  • I begin to take the lower front cover off of my Detroit Diesel 12v71. The dampener proves to be very difficult, but persistence pays.

    Q-Ball my Hero. Good to see you back in the shop. I knew when it started to fight you I said hold on boys and girls. We may be in for a long one.( Now I know a lot of people read these comments and I just wanted to say after watching his shop videos from way back when it was just hot rods, this man has forgotten more about wrenching than most full time mechanics ever knew but he has found out that most viewers would rather see Orwell videos. I watch every video he puts out. As long as the money is in trucking Steve's going to be out there moving oversize and LTL freight up to the east coast and making Orwell videos for our entertainment. That's why I call him my Hero. I was OTR/OO for 45 years and I've been just about everywhere he goes and experienced plenty of the same situations and if your a trucker you know and if your not you should pay close attention. it gets hairy out there. Im sitting here in an old folks home now too ill to drive anymore and I wonder now how I did it for 45 years.) Sorry Steve didn't mean to be a distraction, I've just wanted to say that for awhile. Great video

    At the Detroit Diesel distributor we removed the crank damper by screwing another big bolt in the front of the crank, and then give it a good whack with a sledge hammer and it will just fall off; that's because the damper has a tapered cone that centers it on the crank. When you use a puller you're just making it tighter.

    • @GilmerJohn
      @GilmerJohn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, can't it be removed by putting in some long bolts into the "extra" threaded holes and pushing out the damper?

    Excellent learning video. I loved it. Detroit diesels look like smaller versions of their EMD cousins.

    You removed the woodruff key from the key way.
    The key way is a groove machined into a shaft.
    Love the shop work buddy! I hope the block is ok.
    There is a lot of guys doing Detroit restos now making it really expensive.

    It's like pulling a prop. Torque up the puller, then rap it on the end with a hammer.

    You said you were looking for a cabover truck to put that 12v in I belong to the antique truck club out of Kansas City there was a guy a year or so back I had two freightliners I think one was a regular cab and the other one was a double bunk he had one was a silver 92 in it and one was a V12 and he had parts a whole another V12 he didn't want a lot of money I think they were both for like 15 grand but it was American truck historical society out of Kansas City if he still has them don't hold me to that bring your cab over to Springfield Illinois and 22 weekend after memorial Day for the antique truck show Nationals love to have you got plenty of room

    You also forget that this engine more than likely has been sitting for 20+ years and your talking about 20 years of parts starting to fuse together saying WE ARE NOT COMING APART.

    That boat hardly look's like the one we had. We sold it year's ago and purchased a 50 foot pontoon house boat. And u can actually live in it. And it has solar panel's up top. And it keep's the battery's charged. It had window mounted AC unit. but i took it out. And installed a portable AC unit. And the vent goes out where the AC used to be. And it does good on electricity. I replaced the gas stove with an 2 burner electric stove. Cause the Gas Stove was messed up. So i just installed a 2 burner electric stove. And I replaced the 2 motor's it had with just one bigger motor which does the same speed has the 2 motor's that was on it. And the usage of the gas is less. Fun part this weekend is getting the pontoon on the trailer. Since it's to cold to have in the water. We use the Mariana Boat Dock and it's heavy security patrolled all the time.
