  • I've had my eye out for a budget 650 bike that I could use to help me get the top tier motorcycle endorsement in Utah. I'm hoping this old fixer-upper will do the trick.

Welcome to the 650 club Tyler! I didn’t even register my bike last year because I was so busy. Now I have another reason to get it registered. We should go ride this summer.

Nice score! Always fun to have a project to work on.

Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. I’m having to resist spending money on the cosmetic stuff until I’m sure the engine is sorted out, and it’s kinda tough. I did sand and paint the rusty tail rack though 😂

What a steal on that bike !

I’m pretty excited about it. It’ll be a scavenger hunt finding some of the parts, but that’s kinda fun too.

I have a non running 1996 Honda XR250r in my garage. The cost of engine work has made my cheap bike cost more than a new bike. But some bikes are worth it. Also it is a really great bike to learn how to “wrench on”.
In my experience, I found that every part had significant wear. New engine parts were too expensive. So I bought a cylinder jug and head from eBay. Those parts still needed to go to the machine shop.
Have fun, upgrade your license and don’t let the DR sit untouched. Start the engine regularly because that may help prolong it’s life.

Yeah, I can see parts getting expensive. I’ve already ordered some used stuff from eBay, and a couple things from over seas because no domestic shops had them. And it will definitely be an education. For starters I had no idea that a single cylinder engine could have two spark plugs. And I’d never even heard of a decompressor 😂

@@HighDesertHills that is pretty awesome, thanks for the videos.

I saw a 2023 DR650 in a dealer recently. It really hasn't changed that much. Hopefully the click is just the valves.

Im hoping so. It could also be the decompressor, which I didn’t even know was a thing. It’s missing a spring and the electric actuator. I’ve ordered those bits, so we’ll see 🤞

Before you start tearing this apart, check to see if major components are even available. This may not be worth it. You’ll find out.

Yeah, I’ve been ordering a few things already from literally all over the world. It looks like The major engine components aren’t going to be a problem though. Most of those are still available from OEM suppliers. I may have to get creative with some of the other things.

Cool. It'll be fun to follow the fix on the old DR.

I’m sure it will be a learning experience for me. I already had a surprise when I found out it had two spark plugs 😂

Long time having a Utah motorcycle license endorsement. Never heard of the tiered endorsement you mentioned?? Have owned 250 to 1300cc bikes.

    • @HighDesertHills
      @HighDesertHills  ปีที่แล้ว

I believe it happened in 2008. Anyone who had a motorcycle endorsement prior to that is exempt from the tiered system.
