I'm sure with all the bourbon hype going around, the distillers are using the $100 price tag as the new $50. They know before release that the product is not worth the money. We in the bourbon community have to stop feeding into the hype. Thanks for pointing out the barkers.
I'm sorry for your disappointments, Matt. However your review and comments on Rare Stash made me laugh out loud! Love you and your videos, Matt! Happy new year to you and yours!
This video was a first for me because I have never seen a single bottle that you were holding in the entire video, I was dyeing laughing when you went off on the Rare Stash. OMG 🥃Cheers!
I 100% agree regarding Castle & Key. Any batch. It’s average at best (and even that’s a stretch). At least the bottle looks pretty on my shelf. Which is good because it’s going to be there for a long time :/
This list needed one more. Did you forget what you bought at the local store? It sat on top of that cool fridge. I speak of….Breckinridge. (Okay…bad rhyme 😜) You know, the one you spit all over the garage. 😂
That Castle n Key would be my tops due to the hype.... everyone was so exiceted... waiting in the Tater hope to flip lines... then someone tasted one.... that's some Rare Trash.... Great Job Happies of 2023's to Everyone 🥳🥳
I love the SW Malted Rye but malted rye itself is a divisive flavor. The Rare Stash rant was great. It looked like you wanted to throw it against the wall. LOL! I'd like to have seen OKI Reserve Batch #1 on this list.
It was so fun thinking of all your reviews throughout the year and coming up with what I thought your bottom 8 would be before watching the video. Definitely nailed a few. Gotta love that Rare Stash!!! Cheers
Wow Matt, all seriousness, your killing it! Looking great, slim and trim! The shirt and tie look great! Keep it up, you’re motivating me to actually start getting back in shape
The last one brought me back 55 years to the "talking to, dressing down" by my little league coach when l didn't want to relief pitch in the last inning when we were down 15-0.
Just picked up both of those Smoke Wagon Rye bottles and haven't opened them yet - now I'm a little nervous :) Thanks for another great video and keep up the great work!
my smokewagon uncut unfiltered was a disappointment as it was very thin for a whiskey that is uncut and unfiltered. I am learning that MGP may not be my jam.
2 (maybe 3 questions 🤔) what kentucky owl bourbon batch (and old carter batch) is next to the pheonix 2XO? and what purple top do I see lurking in the shadows of this rare stash video? Happy new year Matt!
Love and appreciate your anger toward Rare Stash. Just went on their website. Have you looked at their tasting notes?!? They literally don't have a single flavor in their description. This is what it says you can expect to taste: The initial taste experience is intense and satisfying, followed by a complex array of flavors that engulf the palate. The finish is long-lasting, tantalizing, yet smooth, with the perfect balance of flavor characteristics and alcohol that will keep you coming back for more. ----- This has to be a joke right?
Funny you mentioned the Calumet 8. I just revisited my bottle a couple days ago, and after being open for a couple years now, it’s way better than the first crack (cherry for dasaays). Give it a shot down the road. Thanks for being the BEST!
Bummer you didn’t enjoy the Lost Monarch cask strength. My expectations were VERY high as well given my love for the regular release but I enjoy the cask strength too. I’ll happily take your backup bottle off your hands haha! Love the videos
I would've done exactly what you did with the lost monarch, but enough videos pointed to it being the least exciting of the bunch. I grabbed the emerald giant instead. It really is fantastic.
So glad I did not purchase any of the bourbons on your list. I hope Calumet 16 is on your good list. I am glad I saw your review of the Calumet 8. I surely would have bought it I had not seen your review. The 14, 15 and 16 are some of my favorites.
My most disappointing purchase was Booker's lumber yard. I've never had Booker's and was excited to get the opportunity to buy and way overpaid. It wasn't anything special. Also I have batch 3 of castle and key and it's pretty solid but definitely young. And finally first time ever watching you. You cracked me up. Loved the video and subscribed which is rare after only watching a single video.
