  • Greetings folks.
    Time for another retro windows 98 PC build. Because that's what I do.
    Back in the day I never had the chance to mess with the Athlon XP from AMD. I was always an Intel guy, until I had to build a budget PC for my cousin.
    That being said, since we can´t find any new AMD or Nvidia hardware, that's exactly what we're going to build.
    Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

    The most cable management in the history of windows 98! Every PC looked like robot guts 😂

    I have similar HT2000 one, a little later, a nice platform that is gateway to all legacy stuff, tape drive, dvd, floppy, parallel ports, serial ports, etc.

    I have that same board... with the same sticker on it 😂 Mine came with a geode nx and it still has the sticker in 1 piece. That geode is really nice to underclock, turn off cache fully and play older dos games. Nice vid!

    I have the PCChips M811 in cherry red with a CPU cooler that is magenta in colour. For this mainboard I have now bought a Fractal Design Pop It Tower in magenta. Use an AGP to PCIe adapter to connect modern graphics cards to the AGP. What is still missing is a red or magenta colored GeForce graphics card and a bracket for vertical installation 😁 This is supposed to be a totally crazy retro PC with bright red and magenta colors. Mixed with technology from then and now 😉 XP is to be used as the operating system, so the graphics card must not be too new. But that's not bad, even an old GeForce 750 can't fully utilize the Athlon XP 2400+ processor. So ..... We don't want to overdo it.

    Nice build. It inspired me to revive my old AMD Athlon XP 2600+ mounted on a ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard . Maybe for a Win 98 machine.. who knows

    Honestly I think you are the only one I found that made a Athlon xp build. I often look what to do with Mine. In the end I used the parts that were replaced by better parts so stayed as a backup of my old windows xp build before I upgraded the os. So since I can't upgrade it's the remaining xp machine.

    5:10 Dual channel absolutely was a thing back in the Athlon XP era, probably not on that board though.

    I had a AMD Mobile Athlon XP-M 2200+ - AXMH2200FQQ3C back then!! no heat spreader since mobile version, worked fine in my atx mobo and I overclocked it to 2.4ghz, I had a 6600 GT and I had that computer for YEARS, it was good enough to play world of warcraft no issues when that was new.

    I remember i had an Athlon XP 2800+ (i think that's the number, not sure though) with a very red motherboard.
    I think it's the same you has now.
    Also i had a Rage 9200 SE on it

    I keep looking at the north & southbridge’s on that motherboard and to me it looks like a pc chips (sis) silicon integrated systems.
    Ahhh. What a plank I am! I just heard you say it is a pc chips.
    I had an m810lmr 7.1a, M848 (both socket A) and before those I had a horrible pc chips m741lmrt slot 1 board for 100mhz fsb Pentium 2’s & 3’s & 66mhz fsb celery’s

    There wasn’t a 1400+ mate, but AMD started making the thoroughbred a and b CPU’s at the 1500+ 10 x 133.34 - 1333MHz core speed.
    The CPU you put into the 848A board was a tbred a or b and not a palomino (tbred has thinner core)
    I know that pc chips used to bundle CPUs (integrated) with their (very cheap) motherboards.

    Oh yeah I remember using an Athlon XP back in the days with a PC-Chips mobo and SiS chipset. That was crap, later I ended up using an Abit mobo with VIA chipset, much better.
    Greetings from Brazil.

    • @DeckardGames
      @DeckardGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, SiS is a pain in stability

    • @benrogers84
      @benrogers84 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Deckard Games I found SiS chipset boards very good fir stability. Had the same mobo or very similar- 848ALU plus m810 7.1a plus ecs k7s5a all with SiS nb and sb and the pc chips m810 7.1a reached 280 days uotine when flashed to a hacked honey x bios and had a xp1600+ palomino athlon XP overclocked.
      SiS chips need right drivers installed as are very very picky. Once you've found optimal drivers for chipset and onboard peripherals they seemed very solid.

    Putting thermal paste on the smd capacitors around the cpu chip not too good idea, the paste is a little conductive and it's may cause some problems over time.

      Check out the video driver and monitor, also try on windowed mode using alt + enter.
      Or try rebooting to dos if fail

    • @DeckardGames
      @DeckardGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no dual channel in this 😁

  • @SeeJayPlayGames
    @SeeJayPlayGames 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    With your accent, when you say "PC Chips" it sounds like "PC Shit" to my ears... how appropriate. No dual channel? That being said I'm not sure how much dual channel actually benefits AthlonXP; I'd imagine it would matter a lot if you're using an nForce board with integrated video.
    I would have tried to get a (red) GeForce 4Ti instead of using a GeForce 4MX, but that's me... also, the front panel spaghetti should have been shoved under the red floppy cable... maybe even split-loomed or covered with red tape... was giving me cable management cringe.

    Garbage SIS chipset. SIS chipsets had the worst memory controllers and caused major performance bottleneck
