Great reaction. Eluveitie (El-Vay-Tee, the "u" is silent) are a Swiss band (and one of my favourite bands). They play Celtic Folk Metal using whistles, fiddle, bagpipe, harp, mandola, bodhran and hurdy gurdy. Their style is a combination of melodic Death Metal and Celtic Folk. Their main theme is Celtic history and culture from the antiquity. The Celts lived all over Europe, not just Britain or Ireland. Celtic culture just survived longer there because the tribes lived on Islands and could not subdued by the Romans who almost eradicated all Celtic culture on the european continent. "Gauls" was the Roman name for all Celtic tribes that lived north of the Alps (especially France). Eluveitie mostly sing of the celtic tribe of the Helvetii who lived in the area of todays Switzerland, southern Germany and western Austria and was the first tribe that came under pressure when the Roman Empire started its expansion north and when the Gallic Wars (around 60-54 B.C.) started. The hurdy gurdy actually does not origin in Irish music but is much older and originated in Persia (I think).
You could check out the channel of Eluveities hurdy gurdist Michalina Malisz th-cam.com/video/QfP2qYlNBdw/w-d-xo.html . But PLEASE stay away from her playthroughs or her early Eluveitie covers that she had done before she was asked to join the band. There the full song is played in the background and Michalina plays the gurdy to it. But you could check her "5riffs" series where she plays 5 riffs from famous bands (like Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden) on the hurdy gurdy. She has done a great cover of "Martyr" by August burns Red too th-cam.com/video/Mvs39ZeQjq4/w-d-xo.html .
The band had a lot of line-up changes during the years, the most impactful in 2016, when the previous female vocalist/hurdy gurdist Anna Murphy and two other members left the band and founded a new band (Cellar Darling, check them out).
Some songs you could react to are: "Breathe", "Ambiramus", "King", "The Slumber", "Worship", "Deathwalker" (live from Wacken 2019), "Tegernako" (live at Summerbreeze 2008), "Thousandfold", "Call of the Mountains", "A Rose for Epona", or "Quoth the Raven" (video recorded in the studio). From their acoustic songs I would recommend "Omnos", "Brictom", "Lugus", "Caturix" or "Epona" (with Gaulish and English lyrics, at the end of this video there is a little explanation who Epona was). "Omnos" and "Brictom" are from "Evocation I:The Arcane dominion" while Lugus", "Caturix" and "Epona" are from "Evocation II: Pantheon". Both albums are more focussed on the Folk part of their style. On these two albums the songs are sung in Gaulish, the extinct (since 500 AD) language of the continental Celts that could be reconstructed by using inscripions found at archeological sites from all over Europe.
There is also an interview with Christian "Chrigel" Glanzmann (founder, male vocalist) and Fabienne Erni (female vocalist) which they did for the podcast of a vocal coach: th-cam.com/video/y14pAyoAiIM/w-d-xo.html . Fabienne and Guitarist Jonas Wolf also have a side project called "Illumishade" thats worth checking out.
wow. pin this comment!
@@paulknaus595 this dude does a copy/paste in every rebirth reaction video that doesn't pronounce the band name properly.
If you like folk, try The Hu. It's Mongolian folk metal-ish. Also you'll probably love Nightwish's folkier songs. They have a multi instrumentalist named Troy.
Tenggar Cavalry is insane as well.
^^^^ this! The Hu are phenomenal as are the other choices.
You should check out call of the mountains and a rose for Epona by Eluveitie as well.
He should do a reaction channel together with TankTheTech and Chase Carneson. You 3 would fit together so well.
Agreed!
Agree!
The flute is a "Low D" or "Low B flat" tin whistle (rarely a "Low C") This i'm pretty shure is Low D, roughly the same fingering, made out of turned aircraft aluminium with the lead singer playing a standard, although also made out of Al, "tin" whistle. The Hurdy Gurdy originated in France/Breton and is definitely not Irish :) Nice reaction. By the way ..... Band Maid are AWESOME :)
yes, in France, hurdy gurdy is call "vielle a roue".
I could literally see your brain exploding, what a great reaction!
6:43 "An Irish whistle!?!!?!?"
7:01 "A tambour!" (I think maybe it's a bodhrán but I might be wrong?)
7:17 "Dude's playing a lute!? He's playing a lute in a metal band!?"
I laughed my ass off at your reaction, it was great to see! Thank you for that. You're the first reactor to this song who knew what a hurdy-gurdy is, too. It might not be up your alley, but you should check out Wintersun, "Sons of Winter and Stars."
Its a bodrhan and a mandolin (as opposed to a lute, double stringed).
But yea, pretty damn funny.
Is'nt it a Bouzhouki (Not sure about letters, I'm french) a traditional instrument from Grece
@@titi9077 honestly every celtic origin country has this instrument in one form or another. They all look pretty visually similar.