Agree on the Castle & Key. I was really hyped about their bourbon release. They've done an amazing job restoring that beautiful distillery, but the product was a disappointment.
😂😅 I just love to see you be brutally honest and tear the bad bottles apart. Makes me trust you more. You’re not looking to appease the distilleries, or who ever is bottling these Bourbons. Rare Stash BEWARE
Maybe on the Redwood Empire you revisit it after several weeks of being open. You can always add that to your review if your still finishing the video.
I always look forward to MidWinter releases by High West….but this years was so sad. The last two years have been great spice bombs . Unfortunately that was not the case this year. I love a good port finish, but the port covered up everything rye in this year’s release. The spice was subtle, the nose was subtle, and the after palate was non-existent. Idk if they aged it for too long in the barrel or if they used high, age statement port barrels that result in much high residual sugar content but it was too wine-forward sweet. 🙁
Dude you are the friggin Robin Williams of bourbon tasting! I love your discussion of Rare Stash. Made me laugh which does not happen much. Funny shit.
Totally agree with the SW BiB Rye……I was so disappointed mostly because my expectations were so high. I love rye…..I love SW UCUF……sounded like a slam dunk……..but, no.
Thanks Matt! Sorry, but with all the hype out there on bourbon, it was inevitable. Happened to me more than 5 times last year too: here’s whats on my list of shit-headed buys of 2022: 5. BBC Discovery #7 (150$ of thin, uninteresting blended whiskey- i can do better blends, and did with this) #2,3,4, and even 6 were so much better! 4. Larceny BP, C921. (70$) Thin, hot and young. pissed b/c I like the regular Larceny version better, and normally i dig high proof. This one shattered that illusion for me. 3. Hardins Creek, Jacobs Well. (189$ i think, but maybe i paid more than 200$), This wasnt bad, but 15yr Knob Creek + 15yr OGD at 54%abv should taste richer and more flavorful than this. I had high hopes for this, but while its sweet and has a bit of leather/cherry age to it, its just too simple. (I like Calumet 16 quite a bit more than this, and its cheaper and much easier to get) 2. Frank August Single barrel CS. (130$) ima sucker for the pretty bottle & CS. This is what todays ECBP tastes like at 5yr age. Overpriced and underwhelming, considering that ALL of this years ECBP (12yr) is readily available for less $$. Upsetting, but not as bad as #1… 1. VOSN Immaculata (269$) I wanted this to be good bc of the f-ing price tag, but its a NAS blend with a supposed 15yr. Base, but it tastes thin, a bit hot, and simple syrup sweet - like a 6yo. I shoulda known better, and now i do- never buying Vosn bottles again. Overpriced and not even 1/2 as interesting/flavorful as Dickel 17yr reserve. Obviously i spent too much money on subpar whiskey in 2022. Shame on me for that. Shame on whiskey producers for making stuff and charging “special whiskey” prices for bottles that cant live up to the hype.
Rather then being upset about buying two bottles of Lost Monarch, could you just add water and proof them down to essentially make the lower proof version that you enjoy? Perhaps proofing it down a little and you'll like more then the standard version.
"Opened something better, like dogsh!t." OMFG, I used to think "Rare Stash? More like Pure Trash!" was funny but I had pause this video I was laughing so much.
I really appreciate how you separate “bad” from “not my jam.” I think it’s an important distinction and you do it well!
I'm sure with all the bourbon hype going around, the distillers are using the $100 price tag as the new $50. They know before release that the product is not worth the money. We in the bourbon community have to stop feeding into the hype. Thanks for pointing out the barkers.
“If I opened this whiskey for retirement, Id go back to work and have a work accident.” 🤣😂😆
I'm sorry for your disappointments, Matt. However your review and comments on Rare Stash made me laugh out loud! Love you and your videos, Matt! Happy new year to you and yours!
Your hatred for Rare Stash throughout the year has mad me laugh so hard! Unfortunately, at your expense! Happy New Year Porter!!
