    The original Pretenders had that "magic chemistry" that every band hopes for but very few bands have. The energy and talent so clearly visible here is incredible. RIP Jimmy & Pete.

      I was JUST thinking what you said in this comment. The Pretenders, before they self destructed could blow anyone away, imho! My ex-wife and I went to see them in Houston, but it was too late. The band was already half dead. They were still really good, but like my ex said, it was sort of a weird concert, a little bit creepy. But we were way big fans, that's for sure. Such a shame what happened.

    Tattooed Love Boys is the song I always think of when I hear someone talk about "Stripped back RAW Rock n Roll". That first Pretenders album should be a benchmark any aspiring rock band would hope to equal. That first iteration of that band was simply spectacular. James Honeyman-Scott was a force of nature that IMO never got his due as the amazing guitarist he was. The energy he brought to the early Pretenders sound was palpable. It's amazing that Chrissy continued through all the death that band experienced over the years, and she's still rockin today!

      Brilliant Rock Band! And Hyndes sultry and sexy vocals made this bands music special and she looked so fine with those bangs. But her unique voice really stands out! What a gift she has plus she writes good songs! Amazing story too! It’s like a fairytale! She’s from Akron, Ohio where they made all the Tires 🛞 for America and it’s mainly an industrial town. Devo are from there as well.
      So she gets into the British Invasion and works as a waitress so that’s taking her nowhere fast. So she finally decides to move to London to try to get into the music scene and become a musician. That took vision and guts to do that. Luckily, she didn’t have to learn another language. So she found her band and wrote an album and viola! The Pretenders debut is a smash hit just after the Punk explosion 💥 faded away. So they become the hottest band in Britain and tour to sold out crowds. Then they tour America and become headliners and they arrived to the big time. They release a second album and repeat the success. Then they have a tragic loss of two bandmates from drugs. But luckily Hynde keeps going and Learning to Crawl is another hit album proving that she has staying power. Mainly because of her magical voice! And she’s still touring with her latest band today! And she still sounds great! What a career and triumph!
      👏🏻

    The guitar sound James got and the tight mean rhythm Chrissie laid down was so damn cool. To get that unique a sound with that simple a combination is testament to their incredible talent. Chrissie was the real beginning of the revolution that played out. Sexy beyond belief and whipsmart. She definitely had my teenage attention and still does.

    Man I miss these days although I was only 10 years old in 82 I grew up through the 80s it was already played drums and then started playing guitar around 15 and haven't stopped since. Just the bands were so much better back then because you had to be able to play, the studios were all analog and any mistake would stick out like a sore thumb you didn't have Pro Tools and Auto-Tune to fix stuff like you could today you'd have to go back and do it again until it was right. But anyway, the bands were just so much better back then, this version of The Pretenders just had it, you know when they say you either got it or you don't , well they had it.

    A few things I remember about seeing them live in 1980 or 81(?) was how f**king cool Pete Farndon was. Me and my friends were against the stage right in front of him the whole show and he handed my friend a coke, would toss us picks, the setlist, an errant drumstick etc and generally interacting with the fans like we were old friends. He had a coolness factor about him that was unique. Another thing that had me laughing while watching this video was at 3:15 and 5:15 when she picks up a drumstick and flings into the audience. At the show I was at she got hit in the back of the head with Martins flying drumsticks and later tripped and fell on stage, either on her guitar chord or another of Martins loose sticks. I wonder if Martin Chambers had a habit of dropping his sticks and it looks like she was keeping an eye out for crap on stage.

    This is the business people make no farking error. The Pretenders at their ultimate best. As of now (14/08/2018) I see at the top there is 126 likes and NO dislikes indicating just how farking great these songs are. So pissed I never saw this crew live as I'm 55 dis year and in hindsight I so should have seen them when they were over our way here in New Zealand. However as I live at the bottom of the South Island air travel can be expensive. Yeh I know that's NO excuse. A quality American band make no error - with a tragic story as well. For me the earlier Pretenders was my fav era as it was obviously rawer and more cutting edge to their later...er...'pop' -ier sounding stuff shall we say. Well there's no denying it was more sanitized, softer, and oh here we go again 'commercialized'. Well it was as that's what the record farking companies demand - as it sells mega $ see - so all the gravy-farking-trainers of the music buso can all get their cut. So did The Pretenders sell their more punk roots soul to the devil? You betcha! And what band didn't/doesn't? Even Metallica sold their soul. Few bands/artists did/do. I'll name one that didn't and I don't care if they're pomes; The Sex Pistols. Ok want another one? The Ramones.

      Well put. Every band matures and realizes that you have to compromise your art for the sake of making "pop" music for the teenie bopper set and rake in the cash while you're still a marketable item. I really wish I had saw them too. What a perfect line up. And they had such fun with each other. However I did see the Ramones in my state of Connecticut back in 1985. I lost the hearing in my LEFT ear for 3 days . They were so LOUD !!!!

      Did the Jam sell theirs?

    • @Blackscorpion1963
      @Blackscorpion1963 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duffbaker9554 Well according to Wikipedia as far as the break up of The Jam is concerned; 'The decision to split was solely Weller's. Explaining at the time that he disliked the idea of continuing for as long as possible simply because they were successful, he later told the Daily Mirror in advance of a 2015 Sky documentary on the band, "I wanted to end it to see what else I was capable of, and I'm still sure we stopped at the right time. I'm proud of what we did but I didn't want to dilute it, or for us to get embarrassing by trying to go on forever. We finished at our peak. I think we had achieved all we wanted or needed to, both commercially and artistically." Weller's decision to move on, announced by his father, the band's manager, at an extraordinary band meeting in the summer of 1982, "came as a shock" to Buckler and Foxton, who wanted to keep the band together. Buckler told the Woking News and Mail in 2012: "It was like we were going to be driving over a cliff at the end of the year, and you keep thinking 'Well, maybe he'll change his mind'’. Both Buckler and Foxton described the experience as bitter, but in later years both expressed understanding, if not complete acceptance. Following the split, Foxton did not speak to Weller for over 20 years, and Buckler said in 2015 that he still had not spoken to Weller since, despite repeated attempts by Buckler and Foxton in 1983 and 1984 to meet up with and talk to Weller. As the farewell tour neared its end, Polydor released a live album titled Dig the New Breed, a collection of songs from various concert performances over the band's five-year career which, while commercially successful, met with mixed reviews. The month after the final concert in Brighton, Polydor predictably re-released all sixteen of the band's singles, nine of which re-entered the UK charts on 22 January 1983.

    I saw the band at a club called The Grey Topper, Jacksdale, The crowd started spitting, Chrissie threatened to come off stage if they did not stop, they stopped. the crowd was just over 100 people, i could have reached out and touched them i was that close to the stage.

    My Fantasy: Bump into her in NYC in a store or a bakery....introduce myself and ask her for a quick chat and tea or coffee. She agrees! I say, "What are you doing tonight," and she says, "Chillin at the hotel." I say. "Let's chill together, and I'll show you my Spotify if you show me yours." She breaks up laughing and says, "Ok. You're on. Eight sharp. Tonight. Bring your A game play list."
