A well sorted DR650 is unbeatable light adventure in my opinion. No frills and easily repairable. Mine is setup almost identical with exception of the yenkro fairing and a TM40. I would suggest a few more dollars spent on the pegs with the pivot pegz. Love them. Safe Adventures!
Amazing video! Really comprehensive. I recently bought a 1996 DR650 here in the UK (very rare) and have done quite a few of the upgrades already. I plan to ride the DR650 from London to Bangkok when i turn 50 in 7 years time. Thanks for a great video guys and subscribed!!
Thanks for all the info. A couple of questions, what is the top box? Also, I’m planning a similar trip and have the 20L tank that came with my DR, from your experience will that be enough? Don’t really wanna fork out for an extra 5L.. I’ve already mapped out my Australia leg and should be sweet there..
Fuses, tubes, generic nuts, bolts, spark plugs and o-rings. We try to organise parts ahead of when needed. South East Asia was a little difficult to source, it is possible to get international deliveries however.
Great videos guys. Looking forward to episode 6. Be interested to know approx how many kms you had when your clutches gave out. Prepping a bike atm for a similar ride next year and wondering if to do the hd clutch. Cheers and stay safe.
Hey Wayne, we were around 30,000kms when our clutches started to go in Vietnam. I think you could expect a little more out of them depending on bike weight and riding style.
Wow, a lot of money for accessories. I am a new owner of a DR650. I will start with a seat, a riser, and a tank. I was hesitating between the seat concept and the seat sargent. After having traveled so many kilometers, would you still take the sargent seat? Thanks for all the research to find the right accessories and thanks for your video. Alain from Canada
Hey Alain, a comfort seat of some type was a must have for us, we still get saddle sores when we do a few big days in a row. Perhaps you could pick one up for the cheap on facebook marketplace or the like.
I have both. The Sargent is a far better seat than the SC, better made and more comfortable. I have owned a hand full of of SCs including one for my DR. Keep an eye on the Sargent website, they go on sale on occasion.
Wanted to add a note on a couple of points you raised here. First it is allot of money for parts and you don't need to start that way after dropping the $ for a bike you're not familiar with. I've added an 80 (CAD) $ rack on the back to facilitate bungee attachments. I've got about 6k kms on the bike and have changed nothing else. The seat is not the greatest but I suggest finding out it's relationship to your arse. I've done ~400-500kms days with the stock seat. Note it's almost all paved but when you're offroad, you'll stand allot and you get a butt break that way. I'd also venture that saddle sores can be aided with what you're wearing (think ankle blisters on new running shoes and short socks!). This is my personal philosophy for all of it. Fix what doesn't work, leave the rest alone. Take your time, enjoy the ride!
People praise the DR650 a lot. But then I see these videos where so many upgrades were made. I think I'd rather go with something that requires fewer mods.
We had passengers at various points (as well as their gear) and the bikes handled fine! A bigger bike might handle the load better, but can't imagine they would be easy to offroad.
@@Daniel-zh8lh hey Daniel, Jordan is 6’2” and a pretty solid bloke, Ben is pushing 6’5”. We found them much better once you raise the handlebars and lower the pegs. Upgrading springs/shocks will make them ride a lot nicer with bigger loads.
Excellent choice. The DR650 is a legend.
One of the best informational adventure build vids, thanks for sharing!!
Lads, what a monumental adventure you have going! We wish you nothing but the best and safe travels. Cheers - Sam
Just bought my first DR650! Excited to start the journey into ADV life! What an adventure. If you make it over to the US! keep us in the loop!
Love seeing these mods videos. Great trip guys. Thanks for the video and good luck on the rest of the adventure if that's ongoing.
the editing is kino lads

Hey mate, Ben has a B&W type 5500 on his, very similar to a Pelican case.
Wondering what bike spares you are carrying with you. How do you plan to get any parts on the road you don't have?

Seat Concepts 100% of the time.

Sooner or later ure gonna do mods to every bike. That's part of the fun 😁
To me that's the appeal. Its such a versatile bike that you can mod it to your needs as your needs evolve and change
Anyone ride two up on the dr? I had a klr, but looking at the dr for my next bike

@Ape_Venture thanks, good to hear. I just saw pro cycle offers a lowering kit for the rear pegs which should help
Hey fellas how tall are you? I hear a lot of mixed opinions on how the DR fairs for taller/heavier riders
