leaving me all the other pedals for different fx. Is that possible??

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so, you have to switch into the looper screen, that's why I set it up in Hybrid mode as i found that method unusable. You could use an external midi controller though.

    Haha, please keep making these nerve wracking errors so the rest of us don’t have to. This is why I stay away from looping live. Great original tune and I don’t even like country.

      I've been looping live for years.....most of my musical looping mistakes were made a long time ago....now I have the new technical mistakes to deal with as the technology "improves"😀. Glad you like the song. Lots of people who say they don't like Country say they like that song! I think that's good!!

    its too triky to use the looper the way you intend to, press 2 buttons at once to change from scene to stomp is a pain in the ass, and u can fail easily, u will change preset and while u play u have no idea if u went up or down, paniking and then messup, that happen even if u play in elecrtic scenario, with future update i hope they will brin the hybrid mode with stomps id the upper row and scenes in lower; untill that day i found peace by adding a midi pedal next to the cortex that allow me to have as stomps all the effect i commonly use in my gigs, and use the cortex as only scene mode.

    Great video TJ , I had a question is it alright to record the trinity plectrum grade exams using hybrid picking or do I have to play everything picked with a pick???

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not certain, some of the pieces it's specified but for the others I don't know! So I don't give you the wrong answer it's best if you email UKandIreland@trinitycollege.co.uk - sorry I can't be more help, but I don't want you to practice it on my advice and it be wrong! Which pieces are you learning?

      Thank you so much for replying Sir it means alot ,I am working on grade initial pieces atm ,when the saints ,summer rain and white windmill (I am particularly having a lil bit of difficulty playing this piece with alternate picking for the arrpegios since I am more accustomed to using hybrid picking for playing arrpegios ....i am not that good with Changing strings with alternate picking). And thankyou so much for asking. And , Sir wanted to finally ask is white mindmill and summer rain your original pieces?

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@looneyzombie Nice to hear when someone is playing the pieces! Yes, White Windmill and Summer Rain are my original pieces. I would wait for a definitive answer from Trinity.....but I'm also not sure if you have to alternate pick the strings if you're using a pick as it's not specified, it would be worth checking. I also think, although it's harder at this stage, if you get used to the alternate picking then it will really help as you improve through the grades. When you start playing faster, alternate picking is really the only option. Good luck with the pieces!!

    I can’t comment on the QC but the Fractal FM3 has the same issue in that the looper function is on a separate foot switch layer, so is a pain to get to. I wouldn’t use it live for that very reason and would add a separate loop pedal so the functionality was alway there.

    Hi TJ,
    Greetings from Boston Massachusetts! I enjoy your content. I have a question. Are you still using your Ditto Looper? Or are now using the quad looper?

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin, I use the QC looper all the time now. With the Hybrid mode it works perfectly for me. In case you haven't seen how I set it up I go through it in this video th-cam.com/video/6uACts2kFZs/w-d-xo.html

    Yeah, I couldn't imagine using the looper without a MIDI controller. I would get tripped up the same way. The plus side is then you could also toggle Gig View without bending over.

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The midi footswitch seems like the answer....but then so does the loop pedal I've already got!

    • @EricMarinko
      @EricMarinko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iamtjwalker True. The difference is that a MIDI switcher has many uses with the Quad Cortex beyond the Looper block, while your external loop pedal is a dead end in comparison.

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep good point! I shall have a think about what else I can use it for. It’s such a versatile unit, so many possibilities that I miss obvious things sometimes!!!

    • @EricMarinko
      @EricMarinko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iamtjwalker The best advantage in my experience is that you can already achieve a hybrid mode with a capable switcher like a Morningstar controller. I.e. you can live in Scene mode but have your MIDI controller set up to toggle specific stomps without having to tap dance in and out of Stomp mode.