You read my comment! Hahaha
Keep the reactions coming dude, you are doing a great job=)
Nice one Bruno
Definitely try Call of the mountains.
And then check out a band called Cellar Darling, where the lead singer from the call of the mountains ended up
You want to hear them without the male voice singing? Try Call of the Mountains, official Video. ☺
The multi-langage version :D
Dude your reactions through the song are gold. Could just see your brain combusting! 😂😂🤘🤘
Honestly it's the Charismatic Voice and yourself that are my go to's yo uboth really tap into the emotions of the songs. So good. Plus yo actually comment on it and discuss what you think! Excellent.
The female vocalist, Fabienne, has a side project called ILLUMISHADE. Their previous female vocalist has a band called Cellar Darling.
This band is amazing live! Seen them twice, once with an old lineup and once with this current lineup last year. I was supposed to see them again back in September but COVID ruined that. I got to meet the new Hurdy Gurdy player, Michalina Malisz, last year; she is super nice.
I am kind of partial to the previous lineup though. They had a drummer by the name of Merlin who was dismissed because of creative differences. Anna Murphy, vocalist/Hurdy Gurdy player, and Ivo, guitarist, are good friends with Merlin and weren't part of the decision to dismiss Merlin. So the two of them left the band as well. The three of them started a new band by the name of Cellar Darling. Different style of music but really good.
When Eluveitie went to replace them, they got a new drummer, Alain Ackermann, and a new guitarist, Jonas Wolf. Though when they replaced Anna Murphy they had to get two new members, a vocalist/Harp player Fabienne Erni, and a Hurdy Gurdy player, Michalina Malisz.
Don't get me wrong, the new lineup is amazing and Fabienne is an awesome singer, a much better vocalist than Anna, but a much different style. So, when she sings songs that Anna used to sing...it just doesn't sound right.
You should react to Call of the Mountains. Definitely a good one with the old lineup. 😁
A metal song with a flute and hurdy gurdy solo.... gotta love it!!! BTW, you've been hitting up all my favorite bands my dude!!!
Behold the metal of the herdy gurdy. I was introduced to this musical engineering marvel through this band
The Hu Mongolian folk metal. Yuve Yuve Yu, and Wolf Totem.
Great reaction. This is one of the best exports from switzerland since celtic frost.
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is folk metal, my friend. You and I are about the same age (I heard your Holy Diver reaction's intro, and we come from similar musical backgrounds - I even played drums for a few years and still have a doumbek, heh). When I first heard Eluveitie, I had a similar reaction to the one you display here.
I'm sure you're already getting other great suggestions. Eluveitie's back catalog prior to their lineup change is awesome, as is their newer stuff, and you are going to *love* them. The Hu and Tengger Cavalry are amazing Mongolian groups. If you want a semi-obscure band that is one of my favorites - check out Russia's Arkona. Their old song "Yarilo" is a short and sweet intro to their music (so nothing lost if it's not your thing). All I'll tell you there is that they use frame drums, accordions, and a balalaika in their metal songs! :P
Check out Wardruna and Heilung for Norse folk music (not really metal, but if I have you right, you'll love both), and Dzivia for more eastern European (Belarusian) folk.
I really love your channel, sir. Keep up the great times!
Bro you looked so emotionally awestruck though this entire track
Had to pause at 7:07.
My dude your reaction is PRICELESS.
You started listing off their instruments and just had that pause with your hands on your face and I was like "He gets it...he gets it!"
Welcome to Eluveitie brother.
And yes, that *is* a Hurdy-gurdy.
For anyone who has ever listened to Rebirth, I pray you listen to Eclipse.
For my life personally, I'm in an eclipse, and Rebirth is what I'm working towards.
If you like folk music, try The Hu Wolf Totem. They are from Mongolia.
If you’re a fan of the hurdy gurdy, you might want to do a search for ”nyckelharpa”, and check that out. It’s a slightly similar instrument popular in Swedish folk music and it has a very nice etheral sound
Hello from Scotland. Yeah, these guys are awesome. They can go full on hard (like this one) or go extremely soft and folky. Either way I love it and I'm sure you would too.....and I do think you'll get used to the harsher portions with time. Trust me. Do more. Call Of The Mountains is very catchy and no harsh vocal. Or Breathe.
Caught your Pisces yesterday and noticed you've reacted to all my favourites so far. Well done, great reactions.
Great reactions. Very knowledgeable. I enjoy these types of reactions since I learn a lot.
Try Wagakki Band - they Japanese rock/metal using traditional instruments/singing style. Homura+Akatsuki no Ito live is a great intro.
Check out Lovebites too. Japanese heavy metal band that does power/thrash/prog/ballads/hard rock. Their live stuff is always best, just don't do anything from Bloodstock as the sound mix is terrible.
