How To Install A Cable Steering System On Your Boat

Installing or replacing a mechanical cable steering system on your boat is definitely something you can do yourself. In this video we run through installing the cables, fitting the helm and attaching the cables to an outboard engine.

So just to double check the steel rod slides inside the black casing, while the black casing remains fixed in place? Looks that way.
Best way to measure is get a garden hose out it where you want the steering cable to go then add 2.5 feet to easy

This would be a breeze for me But,,,The drum steering system I took out had an adapter to let the wheel sit at a 15 deg angle to the hull. Now I need advice on how to mount my new rotary system to allow the wheel to be mounted at the same angle. I am fitting it to a 1970 Sea Nymph, V13 and would like to keep it looking as original as possible. Any ideas??
Will this kit work on a 2013 60hp Mercury? I'm wanting to convert a tiller steer to console.
Was it just me, or did the motor look like it turned farther one way than the other? Is this normal? That's what my boat is doing now and was thinking about replacing the cable.
how do you deal with the 90 deg angles that the cable has to go round to get to the engine, a few well placed roller assemblies perhaps? If so what did you use?

Good video simple and quick. If you can't stand the music maybe the cable Chang you shouldn't do, it's not rocket science.
What if when the install is complete, the steering wheel isn’t straight? How do you correct the wheel so it looks “proper”? With the Woodruff key, there are only so-many positions available to adjust the wheel on the shaft. Mine won’t align to looking proper.
Not sure we’ll get a reply to such an old video, but I’m here searching for this same answer as well. My wheel is essentially sideways while the outboard is straight. It’s not something you ever get comfortable with while making long runs...

any advice on removing the teleflex cable nut that is frozen on the motor?
Generally when the nut is like this it is time to replace the cable. You could use a hacksaw and make cuts in 2 places and then try and unscrew the nut. It should break and cable will come free.

Burnsco that's a bloody rough and amateur way. Simple heat and vice grips in case cable moves with the nut
