Here's what's about to happen. We will run it back, go first in division or NHL. Lose second round and Tavares and Marner will be resigned at about the same for 8 years. I quit being a leafs fan.
I know Calgary lost the Tkachuk trade but Huberdeau & Weegar scored 14 more goals than Tkachuk this season. If Huby goes back to being an 80 point guy, Calgary won (again). Weegar is a stud RHD who just clapped 20 goals.
Weegar and Huby together make $17m a year. Chucky makes $9.5m and has led his team to a Final and a Championship. The Flames are never winning that trade
CHL gives each player in the league a full ride scholarship to college for each year they play in the league. So even though they're not directly a college team they get a free college education all the same.
So what I learned from this episode is that the Leafs should blow it up or lose Marner for nothing. The core 4 contracts have skewed the salary cap percentages to a point where they are irredeemable. The top 4 have proven they can’t get it done themselves. The Leafs can’t surround them with better players because of how much they make. When JT’s contract is done Steve explained how it doesn’t matter. Best case is somebody gives the Leafs something for Marner but I don’t see it happening without retention. Most likely Marner walks during the off season and the Leafs try and spend whatever money they save on a top flight D. Except those aren’t available very often and that’s another wasted year of Mathews.
The trick in that comment is that Steve failed to tell us that Oilers are all up to be resigned and will be higher than the Leafs. This is all cancel culture behavior towards Mitch Marner. @@jeffe2267 So glad you said that, the cancel culture on Mitch Marner is hard at work and very sadly, Steve has decided to join in, all one needs to do is look at Steve Stamkos and Steve Yzerman's past to see when they blossomed into difference makers, when they finally had proper support. To blame Mitch Marner for the Leafs failures whilst I might add leading all Leafs in playoff points, is absolutely idiotic.
Right, so we're realizing that cap increase doesn't necessarily mean you can improve your team with the new money. Minimum, maximum, and everything in between will scale up, in addition, ALL other teams will have the same extra money! So you're left with essentially the same buying power you had. You have to improve your team in other ways.
Genuinely appreciate the inside voice rant. Steve your screamy man mode can be entertaining but you make a lot of good points and in the podcast format I prefer just to hear you make your points this way
@15:14 "you cant go to NCAA in high school" while having a conversation about a high school-aged player who played in the NCAA (Macklin Cellebrini should be in grade 12 but he skipped a year of school) MAN YOU GUYS SUCK
When they first showed Brad's video, I thought he was Al Bundy. Cap space? The Leafs pay extra to get anyone to play in Toronto. Mind you, I'm not bought-and-paid-for, nor am I contractually obligated, so I'm free to laugh at the Kool-Aid peddlers.
You also probably understand what it takes to be a winner, which is more than I can say for most Leafs fans that seem to want the same comfort food of empty regular season cardio numbers and no playoff success. The Leafs front office and ownership seems to want that too, so maybe those fans want a job working for the Leafs to keep with the trend.
Steve’s analogy of Joseph Woll being like a really good trailer that makes us want to watch the movie instantly makes me think of the 2014 Godzilla trailer with the paratroopers jumping out of the plane..God that movie didn’t match the trailer
I’m sorry but Adam screaming for Woll to EARN IT was so frustrating. The whole idea is there’s no world where he earns 3x4; he either earns 5+ off a great season or less because he’s hurt, but the bet is that he’ll be great and they get a discount. Players do need to earn their money, I agree, but it won’t work in this case.
It would be interesting to hear Steve's indoor voice discussion after the free agents and RFAs signings are done. At this moment in time, there are a lot of overpays just waiting to be factored into a lot of teams caps coming up.
The new Ownership Management is not short term. I could see them directing Player Personnel to let this "experiment" play out. Get what you can for Marner or let the contract expire, along with John Tavares', all the while looking for that ten-million-dollar RD. (not a re-signed 14 million RW ) Not a re-tool on the fly. But like Steve suggests, a re-design on the fly. If John wants to finish here, give him a low cap, 2-year, contract to retirement. He is invaluable to the dressing room, and probably wants to bring a Cup back to Toronto more than we realize. That's what Montreal should have done with Markov. That kind of math allows much more flexibility. Remember. New Ownership Management.