You should check out a band called All That Remains. My favorite song is called "The Air That I Breathe"
Probably not much of a surprise, but this band is amazing live. Definitly one of my best live experiences ever when I saw them late last year. Didn't even know who they where when i got the tickets (they toured with a italian gothic metal band, Lacuna Coil that I wanted to see, and at first was a little dispointed that they where only the supporting act), but Eluveitie totally blew me away, and they have quickly become one of my favourites. This is one of the heavier songs they have, they have a mix of this and more traditional folk metal. You should try some of the songs where they sing in Gaulish (the celtic language that was spoken in mainland Europe), Epona or Lvgvs are good ones, you also need to listen to Call of the mountain if you want pure Folk Metal with their original female vocalist. And then you can go on to Cellar Darling with her and two other former band members from Eluveitie.
If you liked this, check out The Hu. (Wolftotem (either the original or the one feut Jacob Shaddix), Yuve Yuve Yu, Song of Woman (feut Izzy Hale)) and you want to dip your toe in some hilarious music, Alestorm. (Any Song really, they are also folk metal with a pirate theme) and In Extremo - Liam .. they also do folk and play homemade instruments that will make your mind explode
Man, if you like folk music CHECK THESE GUYS OUT! The real fucking deal! Ive seen them live and they are AMAZING!
If you want to go for Folk or Pagan Metal, i can recommend you a lot of bands, despite Eluveitie (spelled el-veiti) Germany has to offer some bands too.
Here this music is called mostly medieval Metal.
Prominent Bands would be:
Schandmaul, In Extremo, Subway to Sally, Saltatio Mortis, Cultus Ferox
, Feuerschwanz, Harpyie, Ignis Fatuu, Krayenzeit, Letzte Instanz, Morgenstern, Nachtgeschrei, Ougenweide, Rabenschrey, Ragnaröek, Schelmish, Tanzwut, Versengold ...
Unfortunately most of them sing in German, there are few songs in english or other languages...
For more Folk from Germany theres also Fiddlers Green, but they are more poppy, less Metal, but still awesome.
For Pagan Metal, the list is too long.
If you want my personal favorites (im german, so german songs, obviously) it would be:
Saltatio Mortis (latin for Dance of the death) - Wo sind die Clowns (where are the clowns, a song critiquing modern society, where money is everything and noone has time to actually live)
Subway to Sally - Seemannslied
In Extremo - Herr Mannelig
Feuerschwanz (Medieval Comedy Metal Band, but they have some real bangers too) - Schubsetanz (which, if you translate it means a moshpit (rough translation))
Schandmaul - Herren der Winde
So, if you want to expand your horizon a bit and are ok with Bands that dont sing in english, give em a shot ;)
Keep up the good work
Swiss Celtic 🤓😊
For more Celtic Folk Metal try Cruachan next.
But definitely also recommend Skyclad, Falkenbach, Primordial, Finntroll, Mithotyn, Thyrfing, Arkona, Korpiklaani, Tyr, Storm... Skyclad are one of the genre’s pioneers, but all very different bands and very cool
In terms of songs to recommend:
Skyclad - Vintage Whine; A Well Beside the River
Tyr - The Wings of Time; Sinclair’s Visa
Thyrfing - Urkraft; Sweoland Conqueror
Mithotyn - The Well of Mimir; In the Sign of the Ravens
Finntroll - Födosagan
Arkona - Slavsia Rus’; Yarilo
Falkenbach - When Gjallahorn Will Sound
Storm - Noregsgard; Villemann
Check out I Want My Tears Back live at Wacken by Nightwish if you like this type of music without the death metal side
I just found this song "Love the Way You Hate Me" from the band Like A Storm, you should check it out.
I think this ia the first time i've saw this man speechles
welcome to the world of folk metal. If you would like to take a trip in the folk metal scene from around the world here are a few suggestions:
Bloodywood - Ari Ari (India)
Nine Treasures - Wisdom Eyes (China)
Wagaki Band - anything all they're song titles are in Japanese signs (Japan ofc)
Tinariwen - Sastanàqqàm (Mali, it's more rock then metal)
Dalriada - Hajdutanc (Hungary)
Korpiklaani - Vodka (Finland)
there are a lot more but hey you have to start somewhere 😁😁😁
Nice☺if you want more
Eluveiti-Call of Mountains
Since we are here, need to check out Cellar Darling next. Look them up, no regrets.
The hurdy-gurdy player Michalina also has her own TH-cam channel where she also plays riffs from other metal bands, e.g. 5 Slipknot riffs th-cam.com/video/aT56G6H0ViM/w-d-xo.html
Michalina is the second hurdy-gurdy player. At the time of her predecessor Anna, she became an Eluveitie fan and played all the songs. When Anna left the band she was the perfect successor to Hurdy Gurdy. Anna was also the second singer at the time and was replaced by the one seen in the video.
