People tend to be curious about what they don't know, even if it's rude sometimes, that's why children usually don't have much filter for what they ask about and I believe that's why cis people ask trans people's dead name and how you was before transition and want to know how much you changed etc with a combination of the social structure that put us on the edge of society. For me the part of population that fetishize trans bodies come from this. I was made fun of and I even tried to go by my middle name in middle school but it didn't feel any better then my first name did. It took me years to find a name that I felt fit me and I decided that I liked Roary and it really fit my personality but I wanted it to be short for something. I found Aurora and I spelled it Auroara so I could spell Roary like that. lol. I understand how it fells when people who know you by your dead name call you by that name. For me it was like they were saying "Hey stupid!" because calling me by my birth name is what it sounded like to me. Anyway... Great video. Honestly, people shouldn't care. Even if you aren't trans, lying about your birthname isn't anything that matters.
I mean it is when you’re establishing a personal relationship with someone. If you can’t even tell the truth about your name (I’m not referring to dead names because at that point thats not your name anymore) you’re immediately violating someones trust and what else could you by lying about. I mean if you’re dating someone and they lied about their age, you’d be upset right? Why wouldn’t you be upset that they lied about their name too? It might be a lie that _seems_ like something small but in the long run it has bigger implications.
In this case, it doesn’t matter so much because Noah is Noah, his dead name doesn’t matter anymore, but for someone living with their birth name it absolutely matters. Especially when you can just say “I prefer to go by my nickname, xyz” if you don’t want to give someone your real name. You don’t have to lie about it.

I went from being called by 2 names to just being called by my second name. I'm a cis girl. The people who used to call me by my first and second name are mostly people from my old school. My family and close friends have always called me Kaila for the most part. When o decided to go by just Kaila, I made a decision not to tell everyone to call me that, but to introduce myself to new people as Kaila. However there are some people who have known me for a while and called me by both ofmy names who do have a hard time remembering to call me kaila. The thing is, they still try. And its just interesting to see how people don't actually hhave A problem with getting used to calling someone a new name, they're just transphobic. Sorry this was all over the place.
I just had a lifelong friend come out as trans she was a boy and is now a girl and I am so proud of her. I am so happy she is finally comfortable with being herself and I never realized how much pain can be associated with birth names. I really hope she is happier and lives her best life!
I haven't heard my birth name in like 5 years (except both of grandma's 'they use a nickname associated with my name' and they pretend they didn't use the wrong name and switch back and forth with my name now, lol) but a lawyer called me and asked if I was formally "birth name" and it ruined my day, I was at work.
That sucks. I’m sorry your day was ruined. I have a friend who has gone by Dottie since before I met her. As in :D (dot dot D) and I learned her birth name at one point and honestly don’t even remember because that’s not her. Some older folks hold onto what they know and I think it has more to do with them & maintaining what they know than anything. I’m glad they interchange (at least).
why don’t we just say that his birth name is Noah? we all know he’s trans but we don’t need to remind him of the bit of his life which he most likely hated the most. we all know and love him as Noah and knowing his dead name will not make a difference to your life

Oh wow, you just managed to put into words what I've been feeling lately. I remember when I came out in April, I didn't care if people used my birth name, as I hadn't really started using my new name yet at that point. I didn't feel any dysphoria regarding my birthname at the time, but now that I've gotten used to my new name, I've started to have very painful moments whenever somebody has referred to me as my birth name or asked what it is. I haven't felt like the pain has been straight up dysphoria, and I've struggled to pinpoint what it exactly is that is causing me to feel so much pain towards my birth name. This video made me realize that the pain has just been flashbacks back to before I came out, and literally wanted to die. Thanks for making this video, Noah.

before I knew I was trans, I had a trans housemate. All goes well until her somewhat transphobic parents are slated to visit. Considering there were 4 of us living there and I would otherwise have turned her parents away, I had the misfortune of having to ask her what her parents called her so I'd actually have a clue what's going on. Spent the whole time hidden in my room after that though, because I was getting rather angry at the repeated misgendering and deadnaming.

This reminds me of my friend, he hasn't come out as trans yet to his family and we were talking on a call when his sisters went into the room to disturb him and I was like "(Name)!" This is one of those things that like when it's talked about your slightly curious, but like it goes away after 2 seconds, and honestly unless you're trying to hurt someone what do you get by knowing that information. A slight satisfaction of not being curious anymore. At the price of him getting harassed by others and having to go through the trauma again. It doesn't seem worth it at all. It's just really not anyone's business but his and anyone that he chooses to tell. (And they still have a right to be respectful)
