Thank you for featuring some of my models! Very interesting approach to a video and high production quality as always even though I am not quite sure if I agree with all of your conclusions. I think overall the IDEAS set does a really great job combining display value and playability while working within a certain price range. Piece count and stability are often things MOC designers care very little about. So I think the fan designer and the LEGO pros delivered an amazing product here considering the limitations they had. It is one of my all time favourites.
Absolutely! Tons of respect here 😄 You make excellent points and I’m so glad you bring up those perspectives in the comments for others to see. It’s easy for us to forget about those aspects when we see LEGO’s version of an IDEAS set revealed. I was mentioning to SevenDeadlyStreamers that I had to cut out 9 minutes of final footage to get this out in a reasonable timeframe. The original cut went a bit heavier on how much I loved this build. Definitely wanted to cover more on the set itself. The variety involved, along with packing in so much is very impressive 🙂 This was a such fun experiment to try out. If I continue this series, I’ll think through ways to bring a bit more objectivity into play and spend more time on the conclusions.
Well done with this video, I like this new concept! I purchased the D&D set on day one and got the Mimic dice holder and the paper copy of the adventure book. Overall this was one of the best building experiences I have ever had with my family. They kids each built a module and then we played the campaign together. Their creative was inspired by this set, they even rode the owlbear and displacer beast into the final battle!
So glad you liked the new concept! I wanted to try something different with a LEGO build. This was pretty hard to make and release in a reasonable timeframe 😅 I’m not sure if I’ll stick with this or a “typical” review. I absolutely loved the LEGO build. I wish I had time to let that shine through in the video. I cut out 9 minutes of final footage! My significant other and I loved the build, too! She built one half of it. We wanna play that campaign. It’s so neat to think of a set as an adventure and meshing with such a historic franchise 🙂
People think of dungeons as being the lowest darkest point of the castle where you kept prisoners behind iron bars kind of thing. But this is a relatively recent interpretation of a dungeon or a donjon as it what in the original French. Historically a donjon wasn’t the lowest deepest darkest part of a castle but the highest, tallest tower in a castle that is most heavily fortified and protected from a siege. You see historically speaking the idea of dungeons being like gaols (jails) wasn’t really a thing, They only people worth imprisoning were important people- royalty and aristocracy. Everyone else you won’t keep them locked up, they’d simply be offed. And so the few you did want to imprison, you’d want to keep from harm during a siege and also prevent them from escaping- making the tallest most well fortified part of the castle the ideal place to keep them! So the D&D set does have a Dragon AND a dungeon, just a more historically well thought out dungeon. 🤷
Great view on the difference between the ideas and the sold LEGO products. Very often the fan versions look better but are not worth enough for LEGO EBIT expectations. So pieces are reduced and prints are reduced to stickers. Therefore IDEAS are mostly better 🙂↕️
I like them both but the Lego Ideas one is an improvement to me. The colors really pop on the Lego Ideas one and all the creature designs look great. The original dragon is amazing, but the one Lego did looks equally really good. It's just a different style dragon.
Often unbelievable what Lego Fans are making wirh there Bricks. The Fans sets are often nicer. But like you mentioned. Those ideas in sets will be (to) expensive
Who did it better? LEGO or the fan designs? 🤔

The fans! So many cool designs, but my favorites are “Entering the Dragons Lair” and “D&D Red Box”. Great comparison video!
I love how accurate that Red Box is!
Nice video as always!
Thanks DB! 🙂

Wow, thank you for the context! I didn’t know that 🤔

Nice idea !
Cool idea for a video. Hope you make a series out of it.
So glad you liked it! Let’s see how it does 🤞
I liked the original fan design of the D&D set more than what Lego ended up releasing.
For sure, I can definitely see why fans like that one better 🙂

Great callouts, Amy 🙂

For sure! I’m honestly always amazed by what I see when I go searching for sets to showcase on this channel 🙂
Fan design is better