Disagree with the opinion that grade 13 was stupid. It was a great idea. Now you have 17 year old kids heading off to university (way more expensive than back in my day) who aren't mature enough to handle it. If they can't, then a year is wasted and mucho money down the drain. Why do so many kids have gap years? They aren't ready. Especially when you consider that the human pre-frontal cortex does not fully develop until at least 25 years old. Besides, it was fun.😀
Tbh, the HHOF committee seems like the NHL itself. It's a Good Ole Boy's Club, as UrinatingTree has said in the past. It's why Colin Campbell got in and how Harold Ballard somehow is still in
Adam’s fixation on Sutter ‘ruining’ the Flames is hilarious. I dont think Sutter is some genius, but the team objectively played better under him than they did the guy’s replacement. He’d just rather blame a coach than admit his buddy Allan’s client is overpaid trash
The dude went from being a perennial 75-90 point player to a 15 goal 50 point player, so saying he's trash is just a ridiculous take. He was elevated by Barkov, but something else is causing his drop in production. Could be personal, could be the system he's playing in. But saying he butted heads with Sutter is a far smarter take than your brain dead opinion of "he's trash"
Steve talking like this year wasnt a cap squeeze year no matter what. That Tavares deal ending is what will free them up next year in addition to a cap raise. Steve explaining that player good make more money is annoying.
I have a feeling this season is going to be brutal. Marner resigns. Bertuzzi and maybe Domi walk. Woll and Jones tandem in goal, if they can stay healthy. They struggle to get 20 players. Wait for Tavares contract to drop and let him walk or resign him for way less. Probably miss the playoffs. THEN start doing things to build. The window is going to be closing awful quick with a wasted year this season.
They can actually reopen the window if they miss the playoffs at some point, they need a Youth movement again, and they don't have one coming. Every good team has a several youth movements and a retool year to keep their window open. Leafs haven't had that yet bc they keep going into win now mode while Tavares is still good. Means they never give young guys a proper chance too so they can't see what they actually have in guys.
I think the Wings dumped Wallman to gain cap space and a roster spot. Who knows if they are going to sign a FA, I think he was more interested in the cap and roster spot for guys that need to be brought up.
Mitch Marner had 1 goal in 7 games in this years playoffs, shying away from contact+puck pursuit multiple times while being injury free...Yeah he is a "Star" alright!
And even with that, he still has more playoff points than Matthews and Nylander... so there's that. The reality is, none of them have done particularly well, and are overpaid.
@@steelhalfelven29 nylander and mathews were hurt in these playoffs and still contributed more. he only threw a tantrum on the bench. Have u watched him at all? Was a non factor fir 7 games
@scienection7261 to clarify- my comment was regarding career points. They're all within a couple games of each other in this regard. Yes, I watch the games- temper tantrums or not, the other two still don't post more points- and as it turns out, that's what wins games. Is he perfect? Far from it. But my point was that everyone praising Matthews and Nylander, while bashing Marner, is ridiculous, and entirely feelings-based BS. Have a good one.
@@steelhalfelven29 you need to get better glasses if u watch Marner play. Softest player on the team. Most overpaid player after Tavarez on the Team. Leafs HAVE TO get rid of him even if for free NOW
Avs have no goalie? the Leafs have scared of the puck sammy and a rookie. Georgiev had the worst season of his career and Annunen has been a good backup. Nichuskins contract will most likely be terminated at some point- it would be wild if the NHL punish the Avs for seeking out help for their player through the program. Every team has its flaws- but the Leafs have built a team that needs all the breaks they can get to succeed.
It's just like real world. Your salary goes up, but so does the price of everything, so you're in fact earning less, because of inflation. Same goes here. The cap is going up, but so is the price of 3 guys, so you're even worse off than before. The percentage is humongous. Over 50 % of the cap. Yikes. Boo hiss and everything, get rid of it. Though I'm not really sure who would take the bait with just 1 year left. And no one is getting Tavares.
Look, Woll getting a raise makes sense. He makes league min right now. I can live with 3.5 which is what Sammy was making and he's objectively better than Sammy.
Guys you are so obsessed by this that you just jump over what has been wrong all along. The Leafs simply have no defence. screw getting bertuzzi or Domi(unless he drops his demands) This isn't about the core 4, you just talked about dropping Traveras and it not making a difference. WTF that turns core 4 to core 3. Use the money on defence and fill the holes in the forward postions with player coming up the pipe and through trades.
My problem is it's the same argument every podcast instead of looking at letting some forwards walk and replacing them with youth (which they desperately need to see what they have with guys like Steeves, etc) they need a retool year and spend their money on defense. They need another youth movement, they're too slow and can't score outside of 3-4 guys. The core 4 or their cap percentages really isn't the main issue
The fact that Leafs fans still want to come after Steve for pointing out the flaws in keeping Marner just shows me that Leafs fans don't want a winning team. They just want a team that puts up empty cardio in the regular season putting up empty goal totals and empty point numbers and then loses in round 1 to a better constructed team with actual Cup aspirations. For a franchise whose last Conference Final appearance (not Cup Final, Conference Final) is old enough to drink in the US and whose most notable recent accomplishment is still losing to a 42 year old Zamboni driver who works for them (with this core btw), that is such a sad way to be as a fanbase. I'm happy that the team I root for has fans that actually want a contender because I can't imagine being so content with a team that never gets anywhere in the playoffs and actually lashes out at the few people that want more from that team.
the problem is oh great you got rid of Marner. How do you replace it? Everything he said about Tavares and playing other players holds the same with Marner. Unless they can somehow swing a top defenseman for him it makes no sense.
