    Congrats to Randy and the Unplugged team! REALLY liked the bump development work in the parking lot of the race track. SMART!
    It really punches out of the low speed corners and you could see the aero grip in the high speed corners. Could also see the effect of battery derating in the middle.
    Folks need to remember Model S is an incredibly good FAMILY SEDAN. Hopefully Tesla will make the New Roadster more focused on longer duration performance. It's useful that this race shows where improvement is needed in order to do that, such as battery cooling.
    The current production Teslas work fine for normal use on the road, including battery thermal management, and a race like this is an extreme environment not really encountered on the street.

      unless they build a new pack from the ground up along with a custom cooling solution, the heat will always be an issue. The battery was not designed with this kind of abuse in mind and it *heavily* relies on thermal mass to not instantly overheat.

    • @AllanSustainabilityFan
      @AllanSustainabilityFan ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It'll be fine for Nurbugring, that's about the ideal length, which is why even the Taycan doesn't overheat on it either.

    Back in 1990 I rode in an electric up the Peak from North Pole, at the start of the Pikes Peak road, back when there were still several miles of gravel road. Even though we had trailered the car to North Pole we barely made it to the top, with our 12 lead-acid golf-cart batteries providing the power of our aluminum-bodied custom electric car. We were rolling across the parking lot at the top of the mountain at a walking pace, even with the pedal to the medal. But on the way back down the mountain we gained so much energy from regeneration that we drove all the way down to Colo. Springs, then north on I-25 as far as the top of Monument Hill, (about 18 miles north of Colo. Spgs.) on our way back to Denver.

    Pack was cooked by 2:56. That's amazingly fast - on road courses our plaid gets 5-6 minutes! A sub-10 given this driving style is very impressive because for most of the run the car is at half power or less. We don't know the temps at the start, but a rough guess is UP could shave another 30 sec+ with more optimization of the application of power.

    • @abdulshabazz8597
      @abdulshabazz8597 ปีที่แล้ว

      TESLA
      It's amazing to watch the battery performance up until midway through the course when the plaid's racing performance drops to an ordinary race car.
      One way to enhance the battery cooling performance could be to 3D print each LFP layer of the 4680 cell or even the module they are grouped into. The idea is to group components closer together. Similar to the way microprocessors are fabricated at smaller and smaller fabrication nodes to increase the energy efficiency between the constantly switching gates. This should be the goal to overcoming pack energy loss. Not so much trying to cool an inefficient battery .
      Unplugged Performance could also introduce ultracapacitors into the battery cooling system. Storing up to maybe about 11 minutes of energy before requiring the battery to draw on.
      In theory, preloading electrical energy into ultracapacitors could reduce the thermal draw on the Tesla Model S Plaid LFP battery system. Ultracapacitors are able to charge and discharge very rapidly, making them effective for short-term, high-power applications.
      The primary function of an ultracapacitor in this context would be to act as a buffer. It would discharge energy quickly during high-power events like rapid acceleration or regenerative braking, and release that energy back into the battery system in a controlled manner to flatten the battery's power demand curve, while at the same time keeping its requirements lower. This could alleviate some of the strain on the batteries during high-power events, potentially reducing heat generation.

    it would be fun if Tesla kept putting effort into making the plaid an even better race car. I understand huge wing, splitter and diffuser are only 3rd party aftermarket by UP, because Tesla wants to keep a balance between track performance and everyday drivability and range. even with the track package you can daily drive with decent reduced range and just higher tire cost.
    But if Tesla took the track package to the next level with active front splitter, perfectly flat under body, active rear spoiler, and a diffuser, they could improve down force without sacrificing crusing efficiency. the cooling capacity could be increased too to ensure the car can do hard laps one after the other without going into lino mode. if they added truly active suspension with lower track position and flat cornering (think banned F1 active suspension or Bose active suspension) capable of improved track handling and better comfort in comfort mode, they could take the model S to the next level (supercar performance and rolls Royce level comfort)

      Tesla's job is to make a lot of EVs, including the new ones at $20k to $25k. It's not really a racing or exotic car company, though the New Roadster should be quite good. In other words, these are street cars, not race cars.

That'd be 1 minute faster than stock. GT3 cars with less aero and 600hp or so run that time, I think. Shorter lap, might help with staying on decent power a bit deeper into the run.

      So I'm curious how Dark Helmet will be 35 sec faster than Rimac Nevera. And only 25 seconds separates you from VW ID-R, while 2 minutes separates you from Pikes P!! Since Tesla has been fixing overheating in their premium car for over 2 years now with no success, my confidence in this car is kind of waning. Dark Helmet is the work of a private team, so I can't mix it up! Your hopes have risen slightly, but I'm not sure the Nürburgring will be in Randy's interest. Porsche is already testing an EV supersport whose focus is to offer an EV that is fast and furious at the Nürburgring, but still able to be used normally on the road. And everyone should take advantage of that time until 2027, because everyone, regardless of the brand of their fan club, who knows the history of Porsche, guesses that after that it will be quiet again at the Nürburgring for a while. I just hope that it won't be like in the category of racing cars, where there was peace for a few decades. Considering that Elon probably won't like it, I believe that, on the contrary, entertainment will be provided.