This video was a first for me because I have never seen a single bottle that you were holding in the entire video, I was dyeing laughing when you went off on the Rare Stash. OMG 🥃Cheers!
What is even more disappointing is seeing you disappointed. You deserve the best you amazing human being. Happy New Year buddy!
This is the worst beating Porier has taken since Charley Olives beat his ass. 10/10. Incredible video Matt
I dumped the castle and key batch 1 down the drain and tossed the bottle in the trash.
Great video! Your rant on Rare Stash was hilarious and well done. Never have I laughed so hard watching a Whiskey Tuber! Well done!
Hey Matt keep doing what you do! I really like the humor in your reviews and your honesty..
Happy 2023 Matt. Hoping 2023 whiskey tube is even better than 2022.
Laughed a ton at this. Thanks for saving me money on that trash. Cheers
I love that you released your least favorite list before your best list this year.
This is my first visit to your channel. I find you hilarious! Well done - worth a sub!
BTW - sorry for your disappointments.
Love the button-up + Tie... you look marvelous Mr. Porter! ;)
This is the kind of video the people need! Subtle signs to buy less whiskey 😂
Nice work doing the dirty work Matt! Thank you!
Looking sharp Whiskey King, yellow tie game on point!
Love you videos bud Allways a great watch. Hope you have a great 2023.
I never regret supporting my local store!
That Castle n Key would be my tops due to the hype.... everyone was so exiceted... waiting in the Tater hope to flip lines... then someone tasted one.... that's some Rare Trash.... Great Job Happies of 2023's to Everyone 🥳🥳
Your wardrobe person outdid themselves today! Very snazzy! Happy New Year!!
I love the SW Malted Rye but malted rye itself is a divisive flavor. The Rare Stash rant was great. It looked like you wanted to throw it against the wall. LOL! I'd like to have seen OKI Reserve Batch #1 on this list.
I’m going to go back to work and have a work accident 😂😂
Well played sir!
Excellent video - thanks for a great list of potholes on the whiskey road!
Your Rare Stash take was my favorite LOL! love your stuff Matt. Keep it going!
It was so fun thinking of all your reviews throughout the year and coming up with what I thought your bottom 8 would be before watching the video. Definitely nailed a few. Gotta love that Rare Stash!!! Cheers
I have never agreed with a list more!!!!!
Si, great content as always!
Very nice. Thank you.
Wow Matt, all seriousness, your killing it! Looking great, slim and trim! The shirt and tie look great! Keep it up, you’re motivating me to actually start getting back in shape
Love the rant on Rare Stash 👌
The last one brought me back 55 years to the "talking to, dressing down" by my little league coach when l didn't want to relief pitch in the last inning when we were down 15-0.
Just picked up both of those Smoke Wagon Rye bottles and haven't opened them yet - now I'm a little nervous :) Thanks for another great video and keep up the great work!
Thanks for keeping it real all year. Nothing worse then a garbage bottle wanting me go back to work. Lol. Cheers brother.
OMG, the last 4 minute rant, I love you man.
The bit on going back to work to have an accident on purpose is hilarious 🤣. Great work as always.
Love your palate. Agree with all of these! (Except the Leadslinger, as I didn’t have that).
Yup. Good list. I haven’t tried all of these, but I agree about the ones I have tried…Thanks for your honesty.
my smokewagon uncut unfiltered was a disappointment as it was very thin for a whiskey that is uncut and unfiltered. I am learning that MGP may not be my jam.

This has to be a joke right?
Made it for the premiere... frickin nailed it!
this is such a good or should I say bad list. Love that you ranked worst purchases. thanks for sharing. cheers.
Totally expected you to slam the Rare Stash on the ground and smash it to bits during that rant lol 😂
Thank you Matt It's great to be the king of whiskey.
Dangggg Matt, is that a double-windsor knot?! Putting us to shame! Keep this up, you'll get that trackhawk before you know it!
You are my hero!! This made my night!!😂😂😂
Keep up the great videos!!
Hahaha 😂 Rare Stash!!! OMG that was awesome! Thanks Pal!