@@killzone866 So, you don't want a winning team, then. Sometimes, you have to acknowledge that a team as constructed doesn't work and needs to be changed. If you can't do that, you don't want a winning team and you can't justify that.
@@Jrodsly the problem is i have a functioning brain. I am no trading him for literal pennies on the dollar when i have absolutely no way to replace taht production. Instead of thinking about how they will perform in the playoffs we will be wondering why they are competing for the last wildcard. They had a chance to make the move but of course shannahan (who should have been fired when Dubas was since that was his guy) refused to move off him.
@@killzone866The problem is you keep getting hung up on who's going to replace Marner. You all keep thinking he's some kind of sacred cow and they'll never replace his production. What they would get is cap space. With Marner's contract off the books, they could actually go after $5-6M top pairing defenseman and 2 depth forwards that play a physical game and are built for the playoffs. Simply keeping Marner because of his regular season production helps the team in no way. This guy had 3 points in 7 games, and he makes $10.93M. He, just like the rest of the core, is not even a point a game player in the playoffs. And would you rather they just keep him to keep him and let him walk in free agency and lose him for nothing? All so the Leafs can have his precious regular season production for one more year.

Florida won the cup. They won the trade lol
The discussion of CHL vs NCAA has been going on for many years. It depends on what you are looking for as a player and a person.
Definition of insanity is going the same thing over and over and expecting a different result
This is one of the worst, most untrue cliches.
so podcasting/
The trick in that comment is that Steve failed to tell us that Oilers are all up to be resigned and will be higher than the Leafs. This is all cancel culture behavior towards Mitch Marner. To get a better handle on Marner listen to Real Kyper and Bourne show aired this past Friday from 19:31 to 22:19
@@jeffe2267 So glad you said that, the cancel culture on Mitch Marner is hard at work and very sadly, Steve has decided to join in, all one needs to do is look at Steve Stamkos and Steve Yzerman's past to see when they blossomed into difference makers, when they finally had proper support. To blame Mitch Marner for the Leafs failures whilst I might add leading all Leafs in playoff points, is absolutely idiotic.
2 hours. Bless !
Right!?
Right, so we're realizing that cap increase doesn't necessarily mean you can improve your team with the new money. Minimum, maximum, and everything in between will scale up, in addition, ALL other teams will have the same extra money! So you're left with essentially the same buying power you had. You have to improve your team in other ways.
CHL pays your university also
Genuinely appreciate the inside voice rant. Steve your screamy man mode can be entertaining but you make a lot of good points and in the podcast format I prefer just to hear you make your points this way
Dear Carolina, you will likely have at least 1 forward spot available. Its not the best option, but bring Jeff to the playoffs
Steve, the criteria is 3 years since your last professional hockey game, not 3 years since you announced your retirement.
@15:14 "you cant go to NCAA in high school"
while having a conversation about a high school-aged player who played in the NCAA (Macklin Cellebrini should be in grade 12 but he skipped a year of school)
MAN YOU GUYS SUCK
It's disgusting that you guys talk for a whole month and take so much joy and pride. Someone's sexuality over people that died for this country
12.5m for Marner. Haha 😅 Why are these Toronto superstars like this? They are like football (european) divas who that people eventually get sick at
Let’s make Mitch a dman if they don’t trade him then 😂😂😂
My inner 13 year old boy is a bit disappointed you didn't name this episode "Touch Wood".
So you either make a lot of money and hope to have the worlds best GM, or take a pay cut and win the cup.
Steve’s analogy of Joseph Woll being like a really good trailer that makes us want to watch the movie instantly makes me think of the 2014 Godzilla trailer with the paratroopers jumping out of the plane..God that movie didn’t match the trailer
Good lord did Adam only see Roenick play after the 2005 lockout. Second line Center? What an egregious take.
Roenick should have been in a long time ago , his politics kept him out which should not happen . well deserved entry into the Hall
I guess his 500 goals were a fluke
It's Adam he doesnt seem to put much thought into most things he says
Adam is shocking
I’m sorry but Adam screaming for Woll to EARN IT was so frustrating. The whole idea is there’s no world where he earns 3x4; he either earns 5+ off a great season or less because he’s hurt, but the bet is that he’ll be great and they get a discount.
Players do need to earn their money, I agree, but it won’t work in this case.
It would be interesting to hear Steve's indoor voice discussion after the free agents and RFAs signings are done. At this moment in time, there are a lot of overpays just waiting to be factored into a lot of teams caps coming up.
