Feels like any movie Bob Richardson shoots starts with a hair/top light and shapes from there. Specifically Hateful Eight most characters were lit with hair lights.
It's been a few years since I've seen it but I suppose a lot of it was very wide shots, on a set - so building from a top light was probably a great way to keep lights out of the space also!
I’ve had a few friendly messages over time from teachers and professors mentioning that they’ve referenced my channel, or a video, which is awesome! Always appreciate the kind words, thank you Don!!
I appreciate that! Good amount of info in a shorter length video is something I’ve been focused on more for this series, so I’m super happy you think I’ve done that! Thank you - I hope you can continue to find my videos useful! :)
Thank you for all your support, kind words and feedback - what did Rob Ellis do to deserve all that?! Haha, I massively appreciate it - thank you so much!!! And I'm glad you enjoyed this one :)
Hey Rob, I’ve been watching and learning from your videos for about 2 years now. You are unbelievably gifted in cinematography and equally gifted in teaching it. Thank you so much for putting this content out here for us smaller creators! Also curious as to how you gained so much knowledge. Did you go to school for this?
Apologies for the slow reply Daniel - thank you so much! I'm happy you're getting so much out of these videos! No school, just an interest in photography and video which naturally turned into an interest for lighting! A lot of testing, failure to get the light looking the way I want it, research into why and repeat!
As always, GOATED VIDEO and GOATED teaching 🔥 hope you had some good holidays, this videos are never long enough for sure haha (ofc Patreon is there.) Keep it up Rob, truly one of the most accesible yet useful Cinematography Channels of TH-cam
Happy you’re continuing to enjoy my videos!! And I hope your holidays have been great also! Thank you so much, I hugely appreciate it, much more to come! :)
kicker is my fav! also, i've been looking for a "christopher nolan" look. He has a distinct look to his films(color, contrast and light) your vids are the closest i've found to mimic his style. I'd love to learn how you achieve it! camera, lenses, settings, color etc.
I believe he works with Hoyte van Hoytema a lot - but I have no idea what I'm doing similarly as I've never really looked too in depth at the cinematography in his films!
thanks for replying! do you have any color grading tutorials? I just started using dehancer and would love to see your workflow@@RobEllisCinematographer

So that’ll pair up well with my amaran 60x cob! Can’t wait to try out more stuff with a third light!
@@ezrarichardson279 lovely stuff!! I could watch little tests like that all day haha, it’s great to have a bunch of people helping out too. Hope the new light serves you well and I hope I can continue to help in some small way with these videos! :)
It's actually a bit of a Frankenstein contraption that was entirely pointless on my part - the bulb is in the Nanlite bulb AC adapter/magnetic mount - nanlite.co.uk/e27-magnetic-mount-and-ac-adapter-for-pavobulb-10c/ - which I stuck to a metal plate with a baby pin receiver, then an eye coupler with a baby pin on the boom into the receiver. But I could've just used the magnetic mount on the stand itself! 🥲
You would be planning your shots to account for this, so if you wanted to light like some of these examples you might set them up specifically for those important medium/close ups - or, you might not go too wide, or move around the room too much throughout the scene - or, you might sacrifice some precision and light from further away for more flexibility and space for the actors/angles. That would be a little easier on a higher budget as you may have a set to work with, but not impossible on a lower one!

All this is very good for close shots but... what about the general shot? The lighting would change completely from the general to the medium shot...
I wanna see cheap cameras with good lighting vs high end cameras with 💩 light.
We would need to define good light and bad light first!
🤌
I am huge Fan your work, But this time it wans't a tutorial but rather a product showcase.
What if you have no hair?😂
A head light! But depending on skin tone, you might not a "hair" light on a bald head anyway!