Love the outfit, looking sharp
Funny you mentioned the Calumet 8. I just revisited my bottle a couple days ago, and after being open for a couple years now, it’s way better than the first crack (cherry for dasaays). Give it a shot down the road. Thanks for being the BEST!
I feel the channel name change coming…The Whiskey King 👑
Surprised about the CS Lost Monarch. As a fan of the regular version, the cask strength sounded like it would be amazing.
I thought it was a good pour
All hail the Whiskey King. Love the channel
I would love to find that smoke wagon malted rye. Got to sip on it one time and fell in love.
Beat down! That's a solid rant!
Tell us how you really feel about Rare Stash. Ha! Love this review.
You are the best whiskey Matt I know (not IRL). Keep on keep'n on.
Bummer you didn’t enjoy the Lost Monarch cask strength. My expectations were VERY high as well given my love for the regular release but I enjoy the cask strength too. I’ll happily take your backup bottle off your hands haha! Love the videos
Hey Matt! This was the best terrible list I've seen this year!
"nowhere near up my ass"..... spit out my drink laughing .... thanks! Hands down one of your best videos so far
I would've done exactly what you did with the lost monarch, but enough videos pointed to it being the least exciting of the bunch. I grabbed the emerald giant instead. It really is fantastic.

Agree 100% with the RW Lost Monarch CS. I can’t give that 💩 away. It doesn’t drink well neat or mixed 🤦♂️, it’ll be on my shelf a long, long time.
When you gonna try the newest batch of rare stash? Probably my favorite review of 2022 🤣
I'll be glad to take that castle and Key off your hands. Love the videos as always.
Would love to see if you can blend some of these together and come out with something better.
I totally get the fixation on a dissapointing whisky purchase, especially as another whisky lover who's ADHD AF.
Porter in the house! How was your JD trip??
Agree on the Castle & Key. I was really hyped about their bourbon release. They've done an amazing job restoring that beautiful distillery, but the product was a disappointment.

Hey Matt. Great list of bad whiskeys. You don’t have to remind us about 2020 WTWT just win it again in 2023!
Maybe on the Redwood Empire you revisit it after several weeks of being open. You can always add that to your review if your still finishing the video.
“I would go back to work and have a work accident… And when I got my hand reattached…” omg this cracked me up 🤣🤣
I love your videos so much, you did the opposite of disappoint me

Love the CMU colors, Fire Up
No disappointment for me, you saved me money! Lol Cheers and keep them good videos coming!
Good on you calling out a celebrity cash grab! Too funny!
TH-cam!! Why are you not notifying me the second that Matt drops a video? You use to!! What happened TH-cam? New year, new TH-cam? What the heck!
What do you do with bottles you purchase that you don't like. Do they sit on the shelf forever when you know you won't drink them again? Just curious.
You are genuinely very funny.
Looking forward to the positive!
The only thing that would have made this video better is you smashing that bottle of Rare Stash thank you /// peace
I have been hoping to run across the redwood cask rye
I really liked Lost Monarch so I bought the cask strength and was overly disappointed. Wish I had bought two bottles of the regular bottles……
Dude you are the friggin Robin Williams of bourbon tasting! I love your discussion of Rare Stash. Made me laugh which does not happen much. Funny shit.

Is that a bottle of Green Spot or Blue Spot in the back right next to the Willett 9yr?
my local has a store pick Copper & Cask that's the same 51 rye 49 malt MGP. Cask strength, only 5 years, only paid $55. Was tasty enough.
Rather then being upset about buying two bottles of Lost Monarch, could you just add water and proof them down to essentially make the lower proof version that you enjoy? Perhaps proofing it down a little and you'll like more then the standard version.
that was a classic Rare Rant
"Opened something better, like dogsh!t." OMFG, I used to think "Rare Stash? More like Pure Trash!" was funny but I had pause this video I was laughing so much.
If I opened this for retirement - I'd go back to work ... almost spit out my coffee - Grade A content there