Keep Mathew’s and change everything else, still 4-5 years away from doing anything in the playoffs, not a lot in the minors, badly run team
Lou will die on the job and no one will notice until the next free agency/trade deadline day
The new Ownership Management is not short term.
It's why Colin Campbell got in and how Harold Ballard somehow is still in
Here is a question about every pro hockey player: At what point in his career has a player reached a point where 'he is what he is'?
Adam’s fixation on Sutter ‘ruining’ the Flames is hilarious. I dont think Sutter is some genius, but the team objectively played better under him than they did the guy’s replacement. He’d just rather blame a coach than admit his buddy Allan’s client is overpaid trash
Is Kadri & Andersen a Loss for Marner?
@@noomJbrother that would be phenomenal and you’re not getting that
The dude went from being a perennial 75-90 point player to a 15 goal 50 point player, so saying he's trash is just a ridiculous take. He was elevated by Barkov, but something else is causing his drop in production. Could be personal, could be the system he's playing in. But saying he butted heads with Sutter is a far smarter take than your brain dead opinion of "he's trash"
This one is an indoor voice rant.
The loud one later is going to be blockbuster.
BEDARD and Celebrini are both from North Vancouver
Vincent Lecavalier was traded from the Flyers to the LA Kings in 2016 and retired at the end of the season.
Steve talking like this year wasnt a cap squeeze year no matter what. That Tavares deal ending is what will free them up next year in addition to a cap raise. Steve explaining that player good make more money is annoying.
Steve Dangle is one of the Leafs" fans who "get it."
@8:56 why is Macklin Celebrini being a good hockey player bad news for Canadian Olympics?
this episode makes no sense.
I laugh when people think he’s better than Rantanen lol. #4 in active playoff scoring
Leafs HAVE TO get rid of him even if for free NOW
Islanders still have a 1.5 million cap hit for Rick DiPietro for another 5 seasons.
No they don't. It was a compliance buyout which doesn't go against the cap. They are paying him 1.5 million for 5 more seasons.
First: and?
Second: it doesn't count against the cap.
Matt Roy would be a great RD2 addition but would likely cost 4.5-5.5M
So he's basically a straight replacement for Brodie
thats fine hes a brodie replacement.
Steve is amazing! His 116 second spiel was the better than any ‘hockey analyst’ could do (not a slight at Steve at all). What a true pro!
Swayman is makes 10mil
Oliers need a goalie
Florida has 12 free agents
Rangers need a bridge deal
Vegas hmmm
Colorado has no goalie either
Avs have no goalie? the Leafs have scared of the puck sammy and a rookie. Georgiev had the worst season of his career and Annunen has been a good backup. Nichuskins contract will most likely be terminated at some point- it would be wild if the NHL punish the Avs for seeking out help for their player through the program.
Every team has its flaws- but the Leafs have built a team that needs all the breaks they can get to succeed.
Weird that a team's ability to get away with murder seems to just follow Gregory Campbell around the league.
the final segment can also be called why the florida panthers won the cup and have made back to back finals
The leafs have a long history of destroying goalies careers, and reputations
“We got some cap space”
Sure you do Brad.
As a flames fan it’s fun to watch leaf fans speculate on what Brad will do while we know what Brad will do. “I’m on everything, does nothing”
WTF is the HOF a popularity contest not a HOCKEY HoF
put Alex in
Grade 13? Come on. No ONE called it grade 13. It was OAC...remember OACs?
Best move the Leafs could make is trade our management for Vega's management. Problem solved
Celebrini must be Canadian. He played for us at the World Juniors and was originally on our roster for the Men's World team
The equation is flawed if you don't take the 4th highest paid player into account. Lose Tavares enter Rielly at 7.5m to maintain a "core 4"
its really funny how that narrative starts to fall apart next year but then Steve is like you have to pay your good players.
Look, Woll getting a raise makes sense. He makes league min right now. I can live with 3.5 which is what Sammy was making and he's objectively better than Sammy.
Jesse casually declaring that Bouchard is on the same level as Makar....smh
They dont watch the west, except for the Oilers lol
He's better
@@Meeces55 he wish
It was a joke.
Why don't you guys prop up the veterans for a whole month.
most people honor and respect veterans already. the same doesnt apply for pride
Adams take on Woll contract is sooooo bad. If the Leafs wait for Woll to prove his worth then the Leafs simply wont be able to sign in at all.
Signing your goalie early is a Treliving move. He did the same thing with Rittich and Vladar in Calgary.
goalies are goalies and they are voodoo. Its a risk. Especially a guy that gets injured every year.
Show us the true royal
Kyle Dubas and Brendan Shanahan really fucked this teams cap up when you do the math.
yeah. no team needs 4 11M$+ Forwards. It’s actively hurting the team
