Playing off your commanding officer's prejudice to secure yourself a wee dram of the good stuff, whilst annoying your friend and immediate superior to try and teach him a lesson after he tried to get you to visit the surgeon. That's soldiering.
HMiche93 Ikr. If all soldiers in that battalion faint due to fatigue or heat stroke, he better be quick flogging them or he be suited to follow them as well.
Common doctrine at the time was to punish not to discipline the man, but to make the others fear the punishment. The reason is literally shown in the clip; one of the riflemen 'faints' right after seeing the comrade get to rest in the wagon. If you were an enlisted man and thought you would be whipped for collapsing....you wouldn't want to collapse.
I feel bad for Bamfield, he didn't mean to be the bad guy of the film he just lacked experience and wanted to be recognised as an officer! Great writing on this film
Passing out on the march isn’t very good soldiering; malingering to take a rest definitely isn’t soldiering; but caring for the welfare of your men and spotting malingerers in a tic is damned fine soldiering! It’s also good officership.
Is it just me, or do the videos seem a bit... out of order? I mean, in the last video Riley was collapsing from a sword, now he’s collapsing from “fatigue.” Doesn’t seem right.
Irony of this whole plot line is that Bordeaux did revolt against Napoleon and british troops took it without a fight, finding the city draped in the white of the bourbon kings.
Funny thing is, there's no nerves inside the eyeball itself, only behind it, so as long as you aren't putting significant pressure on the ball, you can actually shove a needle in the eye without much feeling at all.
I didn't read the book, nor see the movie (just love those Sharpe clips), nor am I very familiar with the invasion of France from the coalition. But, as a Bordelais, I want to say that I was very surprised to see my city featured here. I am pretty sure that Bordeaux might be the least strategically important city of France. It seat in the South West corner of France, far from every major regions of France that are mostly in the East and the North. It's only use is to be the seat of French governments when Paris is threatened, exactly because it's far away. Except during internal conflicts, Bordeaux might be the city who saw the least fight in France, maybe in Europe. Invading France by Bordeaux is like invading Australia by Perth. Completely waste of time.
The Peninsular War was taking place in Iberia. Many Spaniards were not very fond of Napoleon placing his brother on the Spanish throne. The British, Portuguese, and Spanish pushed out through Portugal (Their closest ally) and were going through Spain to get into France. At that point as well they were trying to insight any sort of rebellion against Napoleon. Losing large cities to the enemy generally upsets a population.
Well, putting a disgruntled soldier on guard duty is not the best decision as he would be in a prime position to desert and/or provide crucial intel to any nearby enemy.
Being caught doing something you shouldn't do is not grounds to get disgruntled. You take responsibility for your actions in the military and accept consequences. Those lads would've more honour than to give up their mates just because of a telling off
@@1Loftwing1 this was Sharpe's Company, in this episode he was on the sick list, because of his toth, but want to stay with Sharpe and the lads. Banfield didn't know him, and get some Brandy would be much easier as he pretend to be a just a poor Rifleman, disliked by Sharpe, and not a Serjeant 😉