I think "Eluveitie - A rose for Epona" would be s better match for you.
Check out their Havoc & King...!!
And the band's name is pronounced "El-Vay-Tee" .
Check out Call of the mountains, King or Rose for epona by Eluveitie. Devin townsend's - Kingdom live in EMGTV or Dimmu Borgir's Gateways live at (Forces Of The Northern Nights). Also Where Owls know my name by Rivers of Nihil is a great song too. These are songs you might enjoy listening to.
EL VAY TEE, Just in case no one else does the pronunciation. I didn't check. I'm lazy. My recommendation would be Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars. Bring snacks. It's a long one.
Hi just watching this one after seeing your nightwish reactions, if you love your folk instruments check out Troy's ones for Nightwish 😜 he plays alot! Xx
Here are some musically interesting performances:
Devon Townsend - Kingdom
Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine
Slipknot - The Nameless
Lamb of God - Overlord
Mushroomhead - We Are the Truth
The tempos, vocal styles, mood, etc all change throughout these, and they will take you in new directions.
Patty Gurdy.
Definitely check out “Call of the Mountains” official video! No growling there and you’ll enjoy the vibe
By the way, the hurdy gurdy isn't an irish instrument. It's from central europe. I'm not sure but I think it's originally from the medieval france.
OldSkuleNerd.exe has stopped working.
there is no .exe try oldskulenerd.com
You should react to epica, great band, i promis
More Eluveitie please
I think Eluveitie - Inis Mona or Thousandfold would be a good second or third song to hear by them
If you like folk influenced metal check out bloodywood from India. I suggest ari ari.
Thats a hurdy-gurdy btw
Check out michalina malisz 's youtube chanel, she is the Hurdy Gurdy player, she does eluveitie playthroughs and some cool covers ;)
Hey OSN, was about to recommend exactely this song for you after checking you out reacting to nightwish - Ghost Love Score. So, for Nightwish.. pick any song, you can't go wrong.. funny thing is, this also counts for Eluveitie.. you won't get the high click numbers with eluveitie, since they are not that appreciated by the mass.. it's a niche after all.. BUT for you, you can pick any song and you will love it. My personal recommendation for you is "Black Water Down" from the latest album.. thank me later.. :D check out their albums Evocation and Evocation II for a full spectre of their talent.. Pure volk, no metal ;-) extremely underrated group of talented musicians.. enjoy
Wheel fiddle is not the Irish only invention. Celtic tribes were living all over Europe. Further, slavic tribes have their own hurdy-gurdy, ukrainians, for instance, call it relya.
in Poland we call it lira korbowa
@@pawewolf6424 Yes, a lira (kolisna) also, because we call one who playing it lirnyk.
Check out Guilhelm Desq he did a cover of Pantera's cowboys from hell on hurdy gurdy
Also if you want to try out some folk metal. The Hu is great. Wolf Totem official video is a great starting point. And always turn on subtitles when watching their videos as they made sure their lyrics meanings are translated into english, they are Mongolian.
They have more "acoustic" sounding albums that you might enjoy even more if you find the fusion with intense metal a bit jarring. Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion and Evocation II: Pantheon
If you want more of their folk stuff listen to Epona
They use a Viola, if I remember right
Hey there. Only great reactions on your channel. Amazing. I love what you are doing here.
If you love clean acoustic instruments i would like to suggest to you to listen the song Samaltau by Dimash Kudaibergen. I think you will love that.
Also you can get introduced to the best singer in the world that way. Yes, i know i bring him up in almost every comment i leave on your channel, but i really want to see your take on him. Of course, Samaltau is not a song where Dimash exposes his vocal craft to the full potential, but is my fav song in the whole world. But you will love the instrumental. Search Samaltau by Dimash Kudaibergen at Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020.
You should react to Memento Mori by Lamb Of God!
Eluveitie is the folk metal band that sounds best without the metal. :)
Their name is pronounced EL-VAY-TEE
Eluveitie probably my favorite band. That being said, this might actually my least favorite song by them. Check out Inis Mona, Havoc, or if you want to hear more female vocals, A Rose For Epona (former vocalist) or Ambiramus (current vocalist).
@Brian Frederick yes, I was just focusing on songs they did music videos for. But there are plenty of better songs just on the same album. Deathwalker is a fantastic song. Slania and Quoth the Raven are two of the best. My all-time favorite is still Tegernako.
Ready for a Troygasm?
So your saying you can do without the metal part of the song? So only cleans. Got it, maybe metal is not for you
That is NOT what I said... I said I enjoy them individually or together... and yes I could listen to just the folk part without the metal... I can also listen to the metal part without the folk....
